Algoma Central Corporation announced it has placed an order with Hyundai Mipo Shipyard in South Korea to build two 37,000 DWT ice class product tanker vessels for a total investment of CA$127 million (about US$96.2 million).These new ships will be entered on long-term time charters to Irving Oil under Canadian flag, servicing the energy company’s refinery in Saint John, New Brunswick, with deliveries to ports in Atlantic Canada and the U.S. East Coast.Delivery of the new vessels is expected during the first quarter of 2025.

After 60,000 hours of service, crab fisherman Robert Ross decided that his 19-liter Cummins 1150M had earned a rest. The 500 HP engine had been a perfect match for his 72- by 26-foot aluminum boat so he ordered up a new Cummins KTA19-M3 at 500 HP, continuous duty, from his local supplier Cummins Sales and Service in Fredericton, New Brunswick, in eastern Canada. Ross had his well-maintained 39-year-old boat, the Kara-Matt, hauled out at a shipyard and Dugas Equipment Ltd. of Caraquet, New Brunswick took on the repower.

Year-over-year total cargo tonnage at Port Saint John, Eastern Canada’s largest port by volume, increased by over 4 million metric tonnes in 2017. Overall cargo tonnage handled for the year 2017 was 30,458,422 metric tonnes, a 15% increase over 2016. Cranes: much more than just critical equipment. At ZPMC, it means the supply chain itself. In post-Panamax world – that is to say one which includes an expanded, deepened and improved Panama Canal – there are many layers to the logistics onion. These include reinforced and improved berths and bollards, deepened blue water harbors, improved intermodal connections ashore and a reshuffling of ever larger tonnage for ports that can handle those ships. All of that is important, of course, but it is the post-Panamax sized cranes which may be the hottest commodity on the water as the race for the cargo reaches full speed. How those cranes are sourced and acquired may surprise you. It turns out that the global crane business is very much a ‘turnkey’ operation.

The global trade enabler will start running existing operations on 1 January 2017 and work in partnership with the Saint John Port Authority on a planned expansion programme expected to be completed in 2021, with the lease continuing for 30 years after. The Rodney Container Terminal is a multi-purpose terminal handling container traffic in Saint John, the only Atlantic Canada port that is served by the country’s Class I railways, Canada National Railway (CN) and Canada Pacific Railway (CP) and is CP’s only Atlantic gateway port.

The Canadian Coast Guard has transferred a fast rescue craft to the Maritimes branch of the Canadian Coast Guard Auxiliary. The fast rescue craft was previously used by the staff of the CCGS Courtenay Bay at the Coast Guard SAR lifeboat station based in Saint John, New Brunswick. The Auxiliary will use the vessel for search and rescue training and missions, and to increase their presence at marine-related events in the region. The vessel is a 2002 Zodiac – Model 749 Diesel Powered Rigid Hull Inflatable Boat (RHIB). The diesel, seven-metre boats are open, fast rescue craft which are used extensively at Coast Guard SAR lifeboat stations and on major Canadian Coast Guard ships.

A partnership between Canadian government and private industry today unveiled high precision 3D printed models of HMS Erebus, Sir John Franklin’s lead ship found last year in Canada’s Arctic waters as part of Parks Canada’s search for the vessels of the lost 1845 expedition. The model was unveiled in Fredericton, New Brunswick. Officials from Fisheries and Oceans Canada joined with Canadian geospatial software company CARIS and geomatics technology innovation support centre TECTERRA to unveil the models.

Nebraska's Supreme Court ruled against a challenge to the Keystone XL oil pipeline's route through the state on Friday, clearing the way for the Republican-controlled U.S. Congress to try to force President Barack Obama to approve the project. The 1,179-mile (1,900-km) pipeline would send up to 830,000 barrels per day of oil sands crude from Hardisty, Alberta, across the U.S. border to Steele City, Nebraska, where it would connect with the project's already-built Gulf Coast leg. July 2008 - TransCanada Corp announces plans to expand its existing 590,000 bpd Keystone oil pipeline system to the Gulf Coast. September 2008 - TransCanada Corp files an application with the U.S. State Department for a presidential permit allowing construction of the project.

Green Marine and the Association of Canadian Port Authorities (ACPA) have entered into a Memorandum of Understanding with the goal of jointly expanding efforts to reduce the marine industry’s environmental footprint and encourage the industry to continuously improve its environmental performance. The announcement was made in conjunction with the ACPA 56th Annual General Meeting and Assembly taking place in Belledune, New Brunswick. The MoU was signed earlier this summer during Green Marine’s annual conference, GreenTech 2014, in Saint John New Brunswick. The agreement will serve as a framework for the advancement of the Green Marine Environmental Program and increased collaboration on related initiatives.

The North America Stevedoring Company (NASCO) division (Chicago) of Quebec Stevedoring says it has received a coveted award under the American Equity Underwriters Inc. (AEU) Safety Award Program. Awarded in recognition of the best performing companies in the area of health and safety among AEU's 500 members nationwide, NASCO won in the category of companies with under 100 employees. Winners in each category are determined by the ratio of the number and severity of accidents per hours worked for each calendar year.
