South Carolina Ports Authority celebrated the dedication of a new headquarters building at the Wando Welch Terminal with its Board of Directors, local leaders, business partners and employees.The Ports Authority, which owns and operates public seaport facilities in Charleston and Georgetown, as well as Inland Ports in Greer, South Carolina and Dillon, South Carolina, said in a press note that the 80,000-square-foot building consolidates approximately 160 employees working from multiple office locations in the Charleston area.Accoding to the press release, the building design features a glass atrium in the lobby extending up all four floors and a terrazzo floor pattern depicting the Charleston Peninsula and waterways.

The South Carolina Ports Authority (SCPA), which operates the Port of Charleston and other facilities, today reported 6.4 percent year-over-year container volume growth, with a record 2.3 million twenty-foot equivalent container units (TEUs) handled in 2018.Last year marked the third consecutive calendar year of record TEU volume for SCPA. The Port moved 199,701 TEUs in December alone, a 9.2 percent increase over December 2017 and the strongest December in SCPA history.As measured by the total number of boxes handled, SCPA moved 114,018 pier containers in December and a record 1.3 million pier containers in 2018.“We are pleased to report our strongest December in history and record-breaking growth of our container business in calendar year 2018,” said SCPA president and CEO Jim Newsome.

Every year, more than 800 landmark buildings in London throw their doors open to the general public in a scheme called Open House London. The scheme enables the public to witness at first hand buildings of architectural, cultural or other significance that are normally off-limits to them. World Maritime Day (28 September) has been marked around the world in a series of events and celebrations led by International Maritime Organization (IMO) from its London headquarters. Seafaring nations, coastal states and the shipping industry staged conferences, seminars and public events under the 2017 theme “Connecting Ships, Ports and People”. At IMO, the traditional diplomatic reception was preceded by a special visit for maritime students and young professionals from the maritime industries. After a tour of the headquarters building they received presentations on some of the key topics IMO is dealing with, including safety, security and humanitarian issues.

Caterpillar Inc. announced today it will locate a limited group of senior executives and support functions in the Chicago area later this year and reaffirmed the ongoing importance of its presence in Peoria and Central Illinois. “Caterpillar’s Board of Directors has been discussing the benefits of a more accessible, strategic location for some time,” said Caterpillar CEO Jim Umpleby. “Since 2012, about two-thirds of Caterpillar’s sales and revenues have come from outside the United States. “We value our deep roots in Central Illinois, and Peoria will continue to be our hometown. The vast majority of our people will remain in this important region where we have many essential facilities and functions,” added Umpleby.

South Korean shipbuilder Daewoo Shipbuilding and Marine Engineering (DSME) has  revealed an additional self-restructuring plan amid the falling shipbuilding orders. The company’s creditors, led by the state-run Korea Development Bank, will now decide on the new self-rescue plan which proposes a further cut in DSME’s workforce and wages, as well as temporary closure of docks, the Korea Herald reports citing industry sources. The company plans to separate its lucrative defense business, including special vessel, put it in its subsidiary and list it. DSME also denied rumors on the sale of their naval business, however the company said that they are reviewing it. The company will slash its workforce and wages.

NYK welcomed about 60 environmental supervisors from 47 NYK Group companies to the group’s annual Environmental Management Conference in Tokyo. NYK holds this conference with NYK Group companies to share information on environmental practices and strengthen environmental management within the group. It was a day no one who worked on the Washington Navy Yard will ever forget. Shortly after 8 a.m., on Sept. 16, 2013, Navy contractor Aaron Alexis entered the Naval Sea Systems Command (NAVSEA) headquarters building and killed 12 people while wounding four more - including two police officers. A year later, though much of the NAVSEA workforce is still displaced and many struggle to make sense of the tragic events, Washington Navy Yard employees met to remember the lives of coworkers, friends and loved ones during a short, 8 a.m. ceremony on the base.

