iOra, supplier of solutions for total information mobility, today announced the US Navy has purchased iOra Mobile Intranet to support the U.S. Navy’s plans to make their Distance Support portal available to Navy personnel while at sea. By using iOra’s Epsilon Technology and two-way offline portal solution, the U.S. Navy can get up-to-date safety information, medical procedures, technical support, and training for onboard personnel to and from its Fleet in a timely manner and in a familiar format that is easy for personnel to use. The result is the U.S. Navy can implement its plans to further improve operational effectiveness and safety procedures for its Fleet.

Today, the U.S. Navy uses compact discs (CDs) to deliver information to the Fleet. New CDs can take months to reach ships, and because of the volume of data, only a subset of available information can be delivered this way, resulting in delayed updates to critical information, such as repair manuals for a critical piece of onboard equipment.
By using iOra Mobile Intranet, the U.S. Navy will eliminate the use of CDs and deliver all content via Microsoft (MSFT)
’s SharePoint Portal Server.
The Navy needs to keep hundreds of gigabytes of content up-to-date using satellite and low bandwidth connections over ship-to-shore networks. iOra’s unique Epsilon Technology, which is built into iOra Mobile Intranet
, provides the ability to compress changes to any content by factors of 100 times compared to other technologies, making it cost-effective and time-efficient for the Navy to keep the portal updated.
