Yang Ming Implements ECO Insight

September 7, 2017

The Taiwanese carrier Yang Ming Marine Transport Corp. will roll out DNV GL’s performance management solution ECO Insight.

Yang Ming operates a fleet of 98 vessels, representing six million DWT and an operating capacity of 590,000 TEU, the majority of which are container vessels. Yang Ming will use ECO Insight performance management onshore, with Navigator Insight voyage reporting onboard for their vessels.

“We are always active in finding solutions that can save energy and improve our fleet’s performance. After working closely with the team we’ve seen that ECO Insight is a comprehensive and professional solution for fleet performance management,” says James Jeng, Marine Department, Vice President, Yang Ming Marine Transport Corp. “It is also a good opportunity for us to get ready for EU MRV and upcoming IMO DCS reporting, as the solution will reduce our crew’s reporting workload considerably, while providing our superintendents a platform that is better structured and more convenient.”

Yang Ming will also sign up to the new fleet performance center service that comes together with ECO Insight. It supports ECO Insight customers worldwide in monitoring and optimizing their fleets. Expert systems at the fleet performance centers can check incoming vessel data from customers using the ECO Insight platform, providing quality control of the data and offering suggestions on potential improvement levers for both individual vessels and fleets.

Dedicated DNV GL performance managers will verify the validity of performance alerts before they are being send to customers. They also look at why performance is different between vessels of the same fleet and propose actions.

“We have undertaken a lot of testing together with Yang Ming to make sure that they are happy with the implementation of the ECO Insight solution, ensuring that it integrates the different solutions they are using, and demonstrating how they can improve fleet performance and reduce reporting workload on their crews,” says Ivan Tam, DNV GL Business Development Leader. “The results convinced the performance team from Yang Ming and we are very much looking forward to working with them as they carry on using the system."

Yang Ming will also be using ECO Insight to manage their EU MRV reporting. The European Union MRV schemes requires that shipping companies report CO2 emissions based on fuel consumption on all voyages to, between, and from EU ports, while incoming IMO regulations will impose similar requirements for all vessels bigger than 5.000 GT globally in the near future.

ECO Insight provides the necessary functions to collect, manage and report the required data efficiently, while improving fuel consumption at the same time.
