Sea Technology Report

The Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution (WHOI), the largest independent institution of its kind in the world, recently began developing a new piston corer for retrieving sediments from the ocean floor. Once complete in 2006, the deep-water coring system will be the largest in the U.S. and among the biggest in the world. The corer’s enormous weight — 25,000 pounds — coupled with the environmental demands associated with working in water up to 20,000 ft. deep presented major technical challenges to the system required to lower the corer to the sea floor then recover it, along with its ancient sediment samples. IXSEA Names Hoof New Sales Manager

In order to strengthen their activities in the scientific market and to branch out further into other industries such as defense, IXSEA appointed Arne Hoof as Sales Manager based in the new IXSEA subsidiary in Hannover, Germany. Arne will be developing the market for IXSEA products and managing sales in Germany. Arne holds an Engineering Diploma in Geodesy from the University of Hannover and a Certificate of Academic Proficiency in Hydrographic Surveying from the University of New Brunswick, Canada. He previously worked in customer support and software training and as project engineer at Hamburg Port Authority with CARIS Geographic Information Systems bv.

Belgian Navy Awards Contract to IXSEA

IXSEA announced the signing of a contract with the Belgian Navy to provide an integrated survey solution for their mine warfare data center (MWDC), the company announced in Paris on November 15. The purpose of the MWDC is to collect hydrographic data and to produce electronic and paper charts with additional military layers. IXSEA's integrated survey solution (ISS) will be used onboard minehunters for route survey, homeland security and REA (rapid environment assessment). The ISS includes state of the art imagery sensors : COTS IXSEA’s Synthetic Aperture Sonar (SHADOWS), IXSEA's new Gradiometer, Kongsberg’s Multibeam Echosounder, and IXSEA's GAPS, a positioning and motion sensor.

IXSEA Launches Refitted Survey Vessel

IXSEA has completed work on the SV John Lethbridge on behalf of Comex Deep Sea Salvage Limited, a wholly owned subsidiary of Subsea Resources PLC. The refit was undertaken by H2X shipyard in cooperation with IXSEA and COMEX SA. The vessel is currently in the Atlantic working on a number of projects including the Miranda project and the Ella project. The survey ship is equipped with top of the range sonar equipment, fitted by IXSEA, which is capable of surveying depths to 6000 m as well as a Comanche Sub-Atlantic ROV, which can reach similar depths. The ROV has two work manipulators, HMI lights, digital cameras and flash and 100kgf/ 200 lbf DC Thrusters.
