USCG's First Polar Security Cutter to be Named Polar Sentinel

The first ship in the U.S. Coast Guard's Polar Security Cutter program will be named Polar Sentinel, Commandant Admiral Karl Schultz revealed in his 2022 State of the Coast Guard Address, delivered Thursday in Clearwater, Fla.The Polar Security Cutter program is planned to replace the Coast Guard's aging fleet of icebreakers, including the 46-year old heavy icebreaker USCGC Polar Star and 23-year-old medium icebreaker USCGC Healy.Pascagoula, Miss. shipbuilder Halter Marine has been awarded contracts to build the first two Polar Security Cutters, and the U.S.

Halter Marine Awarded Contract for Second USCG Polar Security Cutter

Pascagoula, Miss. shipbuilder Halter Marine has been awarded a contract to build a second U.S. Coast Guard Polar Security Cutter, the Pentagon announced Wednesday.The $552.7 million detail design and construction contract follows a $745.9 million contract awarded in 2019 to build the first PSC. There is also an option for a third PSC.The Polar Security Cutter program is planned to replace the Coast Guard's existing fleet of icebreakers. USCG Polar Security Cutter Details Unveiled

Designing the New National Security Multi-Mission Vessel

For more than 100 years the U.S. has depended on State Maritime Academies (SMA) to produce USCG licensed merchant officers. The SMA’s have also been an important source of U.S. Navy and U.S. Coast Guard officers, as well as trained personnel for the maritime industry and electric power industries ashore. Key to training these future deck officers and engineers has been the annual sea cruise on dedicated training vessels. The current SMA training ships, all of which were built for other purposes and later converted to be training ships, are getting old.

BV Approves Braemar’s LNG Containment System

Braemar Technical Services announced that Bureau Veritas (BV) has issued a General Design Approval for the FSP Type B LNG Containment System (FSP). Starting with the General Dynamics NASSCO-patented tank design, for which the American Bureau of Shipping (ABS) and Lloyd’s Register had issued Approval in Principle (AiP) several years prior, Braemar engineered a new and improved containment system that meets the demands of LNG storage in marine, offshore and onshore applications.

Nichols Brothers to Build Cruise Vessels

Nichols Brothers Boat Builders (Nichols Boats), located in Freeland, Washington, recently signed an agreement with Lindblad Expeditions Holdings, Inc. to build two new 100 guest ships. The first vessel is scheduled for delivery in the second quarter of 2017, and the second vessel will be completed in the second quarter of 2018. These new vessels will provide the Lindblad Expeditions' guests with comfortable accommodations, flexible dining options and advanced technical equipment for presentations and discussions. The new vessels will also have storage for a fleet of sea kayaks, paddle boards, and specially designed landing craft - all of which are geared to get guests out and into the wild, remote places being explored.

Braemar Sub-Licenses FSP Containment System

Braemar LNG BV, the wholly owned subsidiary of Braemar Shipping Services PLC, has issued a sub-license to FSP LNG BV for the design and construction of a new Flat-panel, Semi-membrane, Prismatic-shaped (FSP) containment system, under the terms of the license it holds with General Dynamics NASSCO to utilize its patents in the design and construction of FSP LNG containment systems. FSP technology has been developed for marine LNG transport and can also be used in a range of applications, including Floating Liquefaction (FLNG), Floating Storage Units (FSU), Floating Storage Regasification Units (FSRU) and LNG marine fuel tanks. The FSP system - a new Type B, LNG containment system - uses flat plate technology to overcome the issues associated with partial filling and sloshing.

American Phoenix

BAE Systems joined with Mid Ocean Tanker Company (MOTC), Mid Ocean Marine and Alterna Captial Partners earlier this year to commission the American Phoenix, a U.S. Flag/Jones Act-qualified product-chemical tanker. Measuring 616 x 105 ft. with a laden draft of 36 ft. and a cargo capacity of 49,000 dwt, American Phoenix is the largest vessel ever built and launched in the State of Alabama. BAE Systems was contracted to complete construction of the American Phoenix and prepare it for use. The vessel is owned by MOTC, a joint venture between Mid Ocean Marine and private equity firm Alterna Capital Partners. The vessel will conduct trade initially in the Gulf of Mexico.

Jamestown Metal Marine to Construct Casino Vessel

Jamestown Metal Marine Sales, Inc. has been awarded a contract by Blue Chip Casino, LLC, a subsidiary of Boyd Gaming, to construct a new casino vessel at Blue Chip's Michigan City, Indiana facility. The new vessel, which will replace the present vessel, will be approximately 400 ft. in length with a beam of 200 feet and provide about 75,000 square feet of gaming area on a single deck. In addition to the gaming area there will be another 85,000 square feet of back of house and future gaming areas on other decks. Jamestown was selected by Blue Chip Casino for this high visibility project based on Jamestown's significant experience outfitting casino vessels and managing other turnkey marine construction projects. This will be Jamestown's 26th casino project.
