Port of Rotterdam Offers 'Substantial' Port Fee Reduction to for Ships that Bunker Sustainable Fuels

STS Loading Caustic Soda in Rotterdam

The new International Maritime Organisation (IMO) regulations aim to significantly reduce emissions of sulfur oxides, which are responsible for atmospheric acidification. This means that vessels may only use fuels with sulfur levels of up to 0.5 percent as of 1 January 2020.The current permitted level is 3.5 percent. However, another option is available. Rotterdam Port Promotes VLSFO

Europe’s largest bunker port Rotterdam said that the new low-sulfur bunker oil VLSFO (Very Low Sulfur Fuel Oil with a maximum 0.5% sulfur) has become extremely popular in the port.Half of all November bunker sales were for VLSFO. This became apparent from the bunkering notifications via the Port of Rotterdam Authority’s TimeToBunker App.As of 1 January 2020, sea-going vessels on the world’s oceans may only use fuel with a sulfur content of no more than 0.5%. The current maximum is 3.5%. High-sulphur fuel will only be permitted on vessels that have scrubbers - an installed filtration system - on board.The TimeToBunker App shows that VLSFO sales have increased dramatically over the past two months: September 1,700 tonnes, October 32,000 tonnes and November 95,000 tonnes.

Rotterdam Port Joins Noah's Train

The Port of Rotterdam Authority has announced that it has participated in ‘Noah’s Train’ as part of the Rail Freight Forward (RFF) initiative, a collaborative effort to cut freight transport emissions by 30% by 2030.The longest mobile work of art and ambassador of the RFF initiative, Noah’s Train, is an initiative launched by several European railway companies to promote freight transport by rail. Brexit Brings Jobs to Rotterdam Port

Europe's largest port, Rotterdam, said that  eleven British firms set up in Rotterdam in anticipation of Brexit last year.According to Rotterdam Partners these British firms represent nearly a third of the international firms that established a location in the port city last year.The new arrivals include companies like Cogoport, Webhelp, Airlift Systems and GE Healthcare. Together, these 36 international players will be creating over 1,430 new jobs and making a combined investment of EUR 199 million in the port city’s economy.These international firms were attracted by Rotterdam Partners, which bears responsibility for Rotterdam’s city…

Gulf Petrochem Sets Up Russian & Baltic Trading Desk

Gulf Petrochem Group (GP) has further strengthened its European bunkering division by establishing a Russian and Baltic trading desk within the Rotterdam office. Boris Kuftyrev has been appointed to manage this desk overseen by Chris Todd in Europe’s largest bunkering port, Rotterdam. Kuftyrev has in-depth knowledge and experience having previously held the position of head of sales at Gazpromneft Marine Bunker ltd. He joins GP’s ever expanding back-to-back bunker team and will specifically look to develop the group’s presence in the Russian and Baltic region.

Rotterdam Port Back to Growth

After two consecutive years of negative volume growth, Europe’s busiest box port Rotterdam was back on the growth trail in 2014, as container throughput grew 5.8% to 12.3m teu. The different market sectors performed quite dissimilar. The break-bulk, with 12.1% growth, did exceptionally well. Oil products fell the most, by 8.1%. An extra 4.8% of crude oil passed through the port. Dry bulk fell by 0.7%. In Toto, in 2014, the throughput in the port of Rotterdam went up 1% to 445 million tonnes compared to the previous year. "In 2015 we expect the same growth in throughput as last year at 1 percent," Allard Castelein, CEO of the Port of Rotterdam Authority, said in a press release.

G6 Alliance Announces Port Rotations

Members of the G6 Alliance  released details on port rotations for the proposed service expansion to the Asia-North America West Coast and Trans-Atlantic trade lanes, announced in early December last year. Subject to the completion of regulatory review process, the 17 services are scheduled to start in the second quarter of 2014. “The G6 Alliance monitors market developments closely and is continuously seeking opportunities to improve our service offerings,” member carriers said in a statement. “With the introduction of the Asia – North America West Coast and Trans-Atlantic services, the G6 Alliance will further strengthen its position to meet shippers’ demand for more comprehensive, seamless and efficient services with competitive transit times.

North Sea Ship Collision: 4 Dead 8 Missing

MOL's RoRo 'Baltic Ace' sinks in shallow water after colliding with container ship 'Corvus J' off the coast of Holland. The 148-metre (485-foot) car carrier Baltic Ace, sailing under the Bahamas flag, carrying cars from Zeebrugge in Belgium to Kotka in Finland, took water after the collision and the 24 crew took to the liferafts, reports BBC News. Several helicopters and two navy patrol ships continue searching for the missing sailors. The 134-meter Corvus J was badly damaged but reportedly not in danger of sinking, with all 12 crew members still on board.

Jumbo Jubilee Maiden Voyage

Jumbo Shipping’s latest newbuild, HLV Jumbo Jubilee, completed its maiden voyage after successfully loading, transporting and installing two 1250 t shiploaders for FL Smidth in challenging circumstances. The Jumbo Jubilee started her first voyage from her home port Rotterdam, The Netherlands. She set sail for Vitória, Brazil, where two shiploaders were waiting, each with a processing capacity of 16,000 t iron ore per hour. With ample clearance between crane jib and cargo and enough lifting height to clear the conveyor belt at the centre of the pier, the loading operation was relatively easy.
