The first container-ship in the new Asia service Loop 7 - the Taurus,  14.424 TEU, belonging to the Ocean Alliance - has berthed in the Port of Hamburg.Port of Hamburg said that this service is part of the new Day 3 Product, with which the Alliance consisting of CMA CGM, Cosco, Evergreen and OOCL is entering its third year.With DAY 3, the Ocean Alliance has 330 containerships in 38 services, increasing its transport capacity to 3.8 million TEU. Taiwanese shipping company Wan Hai Lines announced the enhancement of its Japan service coverage.With effect from early April 2019, the company shall upgrade its existing New Super 1 service and also extend one of its existing Japan Kanto service to cover Malaysia, the provider of full-containerized shipping service said in a press note.Upgrade existing New Super 1 service(NS1) to Panamax vessel size: The service will maintain 4 vessel deployment with WHL deploying 2 x 4250Teu vessels, while IAL and OOCL deploys 1 vessel each. Norwegian oil and gas firm Equinor has entered into a long-term agreement with Malaysia's Global Petro Storage for a terminal and storage for liquified petroleum gas (LPG) volumes in Port Klang, in South-East Asia.According to statement from the petroleum and wind energy company, GPS will build a new facility to execute this agreement with startup of operations planned for mid-2021. The world’s biggest container ship, OOCL United Kingdom, made her maiden call at Malaysia's Westports in Port Klang on her way to China.The OOCL United Kingdom, with a carrying capacity of 21,413 TEUs, is one of the carrier’s six ‘G Class’ vessels and they are currently the world’s largest container ship.The vessel berthed at Container Terminal 8, Westports new container wharf that was completed in 2017.Westports has earmarked nine high-performance ship-to-shore cranes to handle OOCL United Kingdom’s containers. Port Klang Authority (PKA) announced that the 2nd phase of the increase in Port Klang’s container tariff which was due to be implemented on 1st September 2018, will be deferred to 1st March 2019.The tariff review was approved in 2015 whereby an increase of 30% was to be carried out in two phases. The increase was gazetted via PKA Scales of Rates, Dues and Charges Bylaws 2015 and was notified to all port users and industry players through Port Klang Authority General Manager’s circular in August 2015.The first phase of 15% increase was implemented on 1st November 2015 while the 2nd phase of another 15% tariff increase was scheduled to take effect on 1st September 2018.

A $250 million superyacht, impounded as part of a hunt for assets linked to the multi-billion dollar investigation into 1Malaysia Development Bhd, arrived at a port in Malaysia on Tuesday about six months after it was seized.The Cayman Islands-flagged Equanimity was first seized in the Indonesian holiday venue of Bali in February at the request of U.S. authorities investigating 1MDB.The Malaysian state fund is at the center of money-laundering probes in at least six countries, including the United States, Switzerland and Singapore. A total of $4.5 billion was misappropriated from 1MDB by high-level officials of the fund and their associates, according to the U.S.

The provider of container shipping and global transportation services APL has announced that the Gulf Asia Express 2 (GA2) service will soon be calling the port of Umm Qasr.The CMA CGM=owned company said that the service will also make a second call to Jebel Ali during the return leg of its service rotation to Asia. These developments demonstrate APL’s commitment to continuously provide market connectivity between the Far East and Middle East.The enhanced GA2 service is primed to offer Asian shippers direct access to the Umm Qasr port in Iraq which is only accessible through feeder services via Jebel Ali currently.

Pacific International Lines (PIL), Singapore’s leading containership operator, announces two upgraded weekly services on the Far East – Red Sea service route. Done in collaboration with Ocean Alliance, the routes named RSS and RES will commence operations in March 2018, superseding the current three services RSS, RS3 and RS5. The route will be operated with a series of 17 x 11,000 to 14,000TEU vessels including its latest newbuilds, the 11,923TEU P Class in the service. The highly efficient and versatile P Class were purpose-built for Red Sea, with a ballast water treatment system fitted onboard and various energy saving measures implemented in its design. The enhanced Red Sea service will extensively cover North Asia and South East Asia with direct connections to the main Red Sea markets.

