Paper to Electrons: CBP Makes a Big Move

The U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CPB) announced December 28 that it was moving to an all-electronic filing method for Form I-418 “Passenger List – Crew List.” I-418 is required from the “master or agent of every commercial vessel arriving in the United States” (emphasis added). Now that’s a change at scale. The Form I-418 process also has a Coast Guard component, tracking everyone entering and leaving U.S. maritime ports.CPB’s change is an “interim final rule”, and the agency is seeking public comments – due February 28 – on whether the change is a good idea.

Chinese Shipments Held for Extra Customs Checks in India

Donnelly Elected as FFABA Tanker Chairman

Pat Donnelly, of Braemar ACM-GFI, has been elected as Chairman of the Tanker FFA Brokers Association. He replaces Ben Courtney of ICAP Energy who has chaired the group, which represents the worldwide community of tanker Forward Freight Agreement (FFA) brokers, since 2016. Founded in 1997, the FFABA is the worldwide association for Forward Freight Agreement broking firms. Working with the Baltic Exchange, the FFABA organises educational workshops and industry forums in major shipping centres, with the aim of promoting FFAs as an important tool for managing exposure to freight rates.

Port of New Orleans Riding High

The Port of New Orleans has surpassed the half-million mark for twenty-foot-equivalent units (TEU) handled in a 12-month period for the first time, announced Port President and CEO Gary LaGrange during the 29th Annual State of the Port Address hosted today by the International Freight Forwarders and Customs House Brokers Association of New Orleans. “It’s another milestone that comes on the heels of four record years in a row,” LaGrange said. The most recent 12-month container data through September found the port handled 537,285 TEUs, a 13.6 percent increase over the same period one-year ago.
