Eureka Shipping Orders Cement Carrier for Great Lakes Trade

Eureka Shipping announced it has ordered a new cement carrier from Holland Shipyard Group in the Netherlands for scheduled for delivery in 2025.Eureka Shipping, jointly owned by SMT Shipping and The CSL Group, said the 12,500 dwt mechanical/pneumatic cement ship will replace two older vessels in the Great Lakes region while maintaining the same cargo capacity for operations.The newbuild will be fitted with a diesel-electric a propulsion system consisting of four generator sets

German Government Funds Rotor Sail Install on Baltrader Cement Carrier

The German government is providing funding to support the installation of an auxiliary wind propulsion system on board a cement carrier vessel.Hamburg-based Baltrader Capital GmbH & Co. KG. has signed a contract with wind propulsion systems provider Norsepower for the delivery of one 24m x 4m sized rotor sail in summer 2024. The product will be fitted on the newest cement carrier of the Baltrader fleet, Cemcommander, designed by SDC Ship Design & Consultants GmbH and built by Jiangsu Zhenjiang Shipyard (Group) Co. Ltd.The Norsepower rotor sail is a modernized version of the Flettner rotor.

95-year-old Laker S.T. Crapo to Be Scrapped

A nearly century-old vessel used as cement storage at the LaFargeHolcim terminal on the Fox River for the past 25 years is set to be scrapped.On Friday at sunrise, the S.T. Crapo began its journey under tow from the Port of Green Bay to be scrapped at Port Colborne, Ontario, Canada.Built in River Rouge, Mich., the S.T. Crapo was launched in 1927 as a self-unloading cement carrier operating on the Great Lakes, primarily carrying cement from Alpena, Mich.By the mid-1990s, the vessel was the last coal-fired freighter on the Great Lakes

Sunken Tugs Recovered from the Bottom of the Mersey River

Salvors have removed two tugs from the Mersey River in Devonport on the northwest coast of Tasmania that had been sunk by a cement carrier in January.New South Wales based emergency response, salvage and environmental support specialist, United Salvage, engaged AAL Shipping to supply the 31,000DWT 700 tonne heavy lift vessel AAL Melbourne for lifting of the tugs and their onward shipment along the East Coast to Brisbane. A christening ceremony at Oshima Shipbuilding yard in Japan was recently held by U-Ming Marine Transport Corporation (TSEC code: 2606 – one of nine public-listed companies of the Far Eastern Group) for its new built 99,990 DWT Post Panamax Bulk Carrier M.V. Cemtex Dominance.The event was hosted by Mr. Douglas Hsu, Chairman of the Far Eastern Group on July 12, 2022, with attendance of Mrs. Tracy Tsai Wang, who christened the vessel and also many business associates and distinguished guests.Measuring 235m in length and 40m in width, M.V.

Royal Bodewes to Build Cement Carrier for U-MING

Dutch shipbuilder Royal Bodewes announced it has won an order to build a 7,750 dwt cement carrier for Taiwanese shipowner and operator U-Ming Marine. The Taipei-based dry bulk shipowner has ordered a 115-meter-long cement carrier with a breadth of 15,8 meters. The Bodewes cement trader design is based on a previously delivered ship, but with a customer specific loading and unloading system designed specifically for sailing along the coast and the islands of Taiwan.The shipyard

St. Lawrence Seaway/Great Lakes Shipping Season Commences

The St. Lawrence Seaway’s 62nd navigation season kicked off on Tuesday with the transit of the Canadian-flagged cement carrier NACC Argonaut through Lock 8 on the Welland Canal.Then, in the early hours on Wednesday morning, first U.S.-flag commercial vessel transited the locks at Sault Ste. Marie, Mich., signaling the start of the U.S. fleet's 2020 sailing season.The Seaway’s Montreal / Lake Ontario section will open on April 1 this year, eight days after the opening of the Welland Canal.

