US Navy Recovers Downed Helicopter from Record Ocean Depth

The U.S. Navy last week retrieved one of its crashed helicopters from 19,075 feet below the surface of the North Pacific, setting a record for the deepest aircraft recovery at sea.The helicopter, a twin engine Sikorsky Seahawk, crashed off the coast of Okinawa, Japan last year while operating from the amphibious command ship USS Blue Ridge (LCC-19). Vigor Wins $133 Mln US Navy Repair Job

Vigor Marine has been awarded a $133,406,869 firm-fixed-price contract to prepare for and accomplish repair and alteration requirements for USS McCampbell (DDG 85) chief of naval operations scheduled depot maintenance availability. The contract includes options which, if exercised, will bring the cumulative value of this contract to $155,621,173.The Arleigh Burke-class guided-missile destroyer departed Fleet Activities Yokosuka, Japan on July 2, and is currently is en route to Vigor's Portland, Ore. shipyard, where she will undergo her midlife modernization.

U.S. warship USS John S. McCain, which was involved in a collision with a cargo ship east of the Straits of Malacca and Singapore in August, has arrived at Fleet Activities Yokosuka for repair. The Arleigh Burke-class guided missile destroyer DDG 56 arrived in Tokyo Bay aboard heavy lift transport vessel MV Treasure on December 5, and arrived at Fleet Activities Yokosuka on December 13 following several days of preparations. The vessel will be repaired by U.S. Naval Ship Repair Facility-Japan Regional Maintenance Center in Yokosuka before returning to service in U.S. 7th Fleet.

USS John S. McCain Heads to Yokosuka for Repair

U.S. warship USS John S. McCain, which was involved in a collision with the merchant vessel east of the Straits of Malacca and Singapore in August, has departed Subic Bay, Philippines aboard heavy lift transport vessel MV Treasure en route to Fleet Activities Yokosuka for reapir. The Arleigh Burke-class guided missile destroyer USS John S. McCain (DDG 56) was diverted to Subic Bay October 22, due to poor weather conditions and to repair cracks in the ship's hull discovered after the ship departed Singapore aboard MV Treasure, the Navy said.

USS John S. McCain Departs Changi Naval Base

The guided missile destroyer USS John S. McCain (DDG 56) departed Changi Naval Base Oct. 5, to meet heavy lift transport vessel MV Treasure. Over the next few days, John S. McCain will be towed to deep water, where the heavy lift vessel will lower itself, secure the ship on a platform and then raise back up out of the water. After the process of loading the ship is complete, Treasure will transport John S. McCain to Fleet Activities Yokosuka, where the forward deployed ship will be repaired. In the weeks prior to departure from Singapore, crew members, technicians and divers prepared the ship for the journey by conducting damage assessments and placing key systems in layup maintenance. A patch was also installed over damaged sections of the hull to restore watertight integrity. John S.

USS Ronald Reagan Departs for Sea Trials

The U.S. Navy's only forward-deployed aircraft carrier USS Ronald Reagan (CVN 76), departed Commander, Fleet Activities Yokosuka (CFAY) May 7. Ronald Reagan's crew shifted colors at 11:54 a.m. and made way to conduct sea trials in the final phase of the ship's selective restricted availability (SRA) maintenance period, which began January 10. "I am extremely proud of the Reagan crew's accomplishments up to this point of our SRA period," said Capt. Buzz Donnelly, commanding officer.

CNO, MCPON Visit Sailors Aboard USS Ronald Reagan

Press release - Chief of Naval Operations (CNO) Adm. John Richardson and Master Chief Petty Officer of the Navy (MCPON) Mike Stevens visited Sailors aboard the aircraft carrier USS Ronald Reagan (CVN 76) at Commander, Fleet Activities Yokosuka (CFAY), Japan, Oct. 15. CNO held an all-hands call with MCPON to address Sailors as Ronald Reagan made preparations to depart for her first patrol as the U.S. Navy's only forward-deployed aircraft carrier. "Today is a historic day for Ronald Reagan, Japan and the alliance," said Richardson.

