Port of Hueneme Celebrates Record FY 2013
The Port of Hueneme, on the US West Coast, says it realizes another strong year in FY2013 achieving a record revenue total of approximately $13.4 million in Gross Operating Revenue for a 10.4% increase over FY 2012. The Port’s CEO, Kristin Decas and CFO, Andrew Palomares submitted the auditor’s report to the Port’s Board of Harbor Commissioners at its recent Commission Meeting. Houston Ship Channel Closed By Beef Fat Spill
According to a report from Dow Jones Newswires, the northern end of the Houston Ship Channel was closed Jan. 4 after some 15,000 gallons of beef fat spilled into the waterway from a ruptured storage tank. In all, about 250,000 gallons of beef tallow spilled from a land-based tank owned by privately held agricultural product firm Jacob Stern and Sons Inc. A new report, released by Lloyd’s Register - Fairplay Research, predicts that the world’s dry bulk carrier fleet will continue to show strong growth over the next five years, spurred largely by surging demand for iron ore and metallurgical coal to feed China’s undiminished appetite for steel production. The monthly Shipbuilding Market Forecast for September examines the dry bulk and general cargo ship sectors. It provides a review of the global business environment demand for seagoing transport, market conditions and capacity utilization for these classes of vessels, and gives a detailed five-year shipbuilding forecast, including new orders, deliveries and demolitions.
Innovation Key for Pacific Northwest Exporters
The Pacific Northwest region of the United States – home to major Puget Sound container ports in Tacoma and Seattle – is expanding its worldwide exports. According to the Washington Council on International Trade (WCIT), one-third of the Washington state's economic activity, one-third of its agricultural product and one in three jobs depends on international trade. And on a per capita basis, Washington is now the most trade-dependent state in the United States. "When you take our total two-way trade volume – more than $110 billion annually – and divide by our population of roughly 6.3 million Washingtonians, you get an annual two-way trade volume of more than $17,000 per person," WCIT President Bill Center said in a recent speech to the National Lieutenant Governors' Association.
