This week, BigLift Shipping’s BigLift Baffin arrived in Singapore to deliver a crane boom and luffing frame for Heerema Marine Contractor’s new flag ship Sleipnir from the Huisman wharf in Xiamen, China. This is the first project for the vessel after her transformation into the BigLift colours. Sister vessel BigLift Barentsz’ first voyage in the BigLift livery will start next month with a shipment of container cranes for a Japanese client. It is well-known that at the end of 2017 BigLift Shipping ended the cooperation with RollDock for the management of the MC-Class vessels. Since January 1, the two BigLift-owned MC Class vessels are part of the BigLift fleet and are now sailing under the names BigLift Barentsz and BigLift Baffin.

RollDock and SAL Heavy Lift announced plans to join forces for roll-on/roll-off and float-in/float-out heavy lift cargoes, saying they will launch a “world’s first” pool for dock vessels from April 1, 2018. The pool will consist of the combined fleet of six vessels and will be managed by RollDock with SAL providing specialized heavy break bulk cargo support. Five of the vessels comes from the existing RollDock fleet (S and ST class vessels) and one from SAL (Combi Dock I). Both companies will also continue independently and operate vessels outside the pool.

BigRoll will continue  services as part of Roll Group. With the merger of the BigRoll organization, Roll Group will expand its fleet with of two module carriers in combination with the five existing multifunctional heavy lift, semi-submersible Ro-Ro vessels. The combination of BigRoll and RollDock allows for greater flexibility and enables Roll Group to provide improved Ro-Ro solutions to clients. Roll Group can benefit from the many years of engineering and project execution experience of RollDock and BigRoll at sea and Roll-Lift on land.

Having received a contract from NEM Energy BV for the transportation of two boiler blocks and two combustor units from Taiwan to Malaysia, Roll Group was called upon to put to work the combined capabilities of its in-house engineering department and experienced heavy transportation teams, enabling the group to offer a complete tailor-made solution by both land and sea. NEM Energy BV involved the Roll Group at an early stage in the project, and the group’s engineers worked together with the NEM team to produce a precisely fitting sea fastening design which was integrated into the boiler block.

RollDock Shipping B.V. (part of the Roll Group) confirmed the purchase of their 7th vessel, the MV RollDock Sky. This is the third semi-submersible multipurpose heavy lift vessel bought from Larsen & Toubro India. She will go directly into service after some upgrades. After RollDock and L&T ended their cooperation in 2013, L&T continued building a third semi-submersible multipurpose heavy lift vessel. During visits to the L&T yard by RollDock staff, RollDock was impressed by the quality and progress. Despite moderate market conditions, the Management, Supervisory Board and Shareholders decided to purchase the vessel and to name her MV RollDock Sky. The MV RollDock Sky is a sister vessel to MV RollDock Sun and MV RollDock Sea.

HB Centaurus is the latest addition to the RApide 4600-Z3 Class of shallow draft pushboat designs by Robert Allan Ltd., delivered to its owner: Hidrovias do Brasil in February, 2015. Constructed at Uzmar Shipyard, in Turkey, the HB Centaurus will operate in the Rio Paraguay and Rio Paraná river systems of South America. HB Centaurus in the eighth and final RApide 4600-Z3 Class vessel for this Owner, and in late March joined its sistership HB Scorpius on one of Rolldock’s heavy lift ships for delivery from Turkey to South America. This delivery took place 12 months after HB Hydra and HB Aquarius, the first two vessels in the series began their delivery voyage.

German shipbuilding has made a significant turnaround. The country’s shipbuilding industry has seen increases in the number of employees, orders and deliveries compared to 2013, according to the German Shipbuilding and Ocean Industries Association (VSM). The special shipbuilding sector drove this growth, as 20 of the 34 delivered new builds could be classified as high-quality special vessels or naval units. Although VSM announces its annual balance officially in May of each year, MR was able to obtain some early insights into the results.

The German shipbuilding industry has a world market share of around one percent. This is certainly in another league compared to China, South Korea and Japan, which divide the global shipbuilding pie of containerships, bulk carriers and tankers among themselves. But the German shipyards are on top in Europe. Flensburger Schiffbau-Gesellschaft (FSG) says it has delivered a second multi-purpose cargo ship, named 'Rolldock Storm' to Dutch shipping firm RollDock BV. The two versatile new ships, Rolldock Star and Rolldock Storm are 151.5 metre-long, multi-functional, specialised ships designed to transport challenging, heavy loads which do not fit traditional cargo transport moulds. FSV explains that the vessels stand out particularly because of their maximum flexibility and offer a range of different loading and unloading possibilities. Two heavy- duty cranes move cargo weighing up to 700 tons. In addition they boast height-adjustable stern ramps as well as hatch covers which can also be adjusted, making the two ships adaptable to piers of differing heights when in port.

The first two in a series of 8 in total Robert Allan design SDP 4600 Class push boats have been named at a ceremony in the UZMAR, Turkey shipyard. The shipbuilders say that these are the world’s most powerful diesel electric triple Z-drive shallow draft push boats ever built, able to transport a 16 barge flotilla of 48.000 dwt capacity over a 2500 km range. These push boats were ordered by Hidrovias do Brasil S.A. from the shipyard  in 2013, and the first two of the series named respectively HB HYDRA ASUNCION-PY and HB AQUIARIUS ASUNCION-PY have now been delivered after successful sea trials.