USS Milius Departs on Deployment

The guided missile destroyer USS Milius (DDG 69) departed Naval Base San Diego Oct. 20 on an independent deployment to the Western Pacific and Indian Oceans. The ship and crew of more than 300 Sailors, assigned to Destroyer Squadron (DESRON) 21, will conduct presence operations and goodwill activities with partner nations. Prior to deploying to the U.S. 7th Fleet area of responsibility, Milius will participate in a Task Group Exercise off the coast of Southern California, Oct. 20-31, along with other units from the U.S and Canadian navies and the Japan Maritime Self-Defense Force. U.S. 3rd Fleet will lead the exercise that serves to train independently-deploying units in air defense…

CANES Sets Sail Aboard USS McCampbell

The U.S. Navy and Northrop Grumman Corporation have installed Consolidated Afloat Networks and Enterprise Services (CANES) on the Arleigh Burke-class guided-missile destroyer USS McCampbell. The installation was completed during the ship's approximate five-month scheduled maintenance at U.S. Fleet Activities Yokosuka, Japan. Prior to installation, Northrop Grumman produced, integrated and tested the CANES system and delivered it for acceptance to the Tactical Networks Program Office, Program Executive Office of Command, Control, Communications, Computers and Intelligence (C4I).

Vice Chief of Naval Operations Visits Japanese Government

The vice chief of naval operations (VCNO) met with several key leaders within the government of Japan and its Ministry of Defense Aug. 26. Adm. Mark Ferguson is at the beginning of a series of engagements in Tokyo, at several U.S. Navy installations in Region Japan, and with neighboring local government officials this week. During this first day of the trip, Ferguson met with the Japan Minister of Defense, Itsunori Onodera, and the Japan Maritime Self-Defense Force Vice Chief of Staff, Vice Adm. Eiichi Funada.

USS George Washington Off on Sea Trials

After working alongside craftsmen from the Puget Sound Naval Shipyard and Ship Repair Facility Yokosuka to complete routine maintenance to the Nimitz-class aircraft carrier, Sailors will now put the ship through a series of tests before going underway. George Washington sailed from its Truman Bay pier into open waters to begin a certification process that will ensure the ship, its equipment and crew are ready for extended periods at sea. "We're ready to execute sea trials," said Capt. David A. Lausman, George Washington's commanding officer.

CNO Speaks on Leadership, Future, FDNF

Mike Mullen conducted an all hands call for forward-deployed Sailors aboard Fleet Activities Yokosuka on June 19. Hundreds of Sailors from the region came to the base’s Fleet Theater to hear CNO talk about today’s Navy and the importance of developing strong leadership for the future. Mullen spoke about his recent attendance at the Naval Academy’s graduation and said that somewhere in that crowd or somewhere in an ROTC unit is the future CNO. “We’ve got to get the base right,” Mullen emphasized. “How can you reach in and lead, so we can continue to be a very robust system?” Mullen asked.

Last Call for Navy's Large Harbor Tugs

Large harbor tug Opelika (YTB 798) and Kittanning (YTB 787) follow alongside the Arleigh Burke-class guided missile destroyer USS Mustin (DDG 89) as she gets underway on board Commander Fleet Activities Yokosuka. U.S. The U.S. Navy large harbor tugs seem to have all but disappeared from most U.S. ports over the last decade. But in a few ports around the world the Navy-owned and operated tug endures as the backbone of port operations. Fleet Activities Yokosuka happens to be one of the naval bases on which the legacy of the large harbor tug continues to influence not only the operations of the port, but the Sailors that work aboard these perennial workhorses of the Navy.

Teamwork Key in Kitty Hawk’s SRA progress

As USS Kitty Hawk (CV 63) enters its fourth month of a ship's restricted availability (SRA) period April 6, Sailors, Ship's Repair Facility (SRF) workers, and Japanese contractors work together to ensure the Navy's oldest active-duty warship remains in fighting shape. Maintenance and repairs being completed aboard Kitty Hawk affect almost every space and compartment on the ship. “As Kitty Hawk approaches her 45th birthday, I believe the team we have here is key to keeping Kitty Hawk battle ready. I know she’s as combat ready today as any other ship in the fleet thanks to the work done by the 2,000 Japanese contractors, SRF workers and the ship’s crew,” said Capt. Ed McNamee, Kitty Hawk’s commanding officer.
