Gray Water & Bilge Water: Taking Steps to Clean Up the Ocean Environment

John Paparone

The fact that improperly-treated gray water pollution is still being dumped off ships in a so-called modern and highly-regulated shipping industry is hypocritical at best. Graywater – which comes from ship accommodation areas (shower/sink), laundry, galley and food pulper – can contain classical pollutants such as nonylphenols, metals, nutrients, surfactants, pathogens, oil, grease, detergent and soap residue. Graywater is sometimes mixed with sewage, depending on the ship design. Graywater can have varying levels of harmful contaminants.

Vessel fleets face an increasing number of environmentally focused regulations, adding complexity to their operations and creating urgency around compliance. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), under the Vessel General Permit (VGP), requires that all vessels over 79 feet use an “Environmentally Acceptable Lubricant” (EAL) in oil-to-water interfaces unless technically infeasible. The 2013 VGP revision also requires any above water line hull cleaning or deck wash-downs resulting in discharge to be conducted with “minimally toxic…

RSC Bio Solutions Busts Myths Surrounding Readily Biodegradable Fluids

There’s a lot of conflicting information related to readily biodegradable lubricants and fluids. What’s the real story? The U.S. EPA’s 2013 Vessel General Permit (VGP) requirements are now in place requiring the use of environmentally acceptable lubricants (EALs) in oil to water interfaces for vessels over 79 feet. The VGP revision also requires any above water line hull cleaning or deck washdowns resulting in discharge to be conducted with appropriate cleaners and detergents.

It’s not new, but is MV Cellus one of the cleanest ship in the world? Quick question: When the words “Green Shipping” and “German Maritime” are put together, is the first thought in your mind modern cruise ships? If you answered yes, it would be understandable; but partially right, partially wrong. Recently Maritime Reporter & Engineering News German-based contributing editor Dipl.-Ing. Klüber Lubrication

Whether their job is in the international transport of goods, the extraction of oil or gas, or in the cruise business – ships operating at sea or on inland waterways are exposed to high stresses. Many factors work simultaneously toward the degradation of vessel and systems, factors such as extreme cold or heat, high mechanical loads, corrosion, rising and falling temperatures, micro-movement, and the contact with salty air and sea water, all make maintenance and repair a perpetual task.

Proposed 2013 VGP Links Enviro Stewardship to Long-Term Growth

The EPA’s Proposed 2013 Vessel General Permit (VGP) will require vessel owners and operators to adopt environmentally-acceptable lubricants (EALs) into their operations to further reduce their environmental impact starting in December 2013. This regulation brings a two-fold benefit to the industry by boosting the bottom line of both small and large vessel operations, while engendering positive change that ensures the preservation of ecosystems in which these vessels operate. The…
