Tech File: ABB Launches New Permanent Magnetic Shaft Generator

The latest in-line shaft generator from ABB is designed to enable ship operators to benefit from the multiple advantages of permanent magnet technology. The new generator brings flexibility and ease of installation to a wide range of vessels including bulk carriers, container carriers, liquid natural gas tankers and ferries transporting passengers and cars.The AMZ 1400 permanent magnet shaft generator is optimized for converter control and enables better efficiency than either induction or electrically excited synchronous machines at both full and partial loading.

Orders at Korea's 3 Big Shipyards to Break $30B

Korea's three major shipbuilders are expected to draw in orders worth $30 billion this year, according to a report on http://english.chosun.com. Reports put orders for Hyundai Heavy Industries at $13 billion, Samsung Heavy Industries at $10-11 billion, and Daewoo Shipbuilding and Marine Engineering at $10 billion. Samsung Heavy Industries won the most number of orders as of March with four liquid natural gas tankers, one floating production storage, one offloading vessel, and nine oil tankers.

Orders at Korean Shipbuilders to Break $30b

Korea's three major shipbuilders are expected to draw in orders worth $30b this year, Arirang News reported. Industry reports put orders for Hyundai Heavy Industries at $13b, Samsung Heavy Industries at $10-11b, and Daewoo Shipbuilding and Marine Engineering at $10b. Samsung Heavy Industries won the most number of orders as of March with four liquid natural gas tankers, one floating production storage, one offloading vessel, and nine oil tankers. Daewoo Shipbuilding and Hyundai Heavy Industries is also reportedly looking ahead to a stellar year and expected to secure their targets set for 2007 when foreign firms begin placing orders for various projects later on in the year. Iran, Venezuela Agree on Joint Operation

Petróleos de Venezuela (PDVSA) announced that Venezuela and Iran have agreed to explore setting up a joint shipbuilding operation. The preliminary agreement looks towards jointly building oil tankers, liquid natural gas tankers and other vessels. It would also train Venezuelans in shipbuilding technology. The deal was signed in Caracas between PDVSA and Sadra Iran Marine Industrial Company. Ties between the two oil-producing countries have become closer as Venezuelan president Hugo Chávez has sought to build international alliances to counter US economic and political dominance. The moves come as the Bush administration has clashed with Iran over its nuclear program.

The preliminary agreement envisions jointly building oil tankers, liquid natural gas tankers and other vessels, and training Venezuelans in shipbuilding technology. The deal was signed in Caracas between PDVSA and Sadra Iran Marine Industrial Company, according to the report. Ties between the two oil-producing countries have tightened as President Hugo Chávez has sought to build international alliances to counter U.S. economic and political dominance. Reports have indicated that Venezuela and Iran have agreed to explore setting up a joint shipbuilding operation in the South American country, state-run Petróleos de Venezuela (PDVSA) said. The preliminary agreement signed last week envisions jointly building oil tankers, liquid natural gas tankers and other vessels, and training Venezuelans in shipbuilding technology. The deal was signed last week in Caracas between PDVSA and Sadra Iran Marine Industrial Company, PDVSA said Friday. Ties between the two oil-producing countries have tightened as President Hugo Chávez has sought to build international alliances to counter U.S. economic and political dominance. Chávez, a self-defined socialist revolutionary, frequently accuses the U.S. government of wanting to overthrow him.

STX Engine Builds New Dual-Fuel Series

The MAN B&W Diesel Group has extended their existing, over 20-year license agreement with Korean licensee STX Engine. Within Korea, STX is now also licensed to build the new MAN B&W Diesel dual-fuel engine: the 51/60DF. The 51/60DF engine model is particularly suitable as propulsion for LNG (liquid natural gas) tankers. The Korean group STX, which has been a licence partner of the MAN B&W Diesel Group since 1984, is involved in the LNG sector with its own shipping company STX PanOcean and builds its own LNG tankers in the STX Shipyard. New propulsion concepts for this type of carrier are planning with dual-fuel engines, for which STX is bringing their own competence into the company with the new license agreement.

Spanish Shipbuilder Gets Tanker Contract

Oil and gas group Repsol-YPF had awarded the construction of three liquid natural gas tankers to Spanish state shipbuilder Astilleros Espanoles. The order is reportedly worth $579.4 million. The boats each have a capacity of 138,000 cu. m and would be used to ship liquid natural gas from Trinidad and Tobago, Repsol's gas unit Gas Natural said.
