Harland & Wolff Group has been awarded a dry dock contract for two cruise ships from P&O Cruises and Cunard respectively that will occupy the Belfast drydock for 33 days in total. The companies have selected Harland & Wolff's 81-acre Belfast shipyard to undertake drydocking works on two of its ships - Aurora and Queen Victoria. The works due to be undertaken on both ships are standard drydocking operations.The first ship to dock under this agreement will be Cunard's Queen Victoria which entered service in December 2007.

InfraStrata, the parent company of Belfast shipyard Harland and Wolff, has entered into a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with Spanish shipbuilding company Navantia SA.Under the MoU, the companies plan to cooperate on offshore wind projects, among other things.Subject to completion of the acquisition of the assets of Harland & Wolff Heavy Industries Ltd and Harland & Wolff Group PLC by InfraStrata, the memorandum envisages utilizing these assets for the purposes of providing a range of services to Navantia, the company said.These services will include supporting Navalia in its proposed tender for contracts to provide three new Fleet Solid Support ships for the Royal Fleet Auxiliary in the UK.

The Belfast shipyard Harland and Wolff, the 158-year-old shipyard in Northern Ireland that built the Titanic, is preparing for bankruptcy.The ship building company was put into administration on Monday after its bankrupt Norwegian owner Dolphin Drilling failed to find a buyer and calls for its nationalization were rebuffed.The shipyard has been occupied by workers since last Monday as part of a high-profile campaign to save the yard, which is due to formally cease trading at 5.15pm on Monday.They said on Monday they would block administrators from entering the site. Trade unions said that they will not give up on this famous shipyard.

Roxtec provided its waterproof sealing solution to what is called  the largest and most powerful tidal turbine in the world. Roxtec UK managing director Graham O’Hare said the deal with Scotrenewables Tidal Power Limited involved Roxtec supplying the new SR2000 2MW floating turbine which is 65m long, 3m diameter and weighs 550 tons. “The turbine was built in Orkney and at the Harland and Wolff shipyard in Belfast, and Roxtec provided support at both locations throughout the project,” O’Hare said.

In a multi-million pound boost to the Northern Ireland economy, Belfast ship builder Harland and Wolff has secured a contract to carry out major work on an oil rig. Dolphin Drilling Limited has awarded H&W the contract for the drydocking and Renewal/Special Periodic Survey of its Byford Dolphin Mobile Offshore Drilling Unit (MODU). H&W Director of ship and offshore unit repair, James Lappin said that this was a significant project for Harland and Wolff and for Northern Ireland. As well as employment opportunities, the supply chain within Northern Ireland will see significant activity in support of the project, he added. Around 1,000 contractors will be employed to overhaul the structure for up to 10 weeks and 60 permanent staff are to be recruited, the Belfast firm announced.

Offshore wind developer Forewind’s second of two planned meteorological masts was erected at Dogger Bank during the weekend using the innovative suction installed Bucket Foundation and a “human free” technique for the steel tower placement. The latest mast to be installed – Dogger Bank Met Mast West - will provide essential wind, wave and other weather information, as well as marine traffic data for the Dogger Bank offshore wind energy development. The Glosten Associates, Inc. announced it has been awarded a contract from the U.K.–based Energy Technologies Institute (ETI) for the engineering phase of the floating offshore wind turbine demonstrator using the PelaStar tension leg platform (TLP) foundation system. The $6 million (U.S.), 12-month contract will complete the Front End Engineering Design (FEED) in advance of construction and deployment of a 6 MW demonstration unit off the south coast of the U.K. as early as 2015.

Harland and Wolff Technical Services Ltd, the design engineering consultancy of Harland and Wolff Group PLC, has been awarded a contract from Nantong Cosco KHI Ship Engineering Company (known as NACKS) to develop a new design for a Suezmax oil tanker. Nacks is a very successful joint venture between COSCO and Kawasaki Heavy Industries, making them one of the leading yards in China. The design will be marketed by NACKS to shipowners worldwide and, following a build contract, Technical Services shall produce the detailed engineering for the entire vessel. “It marks a breakthrough into the significant potential of the Far East market where the significant current and planned investment in shipbuilding facilities offers a tremendous opportunity for Technical Services to provide our expertise.

A&P Tyne has redelivered the Royal Fleet Auxiliary (RFA) fleet support vessel Sir Percivale following an extended survey and repair period (ESRP). The work was completed on August 12, and redelivered back to the RFA within time and budget. A&P Tyne secured this contract from the UK Ministry of Defence (MoD) entering into a competitive tender process with other UK shipyards, including North West Shiprepairers (Birkenhead), Garvel Shiprepairers (Clydebank) and Harland and Wolff (Belfast). Harland & Wolff's (H&W) existence was extended last week as it won a 300 million pound ($458 million) contract to build four passenger ferries. The order from Bahamas-based Seamasters International Inc. includes an option for two additional ships. "This is very good news for us. If the full six vessels are ordered, we're looking at work until 2004," spokesman Peter Harbinson said. The order came just a day after Harland & Wolff workers accepted a three-year pay deal, a deal which was equally crucial in ensuring the company's near-term future. Harbinson estimated the order for the RoRo ferries would secure around 1,000 of the 1,300 core jobs at the shipyard.

Two Norwegian oilfields were shut Wednesday amid fears that a stricken exploration rig might start dragging its anchors in high seas and threaten to crash into them. The North Sea Snorre and Vigdis fields, with a combined output of 260,000 bpd, closed after three of the rig's eight anchors broke free of the seabed in a storm which produced 55 ft. waves. About two-thirds of the rig workers were evacuated via helicopter, and no injuries were reported. According to the company, it is still too early to indicate what the Bideford Dolphin incident would cost. The rig, which was recently upgraded at Harland and Wolff, is owned by Fred Olsen Energy and is on lease to Hydro for oil exploration drilling.

Northern Irish shipyard Harland and Wolff has won a provisional order worth more than $350 million to build two luxury cruise liners, company officials said. The shipyard, which earlier this month secured its future with a $450 million order for four passenger ferries, said it had been awarded a letter of intent by cruise line Luxus Holdings. The 28,000 ton ships will carry 380 passengers and measure more than 656 ft. (200 m), officials said. Luxus said the ships were designed to mimic the standards of a large luxury yacht. The order follows news that Northern Ireland's largest manufacturing sector employer, Bombardier Aerospace, plans to create 1,200 new jobs over the next two years at its Belfast-based aerospace unit Short Brothers Plc.

"There is the order for the four Ropax ferries and there is also a letter of understanding for two luxury cruise liners. However there is a time lag until the full benefit of these orders feeds through, unfortunately making these redundancies necessary," a spokesman said.

Workers at Harland and Wolff shipbuilders narrowly accepted a pay offer that could throw a lifeline to the yard that built the Titanic, their union said. The margin was slim at 424 to 389 to support what management said were final proposals that would give skilled employees about $475 a week. That wage would be guaranteed until at least January 2003 and include a further bonus opportunity. The Northern Ireland yard, majority-owned by Norway's Fred Olsen Energy, could be poised to win a $613 million order for four Norwegian ferries that may help it avoid closing its gates for good. "According to the negotiations we have been having with the company, there is an order now available on the basis that we were prepared to accept these proposals," Joe Bowers of the MSF union said.
