Norwegian shipbuilder Ulstein Verft on Saturday launched the new Olympic construction service operation vessel (CSOV), Olympic Boreas.The newbuild is first of two sister vessels for Olympic, designed to assist in offshore energy construction projects and service assignments.The launch saw the vessel towed out the dock hall and moored quayside for outfitting work."The general outfitting work, which consists of accommodation work, electrical installations, piping and mechanical installations, to name a few, is well underway.

Two commissioning service operation vessels (CSOV) under construction for Germany-based Bernhard Schulte Offshore have reached milestones. The steel cutting and keel laying ceremonies for yno 321 and 320, respectively, were arranged at the Crist hull yard, Poland, on January 30, 2024.The two Ulstein-designed CSOVs are characterized by the TWIN X-STERN feature, implementing fore and aft main propeller units for excellent dynamic positioning characteristics.The hulls will be prepared at Crist before being towed to Ulstein Verft in Norway for the final phases…

The first of two methanol-ready newbuild Construction Service Operation Vessels (CSOVs) for the Norwegian shipowner Olympic has arrived at the outfitting yard of Ulstein Verft in Norway.The contract between Olympic and Ulstein was signed in 2022 and includes the construction of two CSOVs for offshore wind at Ulstein Verft.The vessels are based on the ULSTEIN SX222 design, and have a length of 89.6 meters with a beam of 19.2 meters. The CSOVs are able to accommodate 126 people in 91 cabins.

The U.S. Department of Transportation’s Maritime Administration (MARAD) on Monday awarded $19.6 million in grants aiming to help 31 shipyards modernize, increase productivity, and expand local employment opportunities while competing in the global marketplace.The grants were awarded to shipbuilding and repair yards in 15 states throughout the U.S. as part of MARAD's Small Shipyard Grant Program. Since 2008, the program has awarded $262.5 million to nearly 300 shipyards in 32 states and territories.

In 2019 Finnish shipping company Eckerö coated the open cargo deck of their roro passenger ferry Finbo Cargo with Ecospeed. This was done to protect the deck against damage from cars and cargo. One year later the deck was still in excellent condition, in strong contrast to previous years. As a result, Eckerö decided to coat the ice belt and most of the hull with Ecospeed to offer it the same lasting protection.“We coated the weather deck with good result,” said Daniel Olsén, Technical Manager with Eckerö Group.

All the grand blocks for the Cable Laying Vessel (CLV) ‘Nexans Aurora’ have now been assembled at the hull yard, CRIST, Norway's Ulstein has informed. "Work tasks such as some steelwork, outfitting, and paintwork now need to be carried out before the hull can be towed to Ulstein Verft, Norway, for finalizing," Ulstein said Tuesday.Nexans Aurora is a DP3 cable laying vessel that will be outfitted for power cable laying, including bundle laying, jointing and repair, and cable system protection and trenching.The contract between Nexans and Ulstein Verft was announced in July 2018.

Van den Herik dredger Charlock recently paid a visit to the Royal Niestern Sander shipyard in the Netherlands for various maintenance work executed at the dock location.Among maintenance work, a store crane had been positioned on the fore ship. Also a bulkhead fitted with Hardox wear plates, pins of the suction tube arm were replaced, six new water tight doors have been installed and paintwork on deck has been executed.

Norwegian shipbuilder and ship designer Ulstein is currently carrying out the paint work on Bernhard Schulte’s new service operation vessel (SOV), the 'Windea TBN'.The SOV, which was launched on 15 October 2016, for the offshore wind industry was docked into our dock hall on 8 December 2019.The hull of the vessel arrived Ulstein Verft in September 2019 and in the last few months the work has been focused on accommodation, electrical installations, painting of technical areas and outfitting.After the hull had been towed into the dock hall, the exterior paint work started, while the interior work continues.This will be Bernhard Schulte's third vessel which has been designed and constructed by Ulstein.

Netherlands-based OOS International has revved up the engines on its newbuild semi-submersible heavy lift crane accommodation vessel OOS Walcheren for the first time.The OOS Walcheren is currently under construction at China Merchants Heavy Industries (Jiangsu) Shipyard, said a press note from the Dutch offshore company .The OOS Walcheren is the sister vessel of the OOS Serooskerke, which is presently undergoing the final stages of commissioning before heading out for sea trials. Her expected delivery is within Q1 2020.The construction of OOS Walcheren commenced on the 24th May 2018 and it has taken 16 ½ months to start up her engines, which has bettered the OOS Serooskerke record by 10 days and less man-hours.