Holland America Line revealed the name of its new 99,500-ton cruise ship slated for delivery in February 2016 will be ms Koningsdam. While the name pays homage to the company’s rich heritage and deep roots in the Netherlands, it also reflects a new era with a bold name that is an original in Holland America Line’s 141-year history. Fincantieri’s Marghera shipyard. Since 1883 every Holland America passenger vessel has borne the “dam” suffix, and ms Koningsdam carries on that tradition. The word koning means “king” in Dutch, and the name celebrates the majestic new ship. The name also pays honor to His Majesty King Willem-Alexander, the first king of the Netherlands in over a century. Holland America Line has a long, proud history with the Netherlands.

Adm. Paul F. Zukunft assumed command as the 25th commandant of the Coast Guard today, relieving Adm. Bob Papp during a military ceremony at the Douglas A. Munro Coast Guard Headquarters Building. “Adm. Papp’s leadership and resolve have left an indelible mark on the service,” said Zukunft. “To the men and women of the Coast Guard, I'm humbled to stand before you as your 25th Commandant," said Zukunft. Adm. Zukunft reports to Coast Guard Headquarters from Alameda, Calif., where he served as the Coast Guard Pacific Area Commander since 2012.

Emergency personnel remain on scene and a "shelter in place" order has been issued for Navy Yard personnel. The Naval Sea Systems Command's headquarters is the work place for about 3,000 people.

Naval Sea Systems Command (NAVSEA) is the largest of the Navy's five system commands.

VRP Service Disruptions September 2 and 5-9, 2013. The VRP program will be transitioning to the new Coast Guard Headquarters building September 5th  through September 9th, 2013. As a result, there will be a disruption to VRP service during this time. Staff will not have access to computers or phones. Additionally, September 2nd is a federal holiday, limiting VRP staff availability to September 3rd and 4th that week. 1846-USRC McLane ran aground while attempting to cross the bar of the River Alvarado during the Mexican War. 2001- On October 15, 2001, President George W. Bush announced that a letter sent to Senate Majority Leader Tom Daschle had anthrax in it. This followed a number of other anthrax attacks in Florida and New York. The EPA requested Coast Guard assistance. Members of the Atlantic Strike Team deployed to Washington, D.C., while Gulf Strike Team members were deployed to Florida. Strike team members conducted entries into the affected areas, collected samples, and assisted in the cleanup of those areas. The AST members in Washington coordinated entries into the U.S. Capitol, Hart Senate Building, the U.S. Supreme Court, and the Government Printing Office, among others.

The Shipyard Expansion Project is a 4-PHASE project. PHASES I through III have now been completed with the installation of the Travelift at a total cost to date of US$11.345-million. Great Lakes Shipyard, a division of The Great Lakes Towing Company, operates a full-service shipyard with a 770-ton Travelift and a drydock in Cleveland which specializes in all types of marine construction and repairs for vessels, tugs, supply boats, ferries, barges, excursion vessels, dinner boats, research vessels, large yachts, and off-site topside work of every kind.

Secretary of Homeland Security Janet Napolitano and General Services Administration (GSA) Administrator Dan Tangherlini has officially opened the U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS) Consolidated Headquarters campus with a ceremonial ribbon cutting at the newly built U.S. Coast Guard Headquarters building. The opening of the new facility marks the completion of the first phase of the consolidation project on St. Elizabeths west campus. “Today, we take a major step forward in making our ‘One DHS’ vision a reality,” said Secretary Napolitano. “We are proud to provide the U.S. Coast Guard with a facility that will support the important work they do for the American people,” said GSA Administrator Dan Tangherlini.

At a ceremony in Busan, Korea on 12 March, the chairman and CEO of the Korean Register – an IACS member classification society – together with over 300 VIP guests, formally broke the ground to start construction of KR’s new head office. As part of its continuing international development plans, the Korean Register is expanding its core headquarters staff and has outgrown its current headquarters in Daejeon, central Korea. The new headquarters will be a 20 storey state-of-the-art building on a 7.5 acre site in Busan with the capacity to house 1000 staff.
