US Bolsters Its Sealift and Tanker Support Fleets

The United States has bolstered its fleet of U.S.-flagged sustainment sealift vessels and product tankers to support the Department of Defense (DoD) during times of armed conflict or national emergency.The U.S. Department of Transportation’s Maritime Administration (MARAD) in recent months has been building up fleets of commercial vessels under its Maritime Security Program (MSP) and Tanker Security Program (TSP), and on Tuesday it announced full enrollment in each.The newly selected MSP vessels Liberty Power and Tulane operate under Liberty Global Logistics, LLC of Lake Success, N.Y. and American Roll-On Roll-Off Carrier Group Inc.'s (ARC) shipowning component Fidelio Limited Partnership of Ponte Vedra Beach, Fla., respectively.

Maritime Partners Acquires Maersk's USMMI

Maritime Partners, a Louisiana-based provider of maritime financing solutions primarily focused on Jones Act vessels, announced that on September 20, 2023, one of its managed funds acquired Norfolk, Va.-based U.S. Marine Management LLC (USMMI) from Maersk Line, Limited.USMMI owns and operates U.S. flag vessels—including one owned maritime support vessel, three owned tankers, and one bareboat chartered tanker—for charter to the U.S. Navy's Military Sealift Command. It also performs operation and maintenance of U.S. government-owned vessels, and currently has one O&M contract supporting U.S.

Inchcape Shipping Services Appoints Regional CEO for the Americas

Port agency and marine services company Inchcape Shipping Services (ISS) announced it has appointed Harun Duzgoren as the regional chief executive officer for the Americas, effective September 1, 2023.Duzgoren brings to the role 23 years of managerial experience in the global marine services industry. Prior to joining ISS, he served as the chief commercial officer of Subsea Global Solutions. Before that, he spent 16 years at V.Group, where he held various senior international positions.

PD Ports Orders New Hopper Dredge from Neptune

PD Ports in the U.K. has ordered a new dredging vessel from Dutch shipbuilder Neptune Marine.The 71-meter-long hopper dredge, which has already been named the Emerald Duchess following a competition among PD Ports employees, was ordered for £23 million and will arrive at Teesport next summer.Currently under construction at a shipyard in Poland for commissioning, ahead of trials in the Netherlands in 2024, the Emerald Duchess will replace the Cleveland County, which had served

Alka Marine, Acta Marine Partner to Purchase a Damen Multicat

Alka Marine and Acta Marine have teamed up within a joint venture (JV) to purchase a Damen Multicat 2712, operated by Alka Marine.The JV company called Alka Marine International, is incorporated under the French law and registered in Saint Nazaire. The vessel is named Coastal Aurora.Built in 2014, the 27-meter-long vessel is adapted to offshore wind support operations, including anchoring works, subsea structure maintenance, among others. With its 2 x 9.8-ton cranes at 16.5-meter, and a 150-ton winch, the Coastal Aurora has a bollard pull of 34 tons and has a 150-square-meter deck space.

Inchcape CEO Frank Olsen Steps Down

Frank Olsen has stepped down as CEO of British multinational ports and marine management company Inchcape Shipping Services (ISS) effective November 30, 2022, the company announced on Friday.ISS said it has appointed a new CEO, Philippe Maezelle who joins December 1, 2022. Maezelle is an international business leader with strong executive transformation experience across the professional services industries. Crowley Joins Ship Recycling Transparency Initiative

Crowley Maritime Corporation has become the first U.S.-owned and 13th overall ship owner-operator that will publicly disclose its ship recycling policies, practices and process through the Ship Recycling Transparency Initiative (SRTI) website.Headquartered in Florida and operating more than 160 commercial and public-sector vessels globally, including containerships, tank vessels, tugboats and barges, Crowley becomes the first U.S.-owned and operated shipping company to make its approach to ship recycling public through the SRTI.

Latsco Inks LNG Carrier Maintenance Deal with Wärtsilä

Greece-based Latsco LNG Marine Management has signed a five-year maintenance agreement with Wärtsilä covering the main engines for two large liquefied natural gas (LNG) carriers, the Hellas Diana and the Hellas Athina.The deal signed in March 2021 covers two new vessels built at the Hyundai Heavy Industries (HHI) yard in South Korea. They are 297 meters in length and have a cargo capacity of 174,000 cubic meters. The Hellas Diana entered service at the end of March this year, and the Hellas Athina is scheduled to enter service in September.

