Damen Stan Pontoons to Support London’s ‘Super Sewer’ Construction
The Ferrovial Agroman Laing O'Rourke joint venture (FLO) has taken delivery of two Damen Stan Pontoons. FLO will deploy the vessels – a SPo 7120 and a SPo 4113 – for marine infrastructure construction duties on the Thames Tideway Tunnel project in London. The joint venture company has also chartered a smaller SPo 3011 for a period of one year. Considered to be one of the most important civil engineering projects currently under construction, the Thames Tideway Tunnel represents the modernization of London’s subterranean sewage system.
Can Company Strategies Enhance Competence?
Capt Pradeep Chawla, Managing Director QHSE & Training, Anglo-Eastern Ship Management Ltd., delivered a theme address at the World Maritime Day symposium on "Shipping's future needs people: Is global maritime education and training on course?". Following is the Edited Abstract of his paper which discusses the strategies and efforts of a Ship Management company, to enhance competence of the seafarers through a comprehensive company training program. Competence is generally defined as ‘the ability to do something successfully or efficiently’. It is generally accepted that both knowledge and skill are required to be competent. IMO is the guardian of the maritime industry and has tirelessly worked since 1978 to bring about one common standard of training of the seafarers worldwide.
IMO Reoccupying its Headquarters
IMO will be fully operational, once again, from its Headquarters on 's Albert Embankment, following a 20-month period in temporary accommodation while the Headquarters building underwent major refurbishment. The first major meeting to be held in the refurbished Headquarters will be the 84th session of the Maritime Safety Committee (7 to 16 May) and the building will be formally re-opened in a special ceremony in mid-June to coincide with the 100th session of the IMO Council.
