What is the Insured’s Duty Under a Marine Insurance Policy? It Depends …

© Aerial Mike / Adobe Stock

The law governing marine insurance in the United States has long been a source of considerable confusion. And if there was once a clear set of principles applicable in such cases, the Supreme Court long ago muddied the waters with their infamous ruling in Wilburn Boat Co. v. Fireman’s Fund Ins. Co., 348 U.S. 310 (1955). That case, involving a fire on a houseboat on an inland man-made lake on the Texas-Oklahoma border, established the “litmus test” for when maritime law should…

Ship Owners Are Modifying Propellers to Meet EU MRV Requirement

Photo: Hydrex

Belgian underwater repair specialist Hydrex says it is carrying out more modifications to a ship’s underwater areas and equipment in addition to the company’s more common damage rectification work. The increase in this type of work - to propellers, in particular – follows the recent introduction of the European MRV regulation which has seen more shipowners look at ways of further reducing fuel consumption (and emissions) when operating to and from European ports. The EU MRV (Monitoring, Reporting, Verification) regulation entered into force in July 2015.

MARIN (Maritime Research Institute) tested an innovative concept for a floating mega island. The island comprises 87 large floating triangles that are flexibility connected to one another. Together they form a flexible floating island that can be as large as 1 to 5 km in cross-section. Olaf Waals, project manager and the concept developer: “As sea level rises, cities become overcrowded and more activities are carried out at sea, raising the dikes and reclaiming land from the seas are perhaps no longer an effective solution. • Building houses and recreation close to the water.

Better CFD Process with Rapid Design Space Optimization

control managed by Excel. A Design-Of-Experiments optimization for 27 variants is illustrated. The resistance prediction was by HydroComp’s “Prismatic Wave Drag” distributed volume wave-theory method. Total calculation time was less than three minutes, including development of the variant geometry in Excel, calculation via NavCad Premium, and reporting and graphing of results back in Excel.

HydroComp, Inc. of Durham, N.H. Rapid Design Space Optimization (RDSO) with HydroComp NavCad Premium allows a naval architect to focus CFD resources on high-value computations and avoid irrelevant time and expense. HydroComp NavCad provides resistance and propulsion prediction for naval architects. With the recent introduction of the Premium Edition, NavCad is now able to provide integrated support for design optimization. To ensure that process efficiency and cost-effectiveness of resource-intensive CFD calculations are as high as possible…

Flexibility Key to MES’ New FPSO Hull Platform

Japanese shipbuilder Mitsui Engineering & Shipbuilding Co., Ltd. (MES) announced it has developed a next generation hull platform for floating production, storage and offloading system (FPSO) that aims to offer improved flexibility between projects. Offshore oilfields vary in environmental conditions and oil properties relative to geographical location, requiring shipyards to frequently change hull design and construction scheme to satisfy varying requirements for each project. Though some concepts of standardized FPSO or simple generic FPSO have been proposed as possible solutions for this issue, MES said it seems essentially difficult to use a single and simple fixed design across various projects.
