Underwater Fire - Exploring Submarine Volcanoes

Most of Earth’s volcanoes are in the oceans, yet scientists know very little about them compared to volcanoes on land. Schmidt Ocean Institute’s research vessel Falkor recently completed a 41-day expedition near Tonga, using cutting-edge technology to map, view, and sample underwater volcanoes while sharing observations with the public using real-time video streaming and chat programs. Findings include detecting widespread evidence of deep sea explosive volcanism, observing one of the rarest volcanic rock types on Earth, exploring the largest known dacite lava flow on our planet, and discovering three new hydrothermal venting sites.

Dynaligner Aims to Eliminate Shaft Misalignment

Dynaligner

More than 20 percent of all machinery claims, as well as catastrophic failure, off-hire and repair costs are caused by misalignment – the cause of almost all propulsion train damages Sweden’s Dynaligner AB said, adding that the problem is getting worse as modern ship design pushes the envelope. However, a Swedish and Dutch invention aims to eliminate misalignment, modernizing today’s shaft alignment practice. The device, the Dynaligner, is said to offer troublefree operation of marine propulsion trains, irrespective of ship operation condition or hull deflections, etc.

U.S. Company To Assist Russian Sub

Russia signed a deal with an American company - the Norwegian arm of Halliburton -- to recover at least some of the bodies of the 118 sailors who died when the submarine sank to the bottom of the Arctic ocean in August. The Rubin design bureau, which designed the nuclear-powered Kursk, signed a contract with Halliburton to provide what is essentially logistical support for an operation to be carried out by Russian deep-sea divers. But the logistical and technical difficulties of the operation, which will begin in just over two weeks, mean that perhaps as few as 30 or 35 bodies may be recovered, at least until the entire vessel is raised next year.

Russian Research Vessel Looks For Answers In Kursk Saga

A Russian research vessel was on its way to the site where Russia's nuclear submarine Kursk sank last month to investigate the extent of the damage, naval officials were quoted as saying on Saturday. Itar-Tass news agency quoted the Northern Fleet, as saying the Mstislav Keldysh, which once filmed the wreck of the Titanic, would refuel on the Arctic coast near Murmansk and sail to the spot in the Barents Sea where the nuclear-powered Kursk plunged to the bottom. The ship has two deep-water submersibles. It would film the wreck as part of preparations to recover the remains of the Kursk's 118 crew. The Kursk sank with all crew onboard on August 12 and is lying 354 ft. (108 m) below the surface. Russia has said the Kursk sank after a collision with a foreign vessel.