Swedish tanker shipping company Concordia Maritime has named Martin Nerfeldt as the new CFO and member of Group management. He will replace the current CFO Ola Helgesson, who has decided to leave his position to take on new challenges.Nerfeldt holds an MSc (Economics) from the Gothenburg School of Business, Economics, and Law, and joins the Company from his role as CFO of Sail Racing International AB. He has over 20 years’ experience in finance, economics, and business development

James J. White, Executive Director, Port of Baltimore, announced his resignation effective December 31, 2019.White led operations for 18 years as the Port of Baltimore improved its national rankings, upgraded security procedures and completed infrastructure projects that made it one of the few ports in America capable of receiving the largest ships in the world.Under Executive Director White, the Port of Baltimore leads the nation in handling autos and light trucks, roll on/roll off heavy farm and construction machinery, as well as imported sugar and gypsum.

ABPmer Maps Shipping Cargo Value

Marine Management Organisation (MMO) has published results of a project undertaken by the UK-based marine consultancy  ABPmer, to develop a method to assign values to shipping cargo.The resulting mapping and information will improve the evidence base used in developing marine plan policies.Monty Smedley, maritime sector lead at ABPmer said “This was an exciting and novel project for us. Crew Members: the Key to Greater Efficiency

Stena Bulk Asks to Visit Crew of Seized Tanker

The British operator of the tanker seized by Tehran, Stena Bulk, made a request on Sunday, July 21st, to visit the 23 crew members of the seized tanker Stena Impero, and is expecting a response from the Iranian government.A statement from the tanker operator quoted President and Chief Executive of Stena Bulk, Erik Hanell, as saying: “I can confirm a formal request for permission to visit the 23 crew members of the Stena Impero has been made to the authorities at the Port of Bandar Abbas.“The request has been acknowledged, but we await a formal response. In the meantime, we will continue to co-operate and liaise with all appropriate authorities.Hanell

ASPA Names Clark as Deputy Director

The Alabama State Port Authority (ASPA) announced that maritime executive Richard T. Clark will be its new deputy director.James K. Lyons, director and chief executive officer of the ASPA said that the appointment is effective July 16, 2019.“We conducted a nationwide search with one of the country’s premier maritime and port industry recruiting firms and the Port Authority received resumes from quite a few qualified candidates,” said Lyons. “Clark stood out amongst all the applicants and was selected for this position. We look forward to Rick joining the Port Authority team.”Clark, with over 30 years of maritime industry experience, began his career at Cooper T. Smith in New Orleans before joining Puerto Rico Marine Management, Inc.

UK's Shoreham Welcomes Home Registered Vessel

Shoreham Port UK, claimed to be UK's number 1 scallop port, welcome home registered fishing vessel ‘Flowing Stream’ following a significant refit that began in the spring of 2018.Originally built in the year 2000, the vessel was flagged in from Belgium where it was previously registered to be renovated and renewed to bring it up to new vessel standards. Flowing Stream will join a long line of fishing vessels registered at Shoreham Port that date back to the 13th Century.Flowing Stream is one of the many scalloping vessels that regularly land in the Port each year, with the Marine Management Organisation’s recently published report revealing that in 2018, 18% of scallops landed in the UK by UK fishing vessels were landed at Shoreham Port, making it the number one scallop Port in the UK.

Launching this week in partnership with Airbus, Wilhelmsen’s shore-to-ship Singapore pilot project, marks the first deployment of drone technology in real-time port conditions, delivering a variety of small, time-critical items to working vessels at anchorage.Lifting off from Marina South Pier in Singapore with 3D printed consumables from Wilhelmsen’s onshore 3D printing micro-factory, the Airbus Skyways drone navigated autonomously along pre-determined ‘aerial-corridors’ in its 1.5km flight to Eastern Working Anchorage.

Laborde Marine Announces Management Changes

New Orleans-based offshore oil industry service provider Laborde Marine Management  announced that Ashton P. Laborde has been appointed as President of the Company effective January 1, 2019. Laborde joined the Company in 2007 and most recently served as Director of Marketing. Throughout his career at Laborde Marine, Ashton has held various positions of increasing importance in operations. The marine company which owns or operates a fleet of 25 vessels also annouced that  John Peter Laborde, III, has joined the Company as Director of Finance. Friedman, was elected chairman of the Green Marine’s Board of Directors following the corporation’s Annual General Meeting on May 31, during GreenTech 2018, in Vancouver B.C. Digital Naming of Stena Immortal

The digital naming of the MR tanker Stena Immortal took place January 18 at Stena's new office in Hellerup in the north of Copenhagen. The 50,000 dwt Stena Immortal was built at the Guangzhou Shipbuilding International (GSI) shipyard in southeast China and is jointly owned on a 50-50 basis by Stena Bulk and Indonesian Golden Agri Resources (GAR). Following her delivery in September 2016, the 183-meter-long tanker has sailed in one of Stena Bulk's global logistics systems, which currently employ some 60 vessels, with a focus on refined petroleum products, vegetable oils and chemicals. When the Stena Immortal was named, it was not physically present in Copenhagen but in Houston where it is already in service.
