Guice Offshore Adds Three Vessels to Its Fleet

Louisiana-based offshore support vessel owner Guice Offshore (GO) has expanded its fleet with three new vessels, including another 170 ft. DP1 multi-purpose vessel and two 205 ft. DP2 platform support vessels.The vessels will operate as GO Explorer (170 ft. DP1 MPSV), GO Crusader (205 ft. DP2 PSV), and GO Adventurer (205 ft. DP2 MPSV). Pirates Loot Thai Tankship Cargo: Crew Safe

A Thai oil tanker reported missing two days ago has been recovered with all of its crew members safe but pirates who hijacked the tanker took its cargo and damaged communications gear, the International Maritime Bureau (IMB) said on Monday. The MT Orapin 4 lost contact with authorities after departing for Indonesia from a terminal in Singapore on Friday, prompting the IMB to send an alert shortly after. The tanker arrived in Thailand's Sri Racha port on Sunday evening and Thai authorities will be investigating the incident, Noel Choong, the head of IMB's Kuala Lumpur-based Piracy Reporting Center, told Reuters. USCG Urges Caution along California Coast

The Coast Guard is warning boaters to exercise extreme caution while operating along the northern California Coast from Thursday through Friday evening as the National Weather Service has issued a high surf advisory extending from south of Sonoma County into Monterey County. It is forecasted that large swells up to the 20-foot range will create strong rip currents at most beaches, moderate to large surf at reefs and sand bars and potential sneaker waves at steeper beaches. “Boaters and beach-goers should remain vigilant, prepare for the unexpected and have proper survival and communications gear at the ready if disaster strikes,” said Capt. Greg Stump, commander of Coast Guard Sector San Francisco.

Megayacht's Carbon Fiber Arch Delivery

GMT Composites recently shipped a twelve-legged carbon fiber antenna and instrument arch to Holland Jachtbouw (Zaandam, The Netherlands). This has just been installed on an in-build 140-ft aluminum superyacht, due for launching later this year. Langan Design Associates (Newport, R.I. - USA) turned to GMT for building this structure in carbon composite to reduce the weight of the arch that carries Cassiopeia's wide array of antennae, navigation and communications gear. The use of carbon fiber saved over 1,300 lbs.

High-Speed Ferries Ready for Haiti

High-speed ferry ships MV Huakai and MV Alakai are preparing to sail to Haiti in support of Operation Unified Response to provide disaster relief following the Jan. 12 earthquake there. Huakai and Alakai were originally built to serve as passenger and vehicle ferries in Hawaii but were turned over to the Maritime Administration's custody when the ferry service went bankrupt. The ships will be under operational control of the Military Sealift Command during Operation Unified Response. The ships' main tasks will be to transfer equipment and personnel in the region. They are configured for the mission to each hold 450 tons of cargo and 500 passengers and can travel at a sustained speed of 33 knots. On Wednesday, Jan.

Seabees to Receive New Convoy Simulator

By Daryl C. NORFOLK (NNS) -- The Naval Construction Force will soon have a new, 21st century convoy training simulator to augment current training for Seabees. Lockheed Martin was recently awarded a contract that includes a state-of-the-art $5 million combat convoy simulator (CCS) expected to be delivered to Construction Battalion Center (CBC), Gulfport, Miss., in September 2008. The trainer is part of a $52.5 million contract providing convoy simulators to the Marine Corps. The system consists of six vehicle simulators, four high-mobility multipurpose wheeled vehicles and two medium tactical vehicle replacements, that will be programmed with a variety of training scenarios and scenery projected onto a 360-degree screen.

Geo Shipyard Delivers Party Fishing Boat

A party fishing boat is not your usual passenger vessel. It is a vessel outfitted for people to whom fishing is more sport than recreation and catching the "big" ones represent a mental and physical challenge. To accommodate these sportsmen takes a special boat with accommodations for anglers who may spend one-two nights on the vessel. Geo Shipyard, New Iberia, La. just delivered a 68-ft. by 27-ft. catamaran party fishing boat with facilities for 83 fishermen on day trips and 40 on overnight voyages. Williams Party Boats, Inc of Galveston, Texas is owner of the vessel. In business since 1946, the company is operated by third generation owner Capt. Johnny Williams. The vessel is named Capt. John for Williams' father. One of the major features of the vessel is its 25-knot speed.

The most recent application of Image Marine’s expertise in producing custom vessels for comfort and recreation afloat is a 72-ft. (22 m) aluminium catamaran destined for the waters of South East Asia. While live-aboard dive boats and dinner cruisers continue to generate widespread acclaim for Image’s tourism vessels among commercial operators, this latest completion has been built and outfitted to meet the needs of a private owner. However, rugged use may call for extensive repair of a vessel to keep it sailing. Most repair work done in shipyards is for five-year regulatory inspections to meet Coast Guard requirements. Often shafts and props are repaired during this inspection, as are sea chests and rudders.