APL announced the launch of a new Korea China Straits (KCS) service that will serve the key Asian markets of China, Korea, Singapore, Malaysia, Indonesia and the Philippines. The weekly service will link Nansha in South China to the Straits of Singapore and Port Klang as well as Indonesia; offer superior transit between Indonesia and Manila; and call Lianyungang in Jiangsu where few carriers provide access to. The KCS service will reinforce APL’s footprint in Intra-Asia where the carrier seeks to fortify its presence as a leading ocean carrier. The offering injects new capacity that allows APL to transport shipments from North Asia to its network of ports across Southeast Asia. It also offers yet another option that shippers can leverage for market access and competitive advantage.

Two new maritime lines are launched from Hamad Port which will enhance Qatar’s trade connections with various ports in China, India, Malaysia, Turkey and Greece, among other countries. Qatar News Agency (QNA)  said that both lines will run on a weekly basis. The first line starts in the Mediterranean and will be serviced by with four ships, with a total capacity of 6,000 containers including 400 reefer containers. The China Gulf Express Service will connect Shanghai in China with Hamad Port, with designated stops at Ningbo (China), Kaohsiung (Taiwan), Xiamen (China), Shekou (China) and Port Klang (Malaysia) en route to Qatar. A single ship will ply this route and have a capacity of 6,000 containers, including 400 reefer containers, according to the MoTC.

An International Maritime Organization (IMO) training in Malaysia has seen port State control officers practice inspecting air pollution and energy efficiency rules aboard a container ship in Johor Port. The participants from across Malaysia have been taking part in the three-day workshop (13-15 February) focusing on how to effectively enforce IMO’s MARPOL Annex VI regulations. The interactive workshop included class-based lectures and exercises, as well as practical training on board, in which relevant certificates and documentation, fuel tank arrangement and bunker fuel samples were inspected. It is the first time that onboard training has taken place under the GloMEEP project, which supports countries in addressing air pollution and greenhouse gas emissions from ships.

Port Klang Authority stated that Port Klang registered a positive growth of 10.8% in 2016 in container handling compared to 2015 with a total of 13,169,577 TEU’s, Northport handled 3,223,544 TEU’s while Westports handled 9,946,033 TEU’s. In terms of import container throughput, Port Klang handled 2,063,736 TEU’s,registering growth of 3.6 % compared to 2015’s performance - Northport handled 802,993 TEU’s while Westports handled 1,260,743 TEU’s in 2016. TEU’s compared to 2015; Northport handled 760,148 TEU’s and Westports handled 1,278,379 TEU’s. Port Klang handled 9,067,314 TEU’s in terms of Transshipment throughput in 2016, registering a growth of 14.3 % compared to 2015; Northport handled 1,660,403 TEU’s and Westports handled 7,406,911 TEU’s. state of the art cargo handling equipment.

Taiwan's Wan Hai Lines Ltd will expand further on its already extensive south-east Asia network by joining Thailand-Belawan Service (also known as TBS) on 7th of January 2017, to provide a direct service from Thailand to Belawan.   The service will be jointly operated with "K" Line, by using 2 vessels with effective capacity of 1,400 TEU. Wan Hai and "K" Line will deploy one vessel each.    TBS service will be a 14-day fixed round trip schedule, the port rotation will be: Bangkok – Laem Chabang – Singapore – Port Klang North Port – Belawan – Singapore – Laem Chabang – Bangkok.   Wan Hai Lines is confident that the new service will provide customers with better frequency and service coverage in south-east Asia sections.

APL today announced the launch of the India East Coast Express (IEX) service – a new weekly service which directly connects the North Asia markets of Korea and China to Chennai, India. “The new IEX service facilitates our customers’ growing business need for additional and more competitive shipping options. Through the IEX service, shippers will benefit from fast and reliable transit between the North, Southeast and South Asia markets. Additionally, the strategic port calls of the IEX service at the key transshipment hubs of Singapore and Port Klang will open shippers’ access to APL’s wider service network for global connectivity,” said Tonnie Lim, APL Head of Intra-Asia Trade.

