CMA CGM profits up 43%

French container line operator CMA CGM has announced that its 2014 net consolidated profits rose by 43% over the previous year to USD584 million thanks to a growth in volume and significantly reduced costs. Consolidated operating revenue for the company increased by 5.3% in 2014, compared with the previous year, to $16.7bn on an 8.1% volume increase to 12.2m teu, which CMA CGM said was mainly attributable to east-west gains. Sri Lanka Port Project: China Merchants, CHEC Invest $601-M

Two of China's largest port operators and engineering firms have agreed to invest in a $601 million terminal in Sri Lanka's Hambantota port, part of a series of deals signed during a visit by President Xi Jinping to the island nation. Keen to establish its presence in the Indian Ocean, China has spent millions of dollars building ports and roads across the region in a strategy dubbed the String of Pearls. China Merchants Holdings said in a statement late on Tuesday that it and China Harbour Engineering Company (CHEC), a subsidiary of China Communications Construction Group , had entered a joint venture with the Sri Lanka Ports Authority to develop and operate a container terminal for the Hambantota Port Development.

Desert Ports for Ocean Carriers: New Analysis

ICTSI’s announcement earlier this month that it is investing over $130m in a long term deal with Iraq’s Port Authority to operate and enhance container handling capacity at Umm Qasr illustrates the opportunities ahead for ocean carriers, says Drewry's 'Container Insight Weekly'. Investment by major terminal operators in Umm Qasr shows growing confidence in Iraq’s container growth potential, whilst sanctions continue to bite in neighbouring Iran. Iraq’s sole container port already saw volumes jump by more than 65% in 2013, up to 570,000 teu. Admittedly this is from a relatively low base but it remains impressive growth and suggests that the country’s cargo base is expanding from military cargoes and construction materials to consumer goods and manufactured items.

Kongsberg Launches DPS for Workboat Market

Last month Kongsberg Marine launched the Compact DP Series from Kongsberg Maritime. A solution for the smaller vessel and operator, it offers a complete DP class 1 solution for dynamically positioned vessels and is designed to meet the requirements of Offshore Service Vessels and workboats. The system consists of two main components, the cPos and cJoy, both of which use Kongsberg RCU technology, within the (cPos or cJoy) Compact Controller. This forms the heart of the system and is scalable to fit any DP class 1 system. The controller's main function is to implement DP and joystick control algorithms, take actions as to operator commands and the information collected and processing from the various sensors in the DP system.

Creating a Portable Dynamic Positioning System

Imagine being able to take something as a simple as a barge, and convert it into a highly sophisticated dynamically positioned vessel. Now, imagine this conversion being done dockside, in the water, in a week's time. Thrustmaster's deck-mounted Portable Dynamic Positioning System (PDPS) eliminates the need for dry-docking, structural changes to the vessel, and only takes a minimal amount of deck space, so a vessel can be ready to go with a minimal amount of down time. The Arctic Discoverer was the first vessel on which a Thrustmaster portable DP system was installed in 1988, and the Thrustmaster 4 x 500-hp portable DP system was used by Nippon Salvage on its 270 x 85 x 17-ft. (82.2 x 25.9 x 5.1-m) deck barge, which has been outfitted for reel pipelay.
