The Philippine coast guard inspected a North Korean cargo vessel that docked at a port northwest of Manila in one of the first such checks since the U.N. Security Council imposed further sanctions on Pyongyang over its nuclear program, reports AP. The 6,830 dwt general cargo ship Jin Teng is among 31 vessels that could be forced to stop trading after being included in an asset freeze against a North Korean shipping company under the tightened sanctions passed unanimously by the Security Council. The registered owner is Golden Soar Development, which has an address in Hong Kong's Tsim Sha Tsui tourist district, according to the Equasis shipping database hosted by the French transport ministry, although there was no telephone listing for the company.

The first Ro-Pax cruiser designed and built in China for the Chinese market has entered into service on January 1, 2015. The ship, named San sha No. 1, can carry wheeled cargo, containers, trailers as well as passengers, and was delivered to China's southernmost city Sansha in Hainan Province to tackle the city's lack of transportation capacity. The vessel is a conventional propulsion Ro-Ro Passenger vessel designed to transport vehicle and containers on a single cargo deck in compliance with Chinese Classification Society Rules and Chinese Flag regulations.

Chairman Mario Cordero announced that the Federal Maritime Commission has completed compromise agreements recovering a total of $503,000 in civil penalties. The agreements were reached with five non-vessel-operating common carriers (NVOCCs), two unlicensed transport businesses and one vessel-operating common carrier. The agreed penalties resulted from investigations conducted by the Commission’s Area Representatives in Miami and Los Angeles, and Washington D.C. headquarters staff.

China Merchants Energy Shipping Co. Ltd. (SHA 601872) said orders for six oil tankers have been approved by the National Development and Reform Commission (NDRC). In April, the company said it plans to buy two very large crude carriers (VLCC) displacing 300,000 deadweight tons and two tankers displacing 110,000 dwt from Dalian Shipbuilding Industry Co. Ltd. for $343m. In June, the company signed a $232m order with Dalian Shipbuilding to buy two VLCCs displacing 300,000 deadweight tons. Austal and New World First Ferry Services (Macau) Limited (First Ferry (Macau)) ordered two new high-speed catamarans for operation between Macau and Tsim Sha Tsui, Hong Kong. With five Austal 155.8-ft. high speed passenger catamarans already in service, the new ferries will be almost identical to the original design. The ferries are said to be optimized for service speeds in excess of 42 knots and the comfortable carriage of 418 passengers with numerous passenger amenities. The new ferries are scheduled to enter service in 2008 to meet the growing tourism demand generated from the remarkable increase in the Macau's tourist arrivals since the development of the gaming and mega-resort industry and the extension of Individual Visitor Scheme.
