Three Mariners Rescued near Cerberus Shoal
Coast Guard Station New London crewmembers rescued three mariners after their vessel caught on fire at 6:45 A.M., Sunday, near Cerberus Shoal. A father of one of the mariners notified Coast Guard Sector Long Island Sound that the 50-foot long liner Long Shot was burning near Fisherās Island. The crewmembers had abandoned ship and boarded a life raft. Watchstanders at Sector Long Island Sound launched boat crews from Coast Guard Station Montauk and Coast Guard Station New London. A helicopter crew from Air Station Cape Cod also responded. Station New London crewmembers in a 45-foot Response Boat Medium arrived on scene at 7:15 A.M. and recovered the mariners and life raft. The mariners were all wearing survival gear, including lifejackets, and no injuries or medical concerns were reported.
Montaukās Coast Guard Holds Change of Command
U.S. Crewmembers of U.S. Coast Guard (USCG) Station Montauk held a change of command and retirement ceremony in Montauk, N.Y., Thursday. Capt. Edward J. Cubanski, commander, Coast Guard Sector Long Island Sound, presided over the ceremony to transfer command of Station Montauk from Senior Chief Petty Officer Jason Walter to Senior Chief Petty Officer Eric Best. Best comes to Montauk after recently serving as the executive petty officer of Station Gulfport, Miss. Walter retired after serving 20 years in the USCG.
Islander Crew, Passengers Pull Man from Cold Water
The crew and passengers aboard the ferry Islander rescued Johnny Goodwin, of Southhold, N.Y., within minutes of falling into the cold waters of Gardiners Bay from a work barge on Dec. 19. A combination of skillful seamanship, adherence to Coast Guard safety regulations blended to save Goodwin's life. The Islander and three other ferries from the North Ferry Co. connect Shelter Island with Greenport, on Long Island. The ferries make the two nautical mile round trip from early morning to late night. The Islander was taking a full load of passengers and vehicles to Long Island at dusk when Goodwin fell. One of the passengers aboard the ferry saw Goodwin and alerted ferry captain Edward J.
LI Ferry Accident
Coast Guard rescue crews are searching for a missing ferry passenger after two people were reported unaccounted for, and a 65-ft. paving truck fell off the ferry Susan Anne less than one mile off Orient Point, Long Island, N.Y., 10 a.m. today. A crew from a second ferry in the vicinity responded and initially recovered one person from the water deceased. The victim was then transferred by the crew of the Susan Anne to Eastern Long Island Hospital in Greenport, Long Island, N.Y. Names are being withheld until next of kin can be notified. A Coast Guard Air Station Cape Cod, Mass., Jayhawk rescue helicopter crew, two Coast Guard rescue boat crews from Station Montauk and a rescue boat crew from Station New London continue to search for the second passenger.
Long Island USCG Stations Receive MLBs
USCG Stations Jones Beach and Fire Island, in NY, have become the newest USCG Group Moriches units to receive the new 47-ft. Motor Lifeboat (MLB). The state-of-the-art 47-ft. MLB will be replacing the 44-ft. MLB as part of the USCG's Office of Shore Activities' Motor Lifeboat Replacement Project. The 47-ft. MLB is expected to perform the USCG missions of Search and Rescue, Law Enforcement, and Marine Environmental Protection for the next 25 years. The 47-ft. MLB is designed to be more comfortable, easier to operate, environmentally safer and more capable than the 44-ft. MLB. Built by Textron Marine & Land System (New Orleans) to USCG specifications, the 47-ft. MLB is capable of operating in 20-ft. breaking surf, 30-ft. open seas, and 50-knot sustained wind speed.