Vietnam’s first Kilo-class submarine named 'Hanoi' has arrived at the Cam Ranh Port in Khanh Hoa Province after a six week voyage from a Russian shipyard aboard the semi-submersible carrier 'Rolldock Sea', reports VietNamNet Bridge. The Kilo-636 submarine, is the first of the six 636 Varshavyanka (kilo)-class submarines run by diesel power that Vietnam is buying from Russia to modernise its navy, to enhance its capacity to defend the country’s territorial waters. The submarines are being built at Admiralty Verfi Shipyards in St. Petersburg.

Shipbuilding orders were rather less the past week, but there were notable contracts for specialised heavy-lift carriers from Chinese shipbuilders, according to the Clarkson Hellas S&P Weekly Bulletin round-up. Limited ordering to report this week in dry say Clarkson, with the focus very much being on the smaller sizes. Starting with the larger of these, Parakou Shipping have declared a further four options for 64,000 DWT Ultramax at Chengxi taking the total series to eight vessels. Delivery of these latest vessels from end 2015. In the Handysize dry bulk carrier market, Interlink have placed a new order for five firm plus five options 38,500 DWT bulkers at Kouan Shipbuilding.

Fabricating the large components of capital projects far from the final job site has a profound effect on the supply chain. Building these extremely heavy, out-of-gauge modules offsite and transporting them to their final destination relieves some headaches for project managers – but creates others. The current issue of Breakbulk Magazine examines the crucial roles that early planning and clear communication play in the successful transport of this increasingly standard project cargo. Reportedly, planning for module transport needs to begin as early as the design and manufacturing process, according to  Wout van der Zwan, managing director of RollDock Shipping. The method hastens installation but doubles planning time, adds Dick Knoll, principal with Drexel Logistics.

Amarcon announced that Rolldock has ordered OCTOPUS-Onboard for the newbuild Multipurpose Heavy lift vessel Rolldock Sea. This vessel is a sister ship of the Rolldock Sun, that has been in use from the beginning of 2010. All the ships from Rolldock use similar principles, a combination between float-in/float-out, roll-on/roll-off- en lift-on/lift-off capabilities. The Rolldock Sea is equipped with two cranes and a loading deck that can be adjusted into several positions, making it possible to adapt to every sort of dock in the world. Furthermore, the ship is semi-submersible. This means, by letting in water in ballast tanks, the Rolldock Sea is capable to let itself sink to a certain depth.

Larsen and Toubro Ltd (L&T) has won a contract valued at about $240m to build four specialized ships for Dutch company RollDock BV. Indian companies are currently building about 245 ships worth more than Rs20,000 crore. Of this, about 70% are for overseas clients, who are placing orders at Indian yards as shipbuilding facilities in maritime strongholds such as , and are fully booked till 2011. Each ship will cost about $60m to build. These will be built at L&T’s shipyard at Hazira in and would take the firm’s order book to 12 ships. The Mumbai-based company launched its shipbuilding venture in May 2006 with an order for building four ships valued at Rs440 crore from Rotterdam-based Zadeko Ship Management CV (now known as ).

India’s biggest engineering and construction firm, Larsen and Toubro Ltd, is in talks with a Dutch shipowner for a new building contract valued at more than $100 million according to the Wall Street Journal. New orders: Larsen and Toubro’s employees shift a 20-tonne ship part in the company’s shipbuilding yard in Hajira. L&T is negotiating with a Dutch shipowner for a new shipbuilding order. L&T is currently building eight ships valued at about Rs1,150 crore. These comprise six for RollDock and two from BigLift Shipping BV, also of the Netherlands. L&T launched its shipbuilding venture in May 2006 with an order for building four ships valued at Rs440 crore from the Rotterdam-based shipping firm Zadeko Ship Management CV (now known as RollDock BV).

According to reports, Indian engineering and construction firm Larsen & Toubro Ltd said it has won a repeat order worth over $70m to build two ships for Netherlands-based RollDock BV. The Dutch shipping company has also signed an agreement that includes options for more vessels of the same series to be built later this year, which will be delivered by May 2010, L&T said in a release. Engineering and construction major Larsen & Toubro urged the Government to encourage shipbuilding in the country through policy support. A committee of the Government was currently looking into various policy aspects concerning the shipbuilding industry. In May last year, Larsen & Toubro had announced foray into shipbuilding with the winning of a contract for building four cargo ships for Zadeko Ship Management (now Rolldock) of the Netherlands. Larsen & Toubro Ltd (L&T) has announced that the Company laid the keel for the first ship within 17 weeks of commencing operations at its shipbuilding yard at Hazira, near Surat. A 180-ton keel block - the heaviest ever by an Indian Shipyard - was ceremonially placed on the erection bay at the company's Hazira Shipyard. The Customary keel block lowering was done by Meindert Van Genderen, Director, Rolldock, Netherlands.
