Joining members of the maritime community to assist families of the six crew members of the FV Destination that went missing in the Bering Sea on February 11, 2017, Peoples Bank is now collecting donations for the families of the missing crew members. Donations to the F/V Destination Memorial Fund can be made at all Peoples Bank locations throughout Western Washington, and Peoples Bank, a long-time banking partner for the North Pacific Fleet, will not take any fees associated with the contributions made to this fund. Fully 100 percent of all donations made at Peoples Bank branches will be donated directly to the crew members’ families. The F/V Destination was registered in Sand Point, Alaska, and sailed out of Seattle.

The Coast Guard Foundation, a non-profit organization committed to the education and welfare of all Coast Guard members and their families, announced today that it will honor the men and women who serve in Alaska at its biennial Alaska Awards Dinner at The Hotel Captain Cook in Anchorage on Wednesday August 13th. The first episode of Discovery Channel’s 6-episode TV series about Maersk Line’s Triple-E vessel will be broadcast in Denmark on Thursday 24 October on the Discovery Channel. The series will be broadcast throughout Europe and Asia in November and December followed by Latin America in February and March of 2014. The series, titled “The World’s Biggest Ship,” will consist of six 45-minute episodes and give viewers the opportunity to see how the Triple-E was designed, the intricacies and challenges of building the ship and its eventual trials at sea and launch into operation.

On January 13, 2012, the Costa Concordia -- one of the largest and most luxurious cruise ships ever built -- ran aground off the coast of Italy leaving 32 people dead. The hulking vessel still remains where it first capsized – becoming a painful eyesore for locals as well as a growing environmental hazard. Now Discovery Channel returns to the scene of the shipwreck with Inside  Raising The Concordia, premiering Friday, September 20, at 10 PM E/P, to capture the major salvage operation taking place and reveal the inside story told by the elite team of engineers tasked with the seemingly impossible -- rotating the massive ship into an upright position and eventually removing it from the sea.

The 50-foot vessel, designed by Anderson Associates, & built by Pacifica has been delivered for gold dredging near Nome, Alaska. Anderson Associates, a Bremerton-based multidisciplinary engineering services firm, recently completed design of a new dredge vessel for Pacifica, a Seattle-based vehicle assembler. The vessel was designed specifically to meet the unique requirements of sub-surface dredging operations in the remote coastal waters of the Bering Sea, and is powered by twin 300HP Yamaha outboards.

Acoustic positioning technology from Sonardyne Inc, Houston, was selected to play a key role in a recent expedition aiming to solve one of the greatest mysteries of the 20th century. A Bluefin Robotics AUV (Autonomous Underwater Vehicle) was equipped with a Sonardyne Ranger 2 underwater target tracking system which was used by The International Group for Historic Aircraft Recovery (TIGHAR) to search for the remains of the Lockhead Electra aircraft flown by Amelia Earhart during her failed circumnavigation attempt in 1937.

Odyssey Marine Exploration (Nasdaq:OMEX), announced it has successfully recovered approximately 48 tons of silver bullion from a depth of approximately three miles. This initial recovery of bullion from the SS Gairsoppa, a 412-foot steel-hulled British cargo ship that sank in February 1941, totals 1,203 silver bars or approximately 1.4 million troy ounces of silver and has been transported to a secure facility in the United Kingdom. After unloading the cargo, taking on fuel and changing  personnel, recovery operations will continue and are expected to be completed in the third quarter of 2012.This record-breaking operation has so far produced the heaviest and deepest recovery of precious metals from a shipwreck.

JMS Naval Architects & Salvage Engineers (JMS) has named Blake Powell to the position of President. Mr. Powell previously served as Vice President. Rick Fernandes, who has been with the firm since its founding, has been named Vice President. Jack Ringelberg will remain onboard as Chief Executive Officer and Bruce Banks, who founded JMS in 1988, remains Chairman. Powell previously served as JMS Vice President and has over 20 years of experience providing naval architecture, marine engineering, marine surveying and marine casualty response services to a commercial and government client base representing all aspects of the maritime industry. Mr. Powell earned his degree in Naval Architecture from the University of California.

Edgar Hansen of the fishing vessel Northwestern—as featured on Discovery Channel's "Deadliest Catch," is coming to St. Michaels, MD and the Chesapeake Bay Maritime Museum on Sunday, August 14 for the 2nd annual Watermen’s Appreciation Day. Hansen agreed to attend the event after learning of some of the parallels both Alaskan fisherman and the Chesapeake’s watermen are facing. “I was floored when Edgar personally returned my phone call,” said Talbot County Watermen’s Association’s event coordinator, Lisa Gowe.

Miracle Marine built a landing craft for Joe Collins of the Discovery Channel’s Axmen show. Miracle Marine reported that this year, Axman Jimmy Smith wants one of their new boats as well. And Swampman Shelby Stanga will be using one of Miracle Marine’s demo boats in his show this year.

Last winter Reuben Trane, owner of Island Pilot was contacted by the producers of Discovery Channel’s HD Theater who were interested in featuring his DSe Hybrid 12m in an episode about the world’s most expensive rides. The show’s crew met Reuben and his wife, Cheryl, in Key Largo for time on board the DSe to experience her quiet ride and hybrid technology. Episode nine in “The World’s Most Expensive Rides” series aired March 7 at 9:00 p.m. EST featuring the DSe in one of its three segments. The DSe was introduced in the fall of 2008.

A television program currently airing on the Discovery Channel may offer a positive view on the marine community in general and the work done at International Paint. The program Industrial Junkie is part of a 10 episode series that has been commissioned by the Discovery Channel to offer insight into important major industries. One of the episodes is on paint and is dedicated to the research and manufacture of marine coatings, the preparation and painting of a cruise ship and how coatings can help ship owners save fuel and reduce their carbon footprints. International Paint was approached by the Discovery Channel last year, with filming for the paint episode taking place over two days in October when a camera crew visited the Felling site in the UK.
