US Navy Awards Maintenance Contracts

The Pentagon last Friday announced that nine companies have been awarded contracts for repair, maintenance and modernization of U.S. Navy’s non-nuclear surface ships homeported or visiting the Northwest United States.The total value of the multiple award contract is a combined $944 million. Scorpio Bulkers to Exit Dry Bulk Sector in 2021 to Focus on Offshore Wind Vessels

Following a string of bulk carrier vessel sales and a plan to order an offshore wind installation vessel, dry bulk carrier operator Scorpio Bulkers on Sunday said its Board of Directors had authorized the company, as part of its transition to a sustainable future, to sell its remaining dry bulk vessels and exit the dry bulk sector during 2021. Ocean Network Express Unveils AOCTEL

Ocean Network Express (ONE), a Japanese container shipping company that is headquartered in Tokyo and Singapore, has announced the establishment of the Advanced Ocean Container Transportation Engineering Lab (AOCTEL), a stowage planning hub in Kumamoto, Japan.The office was founded by Kozo Keikaku Engineering Inc (KKE) for Nippon Yusen Kabushiki Kaisha five years ago. NYK Celebrates O3 Challenge

The “Ocean of Opportunities Challenge”  (O3 Challenge), a worldwide contest aimed at creating new value through open innovation in the maritime industry, has been successfully celebrated by NYK Group.This was the second consecutive year for the challenge, which is planned and conducted by NYK Group companies Symphony Creative Solutions Pte. NYK Group Celebrates Successful O3 Challenge

MARAD Awards More Than $20 Mln to Small US Shipyards

More than $20 million in grant funding has been awarded to support capital improvement projects at 29 small shipyards in 22 states across the U.S.The funding, awarded through the U.S. Department of Transportation’s Maritime Administration (MARAD) Small Shipyard Grant Program, supports capital improvements that foster increased efficiency and economic growth.“These grants are an investment in our country’s small shipyards and will help create good jobs for America’s workers,” said U.S. Transportation Secretary Elaine L.

Cable Laying Software, MakaiLay commissioned

In the last few months, the submarine cable industry’s #1 cable installation software, MakaiLay, has been commissioned on four cable laying vessels around the world. KT Submarine (KTS, Korea) recently completed a challenging installation with one of their cable laying vessels, Segero. They also commissioned the software on their other vessel, the Responder, and are currently using it to manage a cable installation in the Pacific. “To provide more accurate cable installation services to our client, we started using MakaiLay in our most recent cable lays, and we are impressed with its capabilities,” said Mr. Moon, Engineer-In-Charge, KT Submarine.

OMEGA Engineering Relocates its Headquarters

Fifty years ago, OMEGA Engineering, Inc. was a small privately held company that was woman owned and operated. Today it's a global manufacturer and supplier of process measurement and control products, operating out of brand new world headquarters. The move to the high-tech facility in Norwalk, Conn., represents a major transition for the firm, which for five decades had been headquartered in Stamford, Conn. The move coincides with the recent appointment of Joe Vorih as President. These developments are ushering in a new era for the firm—an era that's deeply rooted in OMEGA's history. OMEGA Engineering founder Betty Ruth Hollander, a mother of four children, started the firm at her kitchen table in 1962.

In 2014, Forbes Associate Director for Maritime Services at Control Risks stated that maritime risks are on the rise. Mariners and ship owner/operators experienced a 26% spike in maritime piracy and armed robbery since 2014  and the North Sea Oil Industry admitted that it had been targeted and thwarted cyber attacks, attacks that if successful could have caused untold financial and logistical damage. •    Within the last decade, plans to attack a cruise ship in a major U.S. port were revealed. Maritime surveillance systems play a key role monitoring sea lanes and ports while supporting worldwide maritime safety and security. The ability to operate effectively and securely in any environment (air, land or sea) depends on an acute awareness and understanding of the surrounding elements.

NYK Gets Japan's First LNG-Fuelled Tug

NYK Line has taken delivery of Japan’s first liquefied natural gas (LNG)-fueled tugboat from Keihin Dock. "The new tug, named Sakigake, was delivered by Keihin Dock Co. Ltd and is expected confirm the viability of LNG as a marine fuel and to help cultivate a new business field in the area of LNG as an environment-friendly marine fuel,” says NYK. Sakigake has been chartered to Wing Maritime Service Corporation from NYK, and will be operated mainly at the ports of Yokohama and Kawasaki. This vessel is the second environment-friendly tugboat operated by Wing Maritime Service Corporation, following the delivery of Tsubasa in March 2013. The new tug is equipped with dual-fuel engines that can use either of LNG and diesel oil, depending on conditions.

Allen Naugle Joins HMS Global Maritime

HMS Global Maritime welcomed Allen Naugle as the Director of Safety, Quality and Environment as of December 1, 2014. He will be headquartered in the HMS Global Maritime Corporate office in New Albany, IN. Allen brings 28 years of engineering and leadership experience to the team, including 21 years serving as a United States Air Force Officer. Prior to his position with HMS Global Maritime, Allen was Director of Operations for TEAM Integrated Engineering, Inc., managing on-site environmental compliance, pollution prevention, hazardous materials/waste management, and environmental security support to multiple U.S. Air Force bases as well as management of several branches, staff and budgets. NYK Opens New Planning Center in Kumamoto

On September 1, 2014, NYK and Kozo Keikaku Engineering Inc. established a stowage planning center for container shipping at the Kumamoto office of Kozo Keikaku Engineering Inc. in Ozu town, Kumamoto prefecture, Japan. The task of container stowage planning will be transferred from NYK’s office in Singapore by the end of March 2015. Eastern Shipbuilding Get GLDD Dredger/Tug ATB Contract

Eastern Shipbuilding inform that Great Lakes Dredge & Dock Company, LLC (GLDD) has placed orders for construction of a 433’ Trailing Suction Hopper Dredge Barge and a 158’-4” 15,600 BHP, CPP Tug. Named the GLDD302 (ESG Hull 252), the ATB Tug detailed engineering is being performed by Ship’s Architect, Inc. and the GLDD151 (ESG Hull 253), the ATB Dredge Barge by Bay Engineering, Inc. Both are  based upon an Ocean Tug & Barge Engineering, Inc. ATB design. This Trailing Suction Hopper Dredge, Articulated Tug and Barge (ATB) Unit, will be delivered in 2016.

Distortion Control "Tool Box" for Lightweight Ship Structures Workshop

This project compiles the physics and principles associated with distortion control derived from previous research and converts this knowledge base into a sequenced set of tangible, “shipyard friendly” implementation solutions designed to optimize several shipyard models. Distortion control modules will be designed and implemented to reduce the production rework associated with construction of lightweight ship structures. These modules will address the major sources of distortion, to include the welding and material handling processes. This project raises the technology readiness level of distortion control techniques to enable shipyard implementation.
