Russia Starts Operation to Lay Undersea Fiber Optic Cable through Arctic

Piriou Designs New Cable Layer

French shipbuilder and marine engineering firm Piriou has designed a new cable layer vessel, to be used to lay and repair both fiber-optical and energy cables. Nexans to Supply Cables for Marjan Field

The global player in the cable and optical fiber industry Nexans S.A. was awarded a significant Purchase Order to supply 180 km of 230 kV cables for the offshore Marjan increment development mega-project on the eastern coast of the Arabian Gulf.Discovered in 1967, the Marjan field is one of the oldest and biggest offshore oil and gas fields in the Arabian Gulf. Nexans Designs Power Umbilicals for OneSubsea

OneSubsea, the subsea technologies, production and processing systems division of Schlumberger, has contracted Nexans to design and supply two 120-km (75-mi) power umbilicals for a subsea multiphase compression system at Norske Shell’s Ormen Lange gas field in the Norwegian Sea.The French player in the cable and optical fiber industry said that the system will help extend the production life of the Ormen Lange field, Norway’s second-largest gas field that currently supplies 20 percent of the UK’s gas needs.Located in the Norwegian Sea, the Ormen Lange gas field produces about 70 million cubic meters of gas a day that is piped to the onshore Nyhamna processing plant.

Downhole sensing technology specialist, Well-SENSE, has launched a miniature optical pressure-temperature gauge, as part of its FiberLine Intervention (FLI) system.The Well-SENSE optical gauge widens the well surveillance application envelope for FLI, both on and offshore, and offers operators a low-cost and disposable alternative to both permanent downhole sensors and more traditional electronic logging devices.Combined with FLI’s other features and benefits, including a simple deployment mechanism and distributed sensing, it can deliver savings in the region of 50-90% compared to conventional logging methods.The fiber Bragg grating based device is a robust optical gauge with no electronics, batteries, external connections or power supply required.

Prysmian Opens Plant in Romania

Prysmian announced the opening of a new plant for the production of optical fiber cable in Slatina, Romania. The Slatina factory celebrates its 40th anniversary this year, having started its manufacturing activity in 1973 with production of energy cables, while in 2009 it introduced the first module for the production of optical fiber cables. The factory boasts a number of quality certifications such as ISO 9001, ISO 14001 and IMQ, and the new plant will triple its production, from 500,000 kilometers up to 1.5 million kilometres of cables per year, with the potential of reaching 3 million. The Slatina plant stretches across almost 100.000 square meters, with a covered area of around 42,000 square meters.

Trelleborg Patent Pending for Fender Load-Monitoring Systems

Trelleborg Marine Systems, a manufacturer of docking, mooring and berthing equipment, has received patent pending status on a system for monitoring the load on marine fenders. The new system is designed to help avoid disputes and the costly downtime associated with insurance claims. The marine fender load-monitoring system can be used to measure both the impact on fenders when a vessel berths, and the ongoing force applied as the vessel continues to bear against them while docked. “The data collected by this system could prove to be invaluable to ports and harbors all over the world in avoiding disputes and the costly downtime associated with insurance claims,” said Trelleborg Marine System’s Technical Director, Scott Smith.

RSL Fiber Systems to Provide Remote Source Lighting for Italian Navy Warships

EAST HARTFORD, CT (April 11, 2011) – RSL Fiber Systems, LLC has added yet another major distinction to its rapidly-increasing portfolio of achievements, securing its first international defense contract, with Italian shipbuilder Fincantieri, to supply fiber optic remote source lighting systems for the Italian Navy’s new FREMM class frigates, currently under construction. The contract, for the first six of an anticipated 10 FREMM (Fregata Europea Multi-Missione) anti-submarine warfare and general purpose frigates, is RSL’s first non-U.S. Navy agreement. Financial terms were not disclosed.
