Tug Crewman Medevaced Off US East Coast

An ailing crew member was medevaced from a tugboat 16 miles east of Brunswick, Ga., the U.S. Coast Guard said.Another crew member aboard the Captain Sam notified Coast Guard Sector Charleston watchstanders at 7 p.m. on Saturday, via VHF-FM channel 16 that the man was experiencing abdominal pain.A Coast Guard Station Brunswick 45-foot Response Boat—Medium boat crew transferred the 62-year-old man to awaiting emergency medical services at Morning Star Marina.EMS transported the man to Southeast Georgia Medical Center for further medical care."Our boat crew was able to disembark the crew member safely," said Seaman Gianna Calderone, a Coast Guard Station Brunswick boat crew member.

Ailing Mariner Medevaced from Car Carrier off Georgia

An ailing crew member was medevaced from the car carrier Morning Capo approximately 12 miles east of Brunswick, Ga., the U.S. Coast Guard said.Marine Safety Unit Savannah watchstanders relayed a message from a Morning Capo crew member to Coast Guard Sector Charleston watchstanders at 2:27 a.m. via landline that a 35-year-old-man male crew member aboard was experiencing severe abdominal pain.A Coast Guard Station Brunswick 45-foot Response Boat—Medium boat crew arrived on scene at 6:20 a.m. and transferred the man to awaiting EMS at Station Brunswick."The Morning Capo crew members good communications on VHF-FM Channel 16 helped our crew position the RBM to a safe location to transfer the man," said Petty Officer 2nd Class William Butler, a crewmember on the case.

nexAir Further Expands Its Southeast US Footprint

Distributor of atmospheric gases and welding supplies, Memphis-based nexAir LLC, announced its merger with 23 Praxair Distribution Southeast, LLC (PDSE) branches located in Florida and southeast Georgia and the acquisition of two Praxair Distribution, Inc. (PDI) branches in eastern Georgia. The transaction closed on December 31, 2015, and nexAir assumed operations of the 25 branches as of January 4, 2016. PDSE was formed in 1997 as the result of a joint venture between PDI and the George W. Fowler Company, a long time industrial gas distributor in Florida owned by the William B. Porter family. The family will take an ownership interest in nexAir with the closing of this transaction. PDSE will become a wholly-owned subsidiary of nexAir.

Kings Bay Receives Highest OSHA Safety Rating

The Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) presented its highest rating for worker safety programs to Naval Submarine Base (NSB) Kings Bay during an all hands presentation held at the southeast Georgia submarine base April 19. Kings Bay received Star status -- the highest level a business entity can achieve in the Voluntary Protection Program (VPP). The strategic submarine base joins 1,600 other organizations in the United States who have achieved this status. According to OSHA, Kings Bay is the first Navy operational base to achieve this milestone; Naval Sea Systems Command shipyards in Puget Sound and Norfolk previously had been recognized in 2006 for their programs. OSHA area director for Savannah, John Deifer, stated the base is a model installation for others to follow.

Captain and Crew of the Stena Timer Recognized by NMFS

Captain Don Lewis of The National Marine Fisheries Service (NMFS) yesterday presented a Certificate of Appreciation to Captain Andrew Bielecki and the crew of the Stena Timer for their efforts and ship management practices during the 2001 northern right whale calving season. The Stena Timer is under charter to Crowley Liner Services and is deployed in the company's Bahamas service. Off the coast of Florida, the calving season lasts from December through the end of March. Warning System (EWS) and authorities from the states of Florida and Georgia monitor the calving area in small planes. The sighting information is passed on to ships passing through the area in an effort to prevent collisions between the ships and the whales.