Grounded Bulker Refloated off Oman

A bulk cement carrier that ran aground off beaches of Al-Fazayah Beach, Salalah in Oman has been refloated in one piece and without no damage to the environment, said the company behind the salvage operation, Resolve Marine Group.The partially loaded vessel, RAYSUTT II, departed Port of Salalah in May of last year when the port was evacuated due to adverse weather conditions. The vessel lost headway and steerage and subsequently grounded on on May 26, 2018 on Al- Fazayah Beach

Dual Fueled Cement Carrier Christened

The christening and launch of the 8,000 deadweight, dual fueled cement carrier M/V Shetland took place  at the Ferus Smit yard in Westerbroek.M.V. Shetland is the third dedicated cement carrier built for JT Cement AS, a joint venture between KGJ Cement, NovaAlgoma Cement Carriers Ltd and Erik Thun AB. Shetland is a sister vessel of the M/V Ireland and M/V Greenland.The vessel is equipped with an LNG fuelled propulsion system. "This unique design incorporates a 200 m3 pressurised LNG tank positioned in the foreship," it said in a press release.While sailing on LNG, the vessel will meet the most stringent emission criteria, as well as new norms that might be in place in futures for environmental sensitive areas

Ferus Smit Launches Arklow Wind

Dutch shipbuilder Ferus Smit successfully launched ‘Arklow Wind’ at the Ferus Smit yard in Leer."M.V. Arklow Wind is the second vessel in a series of 4 that will be delivered to our client from the city of Arklow, Ireland," said a press release.By design, Arklow Wind (which will sail under the Irish Flag) is an enlarged version of the 8500 DWT ships that we have delivered to Arklow Shipping in the past.In comparison with these vessels, Arklow Wind has almost twice the carrying capacity of 16500 DWT. She is equipped with a 3840kW main engine in order to achieve low fuel consumption.Meanwhile, Ferus Smit informed that it  will launch M.V. ‘Shetland’ at the Ferus Smit Westerbroek Yard on 11th of April.M.V.

First European Shipper Signs Green Shipping Guarantee Program

The European Investment Bank (EIB) announces the signature of the first agreement under its Green Shipping Guarantee Programme (GSGP) through ABN Amro.The EIB will contribute EUR 10.1 million to an ABN AMRO arranged facility to finance the construction of three cement carrier vessels for the Eureka Shipping group, said a press release.The project vessels’ design represents an improvement to the overall environmental performance of the promoter’s fleet, as well as cement carrier vessels currently operating in European waters. The new vessels, which will be laid up in the Netherlands, will operate with significantly better fuel efficiency

Cement Carrier Sports Innovative, 'Green' Cargo System

NACC Alicudi is reported to be the world’s first cement carrier equipped with IMO Tier III compliant diesel engines driving the bulk handling system. Converted in 2017 with a Van Aalst dry bulk handling system, the vessel became a unique and state-of-the-art 120m self-discharging cement carrier, with a cement handling system is based on compressors and vacuum pumps, driven by Tier III Scania engines. China Navigation Company Opens Vancouver Branch

China Navigation Company (CNCo), part of the Swire Group, has expanded its presence in North America by establishing a branch office in Vancouver, Canada.The opening ceremony was graced by Bruce Ralston, Minister of Jobs, Trade & Technology, British Columbia, who unveiled a plaque in the CNCo office located at W Hastings Street.Minister Bruce Ralston said, “The Province recognises the significant contribution that The China Navigation Company makes to the shipping industry worldwide. Great Lakes Shipping Season Kicks Off

The 2017 Great Lakes shipping season begins today when the U.S.-flag tug/barge unit Dorothy Ann/Pathfinder departs her winter lay-up berth in Erie, Pa., and sails to Cleveland, Ohio, where she will initiate the shuttle of iron ore from Cleveland Bulk Terminal to the ArcelorMittal steel mill at the end of the navigable portion of the Cuyahoga River on Wednesday. The vessel will load approximately 15,000 tons that was mined from Minnesota’s Mesabi Iron Range. The next vessel to get underway will be the cement carrier Bradshaw McKee/St. Marys Conquest on March 1.

