US' FTA Announces $316 Million for Ferry Service Modernization

The U.S. Department of Transportation’s Federal Transit Administration (FTA) on Wednesday announced the availability of $316 million to support and modernize passenger ferry service in communities across the country.Ferry transit is a critical mode of transportation in many regions throughout the United States. Texas DOT Christens New Ferry Esperanza 'Hope' Andrade

BC Ferries Awards Shipyard Contract for New Hybrid Electric Vessels

DFDS has completed its acquisition of FRS Iberia/Maroc, a short-sea ferry company connecting Spain and Morocco via the Strait of Gibraltar.“We are excited to start the integration of FRS Iberia/Maroc and look forward to applying our joint capabilities to grow the business while continuing to provide reliable, efficient ferry services to both passengers and freight customers,” said Torben Carlsen, CEO of DFDS.Reporting preliminary revenue of DKK 1.0bn for 2023, FRS Iberia/Maroc has three routes operated by a total of 850 staff of which just over 400 are own employees.

ABB Supplies Charging System for Auckland’s New Electric Ferries

Rederiaktiebolaget Eckerö Sells M/S Birka Stockholm Ship for €38M

Rederiaktiebolaget Eckerö, a Finnish shipping company providing passenger and cargo ferry services, has agreed to sell the M/S Birka Stockholm cruise ship to Rederi AB Gotland. The sale price is around 38 million euros.Delivery of the vessel to Rederi AB Gotland is expected to occur in April 2023.The ship sale will cause a write-down amounting to around 12 million euros in Rederiaktiebolaget Eckerö's Annual Report for 2022, which will be published on April 12, 2023. "This write-down deviates from the Q4 quarterly report that was published on February 28, 2023," Rederiaktiebolaget Eckerö explained.Built in 2004 by Aker Finnyards in Rauma, Finland, the Birka Stockholm is 177 meters long, 28 meters wide, and can accommodate 1800.

Stena Line Inks Deal to Operate Birkenhead Terminal Until 2100

One of Europe’s largest ferry route and port operators, Stena Line, said it has signed a new deal with U.K. port operator Peel Ports to operate its 12 Quays port and ferry terminal in Birkenhead until the beginning of the 22nd Century. The Swedish company has operated twice daily ferry services to Belfast since 2011 and this new deal will see them continue to operate there for at least another 77 years, until 2100.The value of the deal has not been disclosed.Stena Line operates six routes and 12 vessels across the region and Birkenhead has been a key focus for investment in recent years.

Cemre Selected as Preferred Bidder to Build Two Ferries for Little Minch

The preferred bidder has been named for a contract to build two new ferries to support the communities at Uig, Lochmaddy and Tarbert (Harris).Caledonian Maritime Assets Ltd (CMAL) said it intends to award the contract to the Cemre Marin Endustri A.S shipyard in Turkey, following a 10 day standstill period.In October 2022, The Scottish Government prioritised additional funding to enable CMAL to accelerate plans for replacement vessels.