APL today announced the launch of a new Red Sea Express 2 (RE2) Service. Directly linking China to the Red Sea ports of Jeddah, Sokhna and Aqaba, the new RE2 Service expands APL’s Asia-Middle East service network to meet its customers’ growing shipping needs. Designed to enable fast connections between Asia and the Middle East, the RE2 Service offers competitive transit times to Jeddah, Sokhna and Aqaba. Serving the Shanghai and Ningbo export market with additional shipment booking cutoff times, the RE2 Service complements the APL Red Sea Express (REX) Service and provides an alternative choice for customers to tap on the China market. The new RE2 Service will call the ports of Shanghai, Ningbo, Kaohsiung, Shekou, Port Klang, Jeddah, Sokhna, Aqaba, Djibouti and Singapore.

Radio Holland Malaysia opened a new office in Johor, Malaysia to support shipping in the ports of Johor and the vicinity. Over the years, Radio Holland Malaysia has expanded its business to the Southern Region of Malaysia known as Gelang Patah, Johor. With this new office, Radio Holland Malaysia aims to be close by to perform service in the ports of Johor. Already with an office in Port Klang, the new office is located near Malaysia’s container terminal, The Port of Tanjung Pelepas (PTP) located at the confluence of the main east-west shipping lanes.

Chief Executive of the Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore (MPA), Andrew Tan, attended the second Port Authorities Roundtable (PAR) in Rotterdam. Hosted by the Port of Rotterdam Authority (PoR), the closed-door roundtable event brought together port authorities from major ports in Asia, Europe and US to network, exchange views and explore areas of collaboration. Participants included port authorities which attended the inaugural PAR in Singapore such as Ningbo Municipal Port Administration Bureau, Port Klang Authority, and Japan, Bureau of Port and Harbor, as well as new participants such as Port of Hamburg, Port of Los Angeles, Port of Long Beach and Port of Guangzhou.

CMA CGM and PSA Singapore Terminals (PSA) have confirmed that they will establish form a joint venture company CMA CGM-PSA Lion Terminal Pte. Ltd. (CPLT) to operate and use four mega container berths in Singapore. CPLT will commence operations from the second half of this year, allowing CMA CGM and its shipping line affiliates to leverage on the port infrastructure and technologies with this latest Pasir Panjang expansion. There was no disclosed investment amount for the joint venture deal, but CPLT will be providing long-term terminal services to CMA CGM and its shipping line affiliates, both companies said. A U.S. Coast Guard International Port Security team completed a bilateral engagement with Malaysian officials in April. This engagement involved sharing best practices and visiting with the Ministry of Infrastructure Marine and Ports Division to observe the implementation of the International Ship and Port Facility Security Code at three port facilities: Northport, Port Klang and two port facilities in Penang; Swettenham Cruise Terminal and North Butterworth Container Terminal.

APM Terminals Pipavav (Gujarat Pipavav Port Ltd), one of western India’s gateway ports, today announced the commencement of the INDFEX service at Pipavav. The INDFEX ( India – Far East Express ) is run in consortium with Wanhai, K-Line, Shipping Corporation of India, Pacific International Lines ( PIL ) & Simatech, with Wan Hai deploying two vessels, and the others deploying one each. The service provides a weekly connection between the Far East and India. The first vessel m.v. WANHAI 509 berthed at Pipavav at 1048 hours / 14 March, 2016. Officials of APM Terminals Pipavav accorded a grand welcome to the vessel and her crew, captained by Capt. Ma Ke Zeng. The operations were carried out successfully, using the new Post Panamax cranes, recently installed at the port.

DP World London Gateway has welcomed one of the world’s largest container ships carrying a record 18,601-teu. The UASC-owned Al Muraykh called at DP World London Gateway to unload 3,800 containers. Al Muraykh, a new generation of ultra-large container ships, is one of the largest in the world measuring 400 metres in length. The containers are loaded 11 storeys high above deck and 23 containers across the ship. With thousands more stowed below deck, the ship can carry up to 18,800 containers. The ship left Malaysia’s Port Klang carrying more shipping containers than any vessel on record and arrived at DP World London Gateway Port as its first port of call in Europe. Many of the goods being unloaded will be on the high streets of the UK in the coming days for the January sales.