Cruise line Royal Caribbean International officially took delivery of the 26th ship in its fleet, 169,000 grt Spectrum of the Seas, in a ceremony Thursday in Bremerhaven, Germany.The first ship in the Quantum-Ultra class, the Meyer Werft built Spectrum of the Seas measures 347.1 meters long and 41.4 meters wide. Altogether, the vessel has 18 decks with 2,137 cabins offering space for 4,246 passengers in double occupancy and 1,551 crew members.The Bahamas flagged Spectrum of the Seas will be the largest and most expensive ship in Asia when she arrives to her new home in Shanghai on June 3…

Sister-ships Oceanic Sirius and Oceanic Vega have completed a round-the-clock, 10-day maintenance program at Damen Shiprepair Amsterdam (DSAm). Portugal’s Naval Rocha shipyard is reporting a surge in activity in the opening half of 2018 after delivering a series of drydock, wet basin and pier-side projects.Naval Rocha commercial director Sergio Rodrigues said the yard located in the heart of Lisbon Harbour on the north bank of the River Tagus has completed a wide variety of repair and conversion projects.Key work has involved containers, cruise, passenger and sailing ships, cargo and research survey vessels, naval ships, anchor handing tugs, supply vessels and dredgers.“Naval Rocha is a unique, modern shipyard,” said Mr Rodrigues. “We are located in a prime position in the centre of a European capital city which enjoys 300 days of sunshine a year.

Damen Shiprepair Dunkerque (DSDu) has completed an eight-day refurbishment project for the 132-metre DP2, self-propelled, jack-up vessel Sea Installer. Operated by A2SEA, which was purchased in 2017 by DEME’s subsidiary GeoSea, Sea Installer was purpose-built in 2012 for installing the next generation of large wind turbines off the coast of Europe. The primary task was the fitting of new spud can shoes to the vessel’s four columnar legs. These massive pieces of steelwork, weighing 160 tonnes each, required the deployment of specialist logistics including the use of self-propelled modular transporters to move them into position and a 700-tonne crawler crane. While Sea Installer was in the drydock at DSDu, the client also took the opportunity to prepare her for the next contract.

Gibraltar shipyard Gibdock said a surge in offshore vessel repair and maintenance work has included a special project for Norwegian offshore vessel owner and operator Solstad, to ensure that Normand Reach meets the hull cleanliness standards set by Australia’s National Biofouling Management Guidelines for commercial vessels. The 120.85-meter-long Solstad CSV entered the yard for a special wash and brush up on its way to Western Australia, where it has been reported as due to enter charter in the coming weeks to work in the Ichthys gas field development project.

German shipbuilder MEYER WERFT held a steel cutting ceremony on February 21 in Papenburg marking the ceremonial start of construction for the newest cruise liner for Rostock-based cruise company AIDA Cruises. The new cruise ship will be the world’s first capable of operating completely on liquefied natural gas (LNG). Felix Eichhorn, President of AIDA Cruises, pressed the start button of the computer-controlled cutting machine to commence work on the first steel plate for the next generation of AIDA cruise ships.

Damen Shiprepair Dunkerque is assisting DFDS Seaways, northern Europe’s largest shipping and logistics company, in a major refit and rebranding program, with five vessels successfully completed so far. Two more ferries are currently at the Dunkirk-based repair yard, which is the closest facility to the main cross-channel ferry routes. Three of DFDS’ ‘D-Class’ ferries - the Dover Seaways, Dunkerque Seaways and Delft Seaways - were upgraded in just three weeks. These vessels operate on the Dover-Dunkirk route.

Damen Shiprepair & Conversion (DSC) has recently completed works in Vlissingen and Brest on two major vessels in the fleet of dredging and marine construction specialist Jan de Nul Group. One of these is the Vole au vent, a 140-meter jack-up vessel built specifically for the installation of the latest generation of offshore wind turbines. The other is the trailing suction hopper dredger Leiv Eiriksson. Both vessels are among the largest in their classes, anywhere in the world.

Gibdock's ro-ro and container ship repair work continues, following the drydocking of two con-ro vessels operated by Canadian shipowner, Oceanex. Oceanex provides intermodal transportation services to the Canadian Atlantic provinces of Labrador and Newfoundland. Gibraltar-based Gibdock was selected by St John’s, Newfoundland-based Oceanex to carry out wide-ranging work on the 2013-built, 1300 teu Oceanex Connaigra, and the 1977-built, 1125 teu capacity, Oceanex Sanderling.
