Senator Wesley Livsey Jones gave his name to the famous ā€œJones Actā€ governing U.S. domestic maritime trade. But what do really know about him? It turns out that he was much more than a leading merchant marine policy maker. (i)Jones had a long career in the U.S. House of Representatives before he was a Senator, was an effective legislator, an astute politician, one of the hardest working legislators of his era, and always viewed as honest and forthright. His many maritime legislative successes included the Merchant Marine Actā€¦

Ā© svarshik / Adobe Stock

A new and deadly chapter of the decades-old Israel-Palestinian conflict is a reality check for an ambitious trade route. The India-Middle East-Europe Economic Corridor (IMEC), championed by Washington last month on the sidelines of the G20 summit in New Delhi and dubbed a Western rival to Chinaā€™s Belt and Road, had much to prove anyway. The latest conflict presses pause on any grand financial visions involving the neighbourhood.IMECā€™s chief backers waxed lyrical about the potential of the trade route involving railways, ports and green energy. Why the Titanic Disaster Continues to Enthrall

Ā© nyiragongo / Adobe Stock

The question on many minds this week is why did some of the worldā€™s richest men risk death to venture to the bottom of the sea in a cold and cramped ā€œexperimentalā€ submersible for a chance to glimpse the wreck of the Titanic? The ā€œunsinkableā€ ship that sunk on its maiden voyage across the Atlantic in 1912 after colliding with an iceberg is arguably the worldā€™s most well-known boat. The Titanic is recognisable to more of the worldā€™s population than, say, the Niña, the Pinta, and the Santa Maria (Christopher Colombusā€™s fleet that launched the Spanish conquest of the Americas)ā€¦

Protecting Offshore Energy Sources via USV

When most people discuss energy sources such as fossil fuel and green energy, it is from an ā€œeither-orā€ perspective. Some favor the former while others advocate for the latter. However, what is often lost in the arguments on both sides is that regardless of the type of energy being extracted or generated, those platforms that are offshore, especially oil rigs, oil and gas pipelines, and wind farms, are incredibly vulnerable to anyone who wants to attack these sources in wartimeā€¦

Subsea Mining Plans Pit Renewable Energy Demand Against Ocean Life

Deep sea sponges and other creatures live on and among valuable manganese nodules like this one that could be mined from the seafloor. ROV KIEL 6000/GEOMAR

As companies race to expand renewable energy and the batteries to store it, finding sufficient amounts of rare earth metals to build the technology is no easy feat. Thatā€™s leading mining companies to take a closer look at a largely unexplored frontier ā€“ the deep ocean seabed.A wealth of these metals can be found in manganese nodules that look like cobblestones scattered across wide areas of deep ocean seabed. But the fragile ecosystems deep in the oceans are little understoodā€¦

Are Unmanned Surface Vessels the Key to a 500-Ship U.S. Navy?

In an era of great power competition, navies ā€“ by virtue of their ability to span the globe and effectively deliver combat power ā€“ are likely to be the sine qua non of military power. This leads, naturally, to the tendency to count numbers of ship hulls when comparing the strength of navies. Lost on no one is the fact that the size of Chinaā€™s Navy now exceeds that of the U.S. Navy, and the gap in ship numbers is growing.During the Cold War, while the quality of their ships might not have been equal to that of the U.S.