Great Ships of 2016: Greenland

Since it started publishing in 1939, Maritime Reporter & Engineering News has recognized excellence in ship construction. Dutch shipbuilder Ferus Smit delivered what it is calling the world’s first LNG-powered cement tanker, MV Greenland. The delivery was preceded by an extensive program of trials and tests in which the proper working and safety of all systems was verified. On December 23, MV Greenland left the harbor of Delfzijl on its first commercial voyage to Rostock where it was scheduled to receive its first cement load. M.V.

Naming Ceremony for CNCo Newbuilding

Following the naming of its new cement carrier, MV Aotearoa Chief, in New Zealand yesterday, The China Navigation Company (CNCo) christened its last newbuild, MV Tunsin, on 16 November at the Imabari Shipyard in Japan. Tunsin is the 241st CNCo newbuilding and the 86th vessel in this series. CNCo ordered four handysize bulk carriers (Imbari38 loggers) from Imabari Shipbuilding in 2014. Deliveries of the first three vessels, MV Taiyuan, MV Tientsin and MV Tsingtao took place between July and October this year. The names chosen for the vessels reflect CNCo’s long history in the Asia Pacific region since its first ships sailed on the Yangtze River in 1872. MV Tunsin was named by lady sponsor, Sara Cutler, wife of Robert Cutler, Staff Director of John Swire & Sons Ltd.

PureSOx Installed on Canadian Cement Carrier

As well as being the established choice of scrubber for Emission Control Areas (ECAs), Alfa Laval PureSOx is proving its capabilities on the Great Lakes. The system will soon be installed on a cement carrier that will operate in the region as part of the NovaAlgoma fleet. NovaAlgoma Cement Carriers Limited has recently expanded its fleet with the M/v Nacc Quebec. This ecologically efficient self-discharging bulker will be converted from an existing vessel in China and will begin her operation in 2017.

Second LNG-powered Cement Carrier Delivered

Dutch shipbuilder Ferus Smit has delivered the second LNG-powered cement carrier, MV Ireland, to owners JT Cement, a joint venture between Swedish shipping company Erik Thun AB and Norway’s KG Jebsen Cement. MV Ireland, along with sister vessel MV Greenland delivered in December 2015, are the first ever dry cargo vessels with an LNG fuelled propulsion system and LNG tanks integrated inside the hull, the builder said. The newbuild’s design incorporates a pressurized LNG tank positioned in the foreship.

Gazprom in First LNG Bunkering at Rostock

Gazprom Germania GmbH, a subsidiary of Gazprom Export, has carried out its first bunkering of a ship with liquefied natural gas (LNG) at the port of Rostock, Germany. In the early hours of the morning of February 27, 2016, a ship was fueled with LNG for the first time in the southern Baltic Sea. The bunkering took place at Germany’s largest Baltic Sea port. The ship bunkered was the M.V. Greenland, a cement carrier owned by the Norwegian shipping company KGJ Cement AS. The LNG was transported to Rostock by road tanker. “We are very pleased to witness this new development at our port,” added Jens Aurel Scharner, managing director of Rostock Port.

Great Lakes Freighters Getting Underway Again

The Lake Carriers’ Association (LCA) announced that the 2016 shipping season on the Great Lakes began on March 2 when the tug/barge unit Dorothy Ann/Pathfinder loaded 4,600 tons of iron ore at Cleveland Bulk Terminal for delivery to ArcelorMittal Cleveland at the end of the navigable portion of the Cuyahoga River. That much iron ore will keep the mill in operation for about one day. The vessel could have delivered another 4,100 tons, but the Cuyahoga River is notorious for silting up over the winter, and the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers will not dredge the river again until mid-May. The next vessel to get underway will be the cement carrier G. L. Ostander/Integrity on March 7, LCA said.
