Workboat Communications Evolve to Meet Myriad Missions

Choosing next generation communication systems for professional marine operations can be a daunting task. Not to worry: John Haynes provides a primer. Over the past decade we have come to expect fast, seamless global communications from a single device that fits in our pocket. The age of the smart phone and tablet enables multiple voices talking in a conference call and real time transfer of data, ranging from documents to photos and videos. In the modern bridge, most crew members have a GPS in their pocket which can identify where that person is on the planet.

Decision Sciences Awarded $2.1M DoD Contract for Portable Scanner

Decision Sciences International Corporation (DSIC) today announced it has been awarded a $2.1 million contract by the U.S. Department of Defense (DoD) Combating Terrorism Technical Support Office (CTTSO) to build a new type of portable-electronics scanner for threat detection. Under the contract, DSIC will deliver an integrated prototype product to detect small amounts of explosive materials within portable electronic devices such as mobile phones and laptop computers. Kvichak, Nichols Bros Deliver Third WETA Vessel

Kvichak Marine Industries and Nichols Brothers Boat Builders recently delivered the third of four high-speed, environmentally friendly ferries to the Water Emergency Transportation Authority (WETA) located in San Francisco. The M/V Scorpio is a 118-ft by 28.7-ft by six-ft high speed catamaran with a cruise speed of 25 knots at 85% of engine MCR. The all aluminum vessel has an interior seating capacity for 159 passengers and additional exterior seating for 49 passengers. The vessel will also carry 34 bicycles, which is 20% more than similar vessels in the San Francisco Bay area.

Samson R&D: Mozsgai, Pederson, Dundas

Samson, specialist in performance cordage, has furthered its commitment to research and development by hiring Greg Mozsgai, Senior R&D Engineer; Mark Pederson, R&D Engineer; and Dylan Dundas, Sales Support Technician. Greg Mozsgai comes to Samson with an MS degree in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign (U of I) and a BS degree in Engineering Science from Trinity University, San Antonio, Texas. His diverse experience includes microelectromechanical-systems (MEMS) design and fabrication. Most recently, he worked for a start up spun out of the U of I, manufacturing small fuel cells as battery replacements for portable electronics in both the consumer and industrial/military markets.
