Crowley Maritime Corporation has entered into strategic partnership agreement with South Korean-based green technology developer Panasia Co., Ltd. for ballast water treatment systems to be installed during retrofitting of its ATB fleet. The agreement also includes technical services, engineering, integration, commissioning, training, scheduled delivery and spare parts. Panasia GloEn-Patrol treatment system utilizes a filter to remove 50 micron or larger size organisms and medium-pressure UV lamps to disinfect smaller organisms.

Cargotec’s Kalmar business area is strengthening its global presence in the ship to shore (STS) cranes market by commencing STS production and engineering in Asia. Until now, Kalmar’s STS cranes have only been offered to the European market. Jorma Tirkkonen, President, Kalmar Container Crane System Division, Cargotec said “Our customers have asked us to consider delivering STS cranes to terminals outside Europe. We decided that now it is a good time to target increased volumes by starting to offer our STS cranes in all continents. Wärtsilä signed a cooperation agreement for the 24/7 global spare parts transportation management and control tower services for Wärtsilä Services. For CEVA, the contract value is approximately EUR 32 million per annum over the next 3 years. The agreement follows Wärtsilä's earlier announcement of its intention to centralize spare parts logistics and to build a facility in the . The new operating model is planned to be fully implemented by 2011. CEVA Logistics will take responsibility for shipments of spare parts to Wärtsilä's various warehousing facilities in and for the spare parts deliveries to Wärtsilä's international customers.

Friede Goldman Halter, Inc., (FGH) vessel construction business unit, Halter Marine, has been informed by the offices of Senator Trent Lott (R-MS) and Senator Thad Cochran (R-MS) that it has been awarded a contract by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) of the U.S. Department of Commerce for the detailed design and construction of the first of four Fisheries Research Vessels- designated the FRV-40 class. The contract also includes the provisions of spare parts, technical services and options to built three additional ships. The total value of the base contract is $38.3 million, if all possible options are exercised, the value of the contract could ultimately exceed $165 million.

Wärtsilä will acquire the assets of the German DEUTZ AG's medium and large marine engine service business. The acquisition price is EUR 115 million. The deal is earnings enhancing for Wärtsilä in 2005. The business consists of original spare parts sales, repair and maintenance for DEUTZ medium and large marine diesel engines. This deal will increase the installed engine base for Wärtsilä Service by 12,500 MW or by 9%. Today Wärtsilä's installed engine base is 130,000 MW. Halter Marine, Inc., the vessels segment of Friede Goldman Halter, Inc., has been awarded a contract from the U.S. Army Tank and Automotive Command (TACOM) for the detailed design and construction of a Logistic Support Vessel (LSV). The contract includes provisions for spare parts, technical services, and options to build two additional LSVs. The total value of the base contract is $26.9 million, and could be worth upwards of $78 million once the options are exercised. Engineering and construction at the Company's Halter Moss Point shipyard in Escatawpa, MS are scheduled to take about two years to complete. This project is expected to create approximately 75 new jobs at that yard. The 313-ft. (95.4 m) LSV class vessels will have a beam of 60 ft. (18.2 m) and a molded depth of 19 ft.

The U.S. Gulf of Mexico region is again poised to prosper, spurred by the buzz of activity surrounding the oil patch, and specifically the renewed vigor with which companies will explore and develop deepwater fields for the production of natural resources. Though the resumption of business at "full throttle" has taken perhaps a bit longer than many observers would have initially predicted, particularly given the continued high price of oil and gas and the "pro" oil industry political team occupying the White House, it is a safe bet that, at least for the next several years, the offshore oil business will ensure that the marine business in the GOM region is a prosperous one.
