Subsea 7 Pipelay Vessel to be Equipped with Huisman’s Crane

Dutch company Huisman has secured a contract from Subsea 7 for the delivery of its 500MT offshore mast crane for one of pipelay vessels for deep water installations.The 500mt Offshore Mast Crane will be equipped with a passive and active heave compensation system on the main hoist to counter-act the vessel’s heave motion when landing a product onto the seabed.Huisman has upgraded its heave compensation system with a variety of new control modes to extend the operational window…

World's Largest Cruise Ship: Meyer Turku Delivers Royal Caribbean's Icon of the Seas

Finnish shipbuilder Meyer Turku on Monday delivered the world's largest cruise ship, the 248,655 GT Icon of the Seas, to U.S.-based Royal Caribbean International.The 365-meter-long cruise ship has 20 decks (including 18 guest decks) and surpasses the previous world's largest, Royal Caribbean's Oasis-class Allure of the Seas. With 2,805 staterooms, Icon is able to carry 5,610 passengers at double occupancy, or up to 7,600 passengers if every cabin is maxed out—another cruise industry record.

Norwegian Firm to Supply Helideck for Hornbeck's Offshore Wind Vessel

Marine Aluminium AS has won a contract to supply the U.S. offshore vessel firm Hornbeck Offshore Services a helideck for its new conversion project. The 21-meter helideck has a landing capacity of up to Sikorsky S-92-sized helicopters.As previously reported by Offshore Engineer, Hornbeck Offshore will convert one of its recently acquired 280-foot offshore supply vessels (OSV) to a service operation vessel (SOV) to meet the growing demand of the U.S. offshore wind market, as well as to serve the demands of the offshore flotel market.

The acquisition covers a complete steel fabrication, engineering and construction facility in Redzikowo, Poland, from where Tritec has been supporting Vestdavit as its principal davit assembly partner for more than a decade.“With 65 dedicated employees specializing in steel-structure manufacturing, hydraulic and mechanical assembly, and the factory-acceptance testing required for davits from 1 to 16 tons, Tritec is a worthy addition to our enterprise,” says Vestdavit Managing Director Rolf Andreas Wigand.

SC Ports Constructs New Container Terminal

South Carolina (SC) Ports has celebrated the structural completion of the operations building at Hugh K. Leatherman Sr. Terminal, a new container terminal along the Cooper River, which will open in March 2021.S.C. Ports celebrated today the structural completion of the terminal’s new operations building. More than 300 people — contractors, port employees, elected leaders and community members — cheered as a steel beam and tree were placed atop the steel structure as part of a traditional “topping out” ceremony.The 34,853-square-foot building, built by Samet Corp., will have offices, meeting spaces, crane operator rest and training areas, and a full-service kitchen, as well as the backup power required to maintain critical infrastructure in the event of a power outage.Sen. CDWE Wins Taiwanese OWF Gig

Taiwanese marine joint venture (JV) company CSBC-DEME Wind Engineering (CDWE) has signed two contracts for the transport and installation of foundations and turbines at the 300MW Zhong Neng offshore wind farm (OWF).The JV between Taiwanese outfit CSBC and Belgian contractor DEME Offshore will aim to deliver the project, owned by China Steel Corporation (CSC), in 2024.The 300 MW Zhong Neng offshore wind farm, developed by China Steel Corporation, is planned for completion in 2024. In order to implement the localisation policy required by the Taiwanese government, the Zhong Neng Wind Power Corporation Preparatory Office has worked closely with CDWE, with the aim of maximising local content.

HMS Prince of Wales Goes for Maiden Voyage

Britain's newest aircraft carrier has sailed out of Rosyth dockyard for the first time. The GBP3bln, 65000 ton HMS Prince of Wales will sit at anchor in the River Forth for around 2-7 days following departure from the dockyard to complete Initial Sea Safety Training.The vessel is the sister ship of HMS Queen Elizabeth."Cammell Laird is proud to have played a key role in the construction of this magnificent vessel – one of the most powerful surface warships ever constructed in the UK," said a press release from the British shipbuilding company.Following Cammell Laird’s successful completion of nine units for the first Queen Elizabeth-class aircraft carrier, the company’s block building expertise was called upon once again in 2013.

