New Commercial Shipping Radar from Kelvin Hughes

Kelvin Hughes has announced the launch of a new range of radar systems for commercial shipping based on its innovative, solid-state SharpEye technology. Kelvin Hughes has been supplying IMO type-approved radar to merchant ships, fishing boats and workboats since the 1940s, delivering reliability and low cost of ownership together with highly superior detection capability. SharpEye, with its Doppler processing of the radar returns, has taken situational awareness to a new level with its ability to detect more targets, at longer ranges, than conventional, magnetron-based radar systems.

Expanded Kelvin Hughes Product Range on Display

Kelvin Hughes is launching and demonstrating a host of new products and services at SMM 2014, including a port security radar system, specialist mission radome radar and displays, Voyage Data Recorders and the latest version of ChartCo PassageManager software. Co-exhibiting with Lammers Schiffselektronik GmbH who represent Kelvin Hughes in Germany for radar and navigation equipment sales and service. This is the biggest and broadest set of new products and offerings that Kelvin Hughes has ever brought to SMM, the company said.

World’s Fastest Ferry Using SharpEye Radar

Kelvin Hughes, a designer and supplier of navigation and surveillance systems, announced that its SharpEye radar is now in continuous use on the world’s fastest ferry, operating between Argentina and Uruguay. Launched in Oct 2013 by the President of Argentina, Christina Fernandez de Kirchner, and operated by Buquebus of Uruguay, the ferry, named Francisco after the Argentinian-born Pope Francis, carries up to 1024 passengers and crew together with 150 cars on a daily basis between Buenos Aires and Montevideo.

Safe Ships, Safer Seas 2011: Kelvin Hughes’ Athens seminar tackles piracy issues head-on. Thursday 20 October 2011 saw world-leading navigational systems provider Kelvin Hughes present the first in its series of  ‘Safe Ships, Safer Seas’ seminars to an audience in Athens consisting of 100 Greek ship owners, operators and senior executives. Held at the Apollon Divani Spa Hotel, Vouliagmeni, the event went ahead despite national strike action across Greece and was well attended, with a keynote address by George D. Gourdomichalis, President and MD of G.

SharpEye Radar Improves Pirate Detection

The value of being able to detect small vessels approaching in any weather conditions, and automatically identify potentially hostile behaviour, is highlighted by a report of piracy in 2011’s first edition of ‘Maritime Feedback’ (issue 28), a newsletter from Confidential Hazardous Incident Reporting Programme (CHIRP). “Thick low clouds and rain may provide a hiding place for pirate craft,” warns a CHIRP report about an incident in the South China Sea. While passing the Anamabas Archipeligo in the middle of the night, an officer of the watch noticed two small unidentified targets on the radar, and thick low clouds forming and developing in their direction. The targets became lost in rain clutter.

Kelvin Hughes Launched ETD for Radar

Kelvin Hughes has recently launched "Enhanced Target Detection" (ETD) as an enhancement to its MantaDigital range of wide-screen radars. This new facility enhances the display of slow-moving or stationary targets without interfering with the normal radar appearance or operation. ETD, the latest innovation in the MantaDigital range provided by Kelvin Hughes, treats stationary and moving returns differently, highlighting the moving ones by displaying them in a different color. "We are harnessing modern signal and image processing techniques to give the navigator better information,”said Spike Hughes, Director of Sales and Marketing at Kelvin Hughes.
