Houston-based Kirby Corporation said it has signed a definitive agreement to acquire Savage Inland Marine's towboat and tank barge fleet for approximately $278 million in cash and the assumption of leases.Kirby will acquire Savage's inland fleet consisting of 46 towboats and 90 tank barges with approximately 2.5 million barrels of capacity, primarily used for transporting petrochemicals, refined products and crude oil on the Mississippi River, its tributaries and the Gulf Intracoastal Waterway.

New Towboat Delivered to Lorris G. Towing
M/V Cole Guidry, the newly designed Bollinger inland towboat, was delivered to owner Lorris G. Towing on December 16, 2016. The M/V Cole Guidry, designed and built by Bollinger Shipyards, is a 2,000 HP inland towboat measuring 80 feet by 36 feet with a 10-foot draft. The vessel is powered by three Caterpillar C18 Tier 3 engines rated at 670 HP each, supplied by Louisiana Machinery. The reduction gears are Twin Disc Model MGX517ODC with a ratio of 6:1. Electrical power is provided by three Kohler generators, 65 kW each, supplied by Caroline Marine.

The ‘Greening’ of America’s Marine Highways
Ingram Barge Company sees two kinds of green in their newest venture on the inland rivers. In late March, the Paducah-McCracken County Riverport Authority and Ingram Barge Company announced plans to assess the viability of Intermodal River Transportation, utilizing the largest flat-top crane in North America and Ingram’s towboats and barges. On March 27th, that plan came to life as the Paducah Riverport Authority’s 200-ton crane lifted 54 empty containers and stacked them neatly on an Ingram-owned barge. An Ingram towboat then transported the container laden barge to the port of St. Louis and then back to Paducah for unloading. The highly successful trial run tested the logistics of moving the intermodal containers via barge in the nation’s heartland.
