In the 65 years, since Roy Breaux, Sr. founded Breaux’s Bay Craft and on down through three generations, the yard has built over 1700 hulls. Through the regular expansion and contraction of the oil industry, they learned to pivot from market demand to market demand. As the oil industry in the Gulf of Mexico moved farther offshore, the demand for larger and faster crew boats, was met by Breaux. The fine-hulled aluminum crew boats grew to 125-foot vessels powered by up to five 700 hp Cummins KTA19 engines…

After 60,000 hours of service, crab fisherman Robert Ross decided that his 19-liter Cummins 1150M had earned a rest. The 500 HP engine had been a perfect match for his 72- by 26-foot aluminum boat so he ordered up a new Cummins KTA19-M3 at 500 HP, continuous duty, from his local supplier Cummins Sales and Service in Fredericton, New Brunswick, in eastern Canada. Ross had his well-maintained 39-year-old boat, the Kara-Matt, hauled out at a shipyard and Dugas Equipment Ltd. of Caraquet, New Brunswick took on the repower.

Boatbuilding in China

Xin Yue Feng Shipyard’s Chairman Luo Chaoneng with a pair of AHTs.

While much of the focus on coverage of the Chinese shipbuilding industry is on big shipbuilding, Maritime Reporter switches gears this month to explore activities in select boatbuilding sectors. The Damen boatbuilding name is ubiquitous around the world, and China is certainly no exeception. The Damen Yichang Shipyard in China started ops in 1999 as a JV between Damen Shipyards Group and Sinotrans CSC, focused on building cargo vessels from the Dutch company’s portfolio. Recently Damen said it intends to broaden the market audience courtesy of an increased portfolio of vessels from the yard…

DongGuan Nanxiang Shipbuilding chairman Zhu Fu Lin welcomes guests with fresh-brewed local tea and explains the range of work at the shipyard: from a large fishing boat building for a Hong Kong customer, to a variety of heavy lifting crane-vessels of various sizes for a range of customers. Although not the largest, the 400-ton-capacity 62.2- by 26.2-meter crane barge that the yard had under construction in mid-March was a good representation. A pair of Cummins KT38-M mains, generating 780 KW each, powers the 4.8-meter-deep barge.

Thailand has long been noted for exquisite food and gorgeous boats. In recent years these two have found luxurious expression in the growing fleet of big, low-slung dinner-cruise vessels. In 2005 we reported on a 53x11-meter vessel capable of feeding 400 people at a sit-down buffet. A pair of 640 HP Cummins KTA19 M3 engines powered this vessel. June 2014 will see the game moved up several notches when the dinner cruise vessel Wonderful Pearl makes her grand entry to the Chao Phraya River from her builders, the Mahachai Dockyard on the Ta Chin River just to the west of the Bangkok.

Long Beach Cruises Employs EC Engines

Emission reduction in California, especially at the Long Beach and Los Angeles Ports, remains an ongoing project. However, a number of recent innovations have helped the cause: the employment of shore power for visiting ships, new regulations for container trucks and container handling equipment, and the release of a Cummins-powered hybrid Foss docking tug. In keeping with the agenda, Dan Salas at Long Beach Cruises recently repowered his 2005 Kvichak-built whale watch catamaran named Christopher. Originally powered by a pair of Cummins KTA19-M engines, the boat received a set of new EPA Tier 2 complaint QSK19 engines. While the original engines were mechanically controlled, its replacements are electronically controlled with a modular common rail system.

Make Over for Landing Craft

The iconic 4-wheel-drive World War II Jeep has undergone decades of upgrades to become the modern SUV. Now the craft that landed on the beaches of Normandy and the islands of the Pacific has been similarly upgraded at the South East Asia Shipyard in Vietnam. The most important factor in the design, by France’s Piriou Ingénierie, is the provision for the landing craft to carry up to nine TEU of containers on trailers as well as regular cargos. Side rails will secure the trailers and their containers. Electric connections will be provided for reefer containers.

Coastal Tankers: A Vital Link

The 299 DWT Supreme. Photo Photos courtesy of Ocean Leader Shipyard

In Asian ports like Hong Kong and Singapore it is usual to see a cluster of small coastal tankers anchored off to one side. Unlike the big crude carriers, these little ships carry refined products throughout the area to supply the small ports and harbors. Relatively unheralded they are often launched and go into service without all the fan fare that accompanies their very large cousins. Ocean Leader Shipbuilding Co. Ltd, located in the Pearl River delta of Guangdong Province southern China, specializes in building these coastal tankers.

Cummins in Honk Kong: Keeping Up the Quality

The tanker Tai Hing Hong 2 at anchor just outside Aberdeen Harbour (Haig-Brown photos courtesy of Cummins Marine)

On many older boats from the UK to Canada, and from Thailand to Hong Kong, the deep purr of a well-tuned Gardner diesel wakens fond memories for many mariners. When the British firm discontinued volume production of their standard engines in the early 1990s mariners had to choose another manufacturer to meet their expectations for quality. In Hong Kong this was made easier by the strong presence of Cummins marine diesels since the early 1980s. Otto C. Y. To, Deputy General Manager of Shun Fung Engineering Ltd…
