IBM, Maersk in Blockchain Tie-up for Shipping Industry

IBM and Danish transport company Maersk said they were working together to digitize, manage, and track shipping transactions using blockchain technology. The technology, which powers the digital currency bitcoin, enables data sharing across a network of individual computers. It has gained worldwide popularity due to its usefulness in recording and keeping track of assets or transactions across all industries. Danelec ECDIS Products Receive Type Approval

DNV GL has awarded a type approval certificate with EU Wheelmark for Danelec Marine DM700 and DM800 G2 ECDIS models. The type approval signifies that the products meet all applicable technical requirements, including the new IEC 61174 Ed. 4, IHO-52 and IHO S-64 performance standards. “We are offering an easy pathway for shipowners to be in full compliance with the new ECDIS standards when they enter into force in August,” said Hans Ottosen, CEO of Danelec Marine. “All new Danelec Marine DM700 and DM800 G2 ECDIS models meet the new standard, and we are providing free upgrades for installed legacy DM800 ECDIS products. New Danelec ECDIS Includes UK AIO Service

The United Kingdom Hydrographic Office (UKHO) ADMIRALTY Information Overlay (AIO) is now available on Danelec Marine DM800 G2 Electronic Chart Display and Information Systems (ECDIS). AIO allows subscribers using the ADMIRALTY Vector Chart Service (AVCS) to view the latest temporary and preliminary notices to mariners as overlays on the ECDIS screen, as an aid to route planning and navigation. The AIO is displayed as a single layer on top of the basic Electronic Navigation Chart display. “AIO helps bridge crews identify areas of possible uncertainty and risk at the crucial planning stage,” said Thomas Mellor, UKHO head of OEM technical support and digital standards.

Danelec Marine Making Free ECDIS Upgrades

Danelec Marine has launched a program to provide free upgrades of shipboard Electronic Chart Display and Information Systems (ECDIS) to the latest technology meeting new ECDIS standards. The Danish marine electronics company is currently replacing the first-generation Danelec DM800 ECDIS products with new DM800 ECDIS G2 hardware and V2 software. The Danelec DM800 ECDIS G2 platform has been designed to enable the ship’s crew to upgrade to the V3 software, which will be fully compliant with the new IEC61174 Ed. 4, IHO 52 and IHO 64 standards. Danelec Marine also offers a free-of-charge update training for navigators already holding a type-specific certificate on previous versions of DM800 ECDIS.

Danelec Debuts New ECDIS Platform at Nor-Shipping

Danelec Marine announced the introduction of its new Electronic Chart Display and Information System (ECDIS) platform for marine navigation, shown for the first time at the Nor-Shipping 2015 maritime trade fair in Oslo, Norway, this week. Danelec said its new ECDIS platform incorporates new Linux-based application software, an intuitive easy-to-learn user interface, industry-leading cartography solutions, ruggedized low-power LED display monitors and Danelec’s exclusive SoftWare Advanced Protection (SWAP) technology for shipboard service. The new system is designed around a custom-built computer running on Linux, which is more stable, robust and secure than Windows-based PCs. The computer has been designed, tested and built for the marine environment.

Imtech Marine Unveils Entertainment System

Imtech Marine has developed an IPTV-based crew entertainment solution for the offshore and merchant marine market. IPTV offers interactive multimedia services such as television, video, audio, text and graphics delivered over IP based networks. The RH IPTV system allows the crew to put the job aside and relax just as they would in their own living room; watch television, play a movie or listen to their favorite music. The systems consists of SAT TV streamers that convert satellite TV broadcasts into an IP format and an RH IPTV server which provides all streaming Video on Demand and Music on Demand content from its hard discs. Users can access the system from their TV screen, which is connected to a Linux-powered set-top box.

ESRG Releases OstiaEdge Monitoring

Each ship will be fitted with 4500 detectors and 1000 Control & Indication interface units for doors, fire dampers, low location lights, sprinkler valves and other systems. In addition, three Autromaster 5000 Color Graphic Indication and Control System units will be installed to control each ship's Fire Detection System. and smoke concentration to high voltage lines. all cruise ships should install local buzzers in all cabins. after 90 seconds, allowing the public address system to be heard. need for extra cabling, which drastically reduces the cost of installing this important safety measure.

KMSS Wins Contract for Fire Detection Systems

to supply Fire Detection Systems to four Radiance Class ships run by Royal Caribbean Cruises Limited (RCCL), out of the Meyer Weft shipyard in Papenburg, Germany. The four ship deal will see KMSS installing its Autrosafe Fire Detection System with Self Verifying Detectors on the currently sailing ‘M/S Radiance of the Seas’ and the M/S Brilliance of the Seas, which is due to leave the yard imminently. In addition, KMSS will also supply the same systems to two more Radiance Class ships currently in production, to be launched next year in 2004. Norsk Hydro Begins Exploration Using SGI Technology

Norsk Hydro ASA selected SGItechnology to expand its national and international oil exploration efforts as well as for a number of research projects. To perform seismic acoustic tomography and migration velocity analysis to determine optimal oil well drilling sites, Norsk Hydro's facility in Bergen, Norway, selected a large, shared-memory SGI Altix system. For its research center in the port city of Porsgrunn, Norsk Hydro acquired an SGI Altix for computational fluid dynamics applications and a Silicon Graphics Prism visualization system. Norsk Hydro's research center in Bergen is developing and testing different methods of imaging and working on a large variety of technical services for oil and gas production.

SHI Develops RTLinux Powered Robots

FSMLabs, a software developer announced that Samsung Heavy Industries Shipbuilding Division (SHI) has selected RTLinuxPro as the base for its robotics systems and has several advanced RTLinux powered robots in production use. Working with FSMLabs' Korean partner, RealTimeWave, engineers at SHI have created some of the worlds most advanced ship-building robots including an autonomous “Spider” welder that autonomously guides itself over the ships membrane wall. In addition to the Spider robot, SHI has developed a RTLinux powered pipe alignment robot also in production use and a third, Stewart-Gough Type 6-axes parallel robot is under development. The robots use SHI designed 3-D path tracking and real-time attitude control systems.
