Mostraum Delivered to Utkilen

Bergen-headquartered shipping company Utkilen said it has taken delivery of Mostraum, the LNG-ready 10,500 DWT chemical tanker.The vessel is stainless steel tanker and is a very environmentally friendly design with focus on low fuel consumption, reduced NOx emissions and to prepare her for possible future upgrades of fuel with the installed LNG ready engine, claimed a press release.Shore power is installed with a capacity enough to handle loading and unloading. MJP Awarded Taiwan Coast Guard Contract

Marine Jet Power (MJP) has been awarded a multi-unit, multi-year contract with CSBC Shipyard to provide propulsion for 15, 100-ton class vessels for the Taiwan Coast Guard (TCG).The 34-meter vessels will be built at CSBC’s facility in Keelung, Taiwan. Featuring dual MJP stainless steel 750 DRB waterjets, the vessels are predicted to exceed 30 knots and will be powered by MTU inboard diesel engines.Selected for its superior quality and durability in the field, MJP’s DRB line of waterjets are constructed from duplex stainless-steel and feature all inboard hydraulics.

MJP to Supply Waterjets for New US Army Landing Craft

Shipbuilder Vigor has selected Marine Jet Power (MJP) as the propulsion provider for the U.S. Army’s new Maneuver Support Vessel (Light), MSV(L) vessels.Vigor was awarded the 10-year, $979,390,000 MSV(L) contract in 2017 to construct a new generation of landing craft to replace the existing LCM-8 Mike boats.The new vessels will feature triple drive MJP 750 DRB waterjets, constructed from duplex stainless steel and offering the latest advancements in MJP’s proprietary mixed flow technology. The propulsion package has been optimized to fit the needs of the U.S.

Rolls-Royce Propulsion for New Hong Kong Fast Ferries

Rolls-Royce said it has been contracted to deliver Kamewa waterjet propulsion units and MTU engines for three 42m high-speed, lightweight carbon fiber ferries for operation between Hong Kong and Guangzhou, China. The vessels will be built at the Brødrene Aa shipyard in Norway. The same shipyard has also ordered Rolls-Royce propulsion for two similarly-sized ferries to serve routes in the north of Norway. As well as Kamewa steel-series waterjets from Rolls-Royce, all five vessels will be powered by MTU series 2000 diesel engines.

New Pilot Boat Enters Service in Turkey

A newly built pilot boat Kara Yusuf, named after the owner’s grandfather, went into service on March 4, 2017 in Turkey. The boat will provide pilot transfer service in the southwest region of the Marmara Sea. Designed by Robert Allan Ltd., of Vancouver Canada, the boat was built by ICDAS Shipyard in Turkey for their own use as well as for marketing to the pilotage industry. Designated as the RAlly 1600 class, the 16 m boat is constructed with a steel hull and aluminum deckhouse.

ClassNK Bulletin Examines 2015 Developments

Classification society ClassNK informs it has released a summary of the latest industry developments in its annual Technical Bulletin, which this year covers topics including marine energy usage, research on fatigue strength and R&D project outcomes. Stolt Acquires Three Ships for European Fleet

Stolt Tankers B.V. has agreed to acquire three 5,800 dwt fully stainless steel parcel tankers from Odfjell Tankers AS. The ships, which were built in 1997-1998 and are sister ships of three tankers currently operated by Stolt Tankers, are expected to join the Stolt-Nielsen Inter-Europe Service by the end of August 2015. Further terms of the transaction were not disclosed. Commenting on the purchase, Hans P. Feringa, President of Stolt Tankers, said, "We are pleased to have acquired these well priced, high quality assets, which enhance the scale efficiency of our fleet of European regional parcel tankers. The three ships are highly specialised, with 20 duplex stainless steel tanks, ICE class 1A and fitted with nitrogen generators.

Verotec’s VMEbus Sails Through Shock Test

Verotec has supplied suites of five different VMEbus-based systems to a global US-based naval and marine systems integrator. The systems will be used in military shipboard applications, so meeting exacting shock and vibration requirements was a critical requirement. Each system consist of a VMEbus backplane and two military grade power converters mounted in custom plug-in modules in special subracks based on Verotec’s KM6-HD family. Extensive Finite Element Analysis (FIA) confirmed that the systems would withstand an onerous 25g shock test and also vibration to MIL-STD-167.

Newbuild Chemical Tanker Employs Innovative Tank Design

The 12,500MT Sunrise Hope is the world's first chemical tanker to use a combination of duplex stainless steel and stainless clad steel in the construction of its cargo tanks.

The world's first chemical tanker to use a combination of duplex stainless steel and stainless clad steel in the construction of its cargo tanks was delivered to Oita-based Hiro Naviera S.A. November 15, 2014 by Usuki Shipyard Co., Ltd., Japanese classification society ClassNK reported. The 12,500MT chemical tanker Sunrise Hope, owned by Hiro Naviera S.A., will be operated by Nippon Marine Co., Ltd. The eco-ship design vessel is equipped with 14 cargo tanks, all which employ duplex stainless steel technology.

MJP Introduces Hybrid Waterject

Marine Jet Power (MJP) introduced a new product concept that is optimized for high-speed applications. According to MJP, the new hybrid waterjet combines the best characteristics of the MJP DRB series with the Ultrajet series. MJP said the idea to take the best from its DRB and Ultrajet series and make a Hybrid that is optimized for high-speed applications came soon after MJP’s merger with Ultrajet. The concept originated with what MJP believes is the best duplex stainless steel jet pump on the market.

MJP Waterjets in TYM Fast Attack Craft Trials

Successful sea trials of Tampa Yacht Manufacturing’s latest 50 Fast Attack Craft won praise for the performance of MJP waterjets. The 50’ Fast Attack Craft is a carbon-fibre reinforced, GRP 16.15M (53’) LOA, patrol vessel with a beam of 4.43M (14’8-1/2”). The design has been a best seller for Tampa Yacht Manufacturing and exists in multiple mission configurations. The latest craft is the first to have been equipped with MJP waterjets but retains the standard MAN R6 800HP diesel engines running at 2,350rpm, and a ZF 500 Gearbox at 1.125:1 Ratio.

ClassNK Issues New Welding Guidelines

Classification society ClassNK (Chairman and President: Noboru Ueda) announced that it has released new Guidelines on the Welding of Duplex Stainless Steels. The guidelines have been developed to help shipyards safely and effectively make use of new duplex steels that are increasingly being used in the construction of cargo tanks for chemical carriers. China Yard Launches Mult-parcel Chemical Tankship

Mingde Heavy Industry has launched what it says is the biggest stainless steel inner-hulled chemical tanker ever built in Asia. The length of this vessel is 183m, 28.4m in breadth and 15.2m in depth, and a loaded draft of 10m. The vessel is powered by a low speed diesel engine driving a single propeller for unrestricted navigation, with a dead weight tonnage of 30,000T. This tanker can carry 28 parcels of chemicals, and all of its inner hull for cargo is 2205 duplex stainless steel.

Duplex stainless steel, NSSC®2120 by Nippon Steel & Sumikin Stainless Steel Corporation was recentlly chosen for the construction of two domestic tankers. Sasaki Shipbuilding Co., Ltd. & Hakata Shipbuilding Co., Ltd. became the first shipbuilders in Japan to use stainless steel in the recent construction of the vessels, although these days, duplex stainless steels (ASTM A240M S31803, S32205) are increasingly being used for the construction of chemical tankers around the world.
