Iran has periodically threatened to close the strait to enemy shipping, while the United States and its allies have pledged to keep it open and maintain freedom of navigation, by force if necessary. The strait has become a symbolic flashpoint in the region-wide confrontation and indirect…

Iran Struggles to Find Enough Ships for Oil Exports

Photo: National Iranian Tanker Company

Iran faces a struggle to increase oil exports because many of its tankers are tied up storing crude, some are not seaworthy, and foreign shipowners remain reluctant to carry its cargoes. Tehran is seeking to make up for lost trade to Europe following the lifting of EU sanctions imposed in 2011 and 2012, which deprived it of a market that accounted for over a third of its exports and left it relying completely on Asian buyers. Iran has 55-60 oil tankers in its fleet, a senior Iranian government official told Reuters.

Iran Has Too Few Tankers to Sustain Oil Flow

Oil exports from Iran, OPEC’s second-largest producer, may drop because the nation’s tanker fleet is too small to carry all its cargoes, as European Union sanctions cause international ship owners to avoid the country. NITC owns 39 vessels, able to carry about 70 million barrels of crude, according to its website. The fleet would be insufficient to deliver the nation’s monthly exports of about 65 million barrels because journey durations can be as long as two months, said Dag Kilen, an analyst at Fearnley Consultants A/S, a unit of Norway’s second-largest shipbroker. Sanctions already cut shipments by 300,000 to 400,000 barrels a day, Barclays Capital said on March 7. Frontline Ltd., Overseas Shipholding Group Inc.

Sanctions May Cut Oil Flow as Ships Cancel Voyages

U.S. and European sanctions designed to pressure Iran over its nuclear program may be cutting the Persian Gulf nation’s oil exports, as vessels cancel trips to the country. Shipments have declined by 300,000 to 400,000 barrels a day, because sanctions are preventing Iran from selling oil, said Amrita Sen, an analyst at Barclay’s Capital in London. Half of the tankers booked to load at the country’s largest terminal last month didn’t complete the voyages, according to brokers, company officials and ship-tracking data. Ship owners are avoiding trade with Iran because U.S. financial sanctions are blocking payments, and the main providers of cover against risks, such as oil spills, are subject to the European Union’s ban on the purchase, transportation, financing and insurance of Iranian oil.

Iran Charters 550,000 ULCC

Iran has chartered a 555,000 dwt ULCC for floating oil storage to replace two VLCCs, tanker brokers said. The 1979-built Sea Giant is scheduled to be delivered in mid November for stationing off Kharg Island to replace the VLCCs Mountain Cloud (285,000 dwt) and Union (275,000 dwt) which will apparently be redelivered. The Sea Giant has been taken by the National Iranian Tanker Company (NITC) at around $15,750 a day on a monthly basis for up to 150 days, brokers said. After chartering a number of vessels over the summer NITC now has a fleet of 14 vessels, four of which are its own, with a combined storage capacity of around 5.24 million tons.