For the first time in its nearly 50-year history, Port of Indiana-Burns Harbor welcomed general cargo vessel HC Melina carrying a unique shipment of two, large rubber-tire gantry (RTG) cranes destined for the CSX Intermodal Terminals’ facility in Chicago.Once the 68-piece shipment is fully assembled, the RTG cranes will have a span of eight containers wide and with a hoisting height of one over four containers high. Hydroniq Coolers Wins Aas Mek Contract

Norwegian shipyard Aas Mekaniske Verksted has awarded Hydroniq Coolers a contract to deliver its hull-integrated seawater cooling system to a vessel the shipbuilder is constructing for wellboat company Sølvtrans.Under the contract, Aalesund-based Hydroniq Coolers – formerly named Sperre Coolers – will supply its Rack seawater cooling solutions to the wellboat.The Rack cooler differs from other cooling systems as it is integrated in the hull below the main engine room of the vessel. Here it safely reduces temperatures in the ship’s engines and other auxiliary systems through use of seawater – but without taking up valuable engine room space.“When we developed the Rack cooler, we combined the benefits from box and plate coolers, without the disadvantages of either system.

The 22,000-tonne topside for the drilling platform was lifted into position in one single lift on the Johan Sverdrup field last weekend. Buchan Alpha Arrives in Shetland for Decommissioning

The Buchan Alpha oil production vessel has arrived safely in Lerwick, Shetland for disposal. A semi-submersible moored floating production vessel, weighing 12,000 tonnes, Buchan Alpha was built in 1973 as a drilling rig and converted for production purposes in Stornoway between 1978-80. The vessel commenced production in 1981 from the Buchan field, located in blocks 21/1A and 20/5A, and has subsequently also produced the nearby Hannay field. Production ceased, as planned, on 12 May 2017 having produced around 148mm barrels of oil. The contract for disposal was internationally tendered and awarded to Veolia working with their strategic partner in decommissioning, Peterson, who have a proven safety and environmental track record in the decommissioning of oil and gas assets.

ESG Sees Green With its Tier IV Thunderbolt Design

Eastern Shipbuilding’s forward-thinking inland towboat design now features CAT Tier 4 propulsion and aftertreatment. When Eastern Shipbuilding Group (ESG) introduced its cutting edge 4,000 hp Thunderbolt inland towboat designed around twin azimuthing AAA Propulsion electric V-Pod propulsion and diesel-electric technology back in 2015, the approach was collaborative, with input from operators, naval architects (Gilbert Associates, Inc. (GAI)) and propulsion OEM’s. In selecting the podded propulsion system for inclusion on the design, Eastern met with two inland owner/operators that had Z-Drive towboats, and others that didn’t. Starting as far back as 2013, listening to each and noting their concerns, it was decided that the V-Pod was the best solution.

ROG Ship Repair Completes FPSO Moonpool Project

Holland’s ROG Ship Repair said it has come to the aid of a Floating Production & Storage Offshore (FPSO) vessel ran into problematic weather conditions while being towed from Europe to the Middle East. Having recently been assigned a new contract, the 89,184 dwt, 248.1 m long FPSO Aoka Mizu (Japanese for Bluewater), owned and operated by Holland’s Bluewater Energy Services, will be utilized for the early production system (EPS) phase of the development on Hurricane’s offshore field in the North Sea.

Terex Floating Cranes for Open Sea Get Approval

Terex Port Solutions (TPS) has obtained design approval for Terex Gottwald Model 8 floating cranes in the G HPK 8200 B four-rope grab variant operated on the open sea. This was necessary because the Lloyd's Register Code for Lifting Appliances in a Marine Environment has changed since the initial approval of the machines in 2007. The design of the crane, which offers an outreach of maximum 50 m, a 63 t grab curve and lifting speeds of up to 140 m/min, has also been completely reworked in the meantime and adapted to the current Model 8 series standard. According to Lloyd’s Register, the G HPK 8200 B cranes can be used at wave heights of up to 2.5 m and wind speeds of up to 20 m/s.

Euronav Inks Two Charter Deals

Euronav NV announces that it has signed two long-term time charter contracts of seven years each with Valero Energy Inc. for Suezmax vessels with specialised Ice Class 1C capability starting in 2018. In order to fulfil this contract, Euronav has ordered two high specification Ice Class Suezmax vessels from Hyundai Heavy Industries shipyard in South Korea. Additional specifications for these vessels include substantially increased steel structure, specific emissions controls and other bespoke operational capabilities. A Case for Propeller Guards & Cutters

As I was preparing for Thanksgiving dinner I put on Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade. While Indiana Jones and Doctor Elsa Schneider were being chased by the Brotherhood of the Cruciform sword through Venice and their boat was neatly shredded by the propellers of a larger vessel, it had me thinking of how much propeller technology has changed over the years. And how hopefully Indiana’s boat did not actually damage that vessel’s propeller. Recently an article passed though my news feed about the first 3D printed propeller. This is indicative of the direction the industry is taking.
