Sri Lanka Tows Burning Supertanker off Coast. One Crewman Presumed Dead

Sri Lanka began towing a fully loaded supertanker on fire off its east coast after it began drifting towards land, a spokesman for the navy of the Indian Ocean nation said on Friday.The fire was still raging on the New Diamond tanker carrying about 2 million barrels of oil, said the spokesman, Captain Indika de Silva. There were 23 crew on board, one of whom is presumed dead, while the rest have been rescued from the ship.There were no signs of an oil leak from the vessel, he added.

Indian Coastguard officials insist captain must be on board despite court detention order Despite being refused bail by the Madras (India) High Court, captain of MV Prabhu Daya, the ship suspected to have collided with a fishing boat off Kerala coast, killing five fishermen, could not be arrested after the Chennai port and Coast Guard authorities raised objections. Moments after the high court rejected the [bail] petition a team of Kerala police officers took him into custody. A team member said they could not take him to the shore as the port trust and the Coast Guard officiaals raised objections, saying a vessel could not be allowed to remain without a captain. The five-member team had to send Pereira back to the vessel.

REPORT: Bangladesh Ship Seized by Pirates

A Bangladeshi-flagged ship is believed to have been seized by pirates off southern India, according to a recent BBC report.According to a report on www.bbc.co.uk, the MV Jahan Moni was attacked after a long pursuit near the Lakshadweep group of islands, some 300km (185 miles) from the Indian coast. The ship, with 25 Bangladeshi crew on board, was on its way from Singapore to Europe via the Suez Canal. The Bangladesh Shipping Department reportedly sought help from the Indian coastguard and from anti-piracy teams in Dubai and Singapore. (Source: BBC)

Indian Coastguard Rescues Vessel Crew

The Indian Coastguard rescued and evacuated 25 crewmembers of a Panama merchant vessel near Porbandar. The crewmembers of M.V. Christena-II that had run aground off the Porbandar coast were evacuated on July 28, according to Indo-Asian News Service. The 492 ft.-vessel was laden with 180 tons of marine gas oil and 40 tons of high-speed diesel. It ran aground after main engine failure following rough weather in the Gujarat coast. The Maritime Rescue Coordination Center, Mumbai, and the Maritime Rescue Sub Center, Porbandar, picked up distress signals from the Panamanian vessel. The Porbandar authorities were alerted and a coastguard team brought the crewmembers to the shore. The crew was then handed over to the police for further investigation.
