After 60,000 hours of service, crab fisherman Robert Ross decided that his 19-liter Cummins 1150M had earned a rest. The 500 HP engine had been a perfect match for his 72- by 26-foot aluminum boat so he ordered up a new Cummins KTA19-M3 at 500 HP, continuous duty, from his local supplier Cummins Sales and Service in Fredericton, New Brunswick, in eastern Canada. Ross had his well-maintained 39-year-old boat, the Kara-Matt, hauled out at a shipyard and Dugas Equipment Ltd. of Caraquet, New Brunswick took on the repower.

In keeping with their reputation as a nation that can overcome all obstacles, Vietnam is rebuilding its aging fishing fleet. With a government program of soft loans, designated Decree 67/ND-CP, fishermen are building boats along 28 coastal provinces from the north to the south of Vietnam. Capt. Trinh Van Hung, grew up in a fishing family and, after completing his schooling, he fished briefly with his father. His curiosity took him into business as a trader but the call of the sea was strong. At 25, he returned to the fishing.

In recent decades there have been great advances in design of crewboats and offshore supply vessels to meet the needs of the petroleum industry. Recently a number of nations have turned to these designs as inspiration for naval craft. Now the Government Shipping Services of the Fiji Islands have turned to a designer and a builder of offshore vessels for a new inter-island ferry. The M/V Cavigou was designed by United Ship Design of Sibu and built by Kian Juan Dockyard in Miri, also in Sarawak, Malaysia.

With 4,989 kilometers of Atlantic coastline, Argentina looks to commercial fishing as an important contributor to the Argentinian economy. The promotion of the maritime resources is dependent on quality boats capable of delivering quality product. This spring just such a vessel joined the Argentine trawler fleet. The 20.8 by 6.6-meter FV Don Franco was designed and built by the Contessi Shipyard at Mar del Plata, Argentina’s largest fishing port 400 kilometers south of Buenos Aires. Owned by the Galeano family, the new vessel is classed by RINA and will replace their older boat the Galme I.

DongGuan Nanxiang Shipbuilding chairman Zhu Fu Lin welcomes guests with fresh-brewed local tea and explains the range of work at the shipyard: from a large fishing boat building for a Hong Kong customer, to a variety of heavy lifting crane-vessels of various sizes for a range of customers. Although not the largest, the 400-ton-capacity 62.2- by 26.2-meter crane barge that the yard had under construction in mid-March was a good representation. A pair of Cummins KT38-M mains, generating 780 KW each, powers the 4.8-meter-deep barge.

Thailand has long been noted for exquisite food and gorgeous boats. In recent years these two have found luxurious expression in the growing fleet of big, low-slung dinner-cruise vessels. Fans of the popular Discovery Channel series “The Deadliest Catch” thrill at the sight of the 113-foot, black-hulled Time Bandit’s bow rearing out of a cresting wave. Onboard men launch and recover 1000-pound crab pots while chilled Arctic seas wash over the working deck. In the wheelhouse, the crab boat’s skippers Andy or Jonathan Hillstrand monitor the deck crew and the boat’s electronic navigation equipment.

Navios South American Logistics Inc. is a provider of river transportation on the Inland Water Ways (IWW) of the Paraguay-Paraná Rivers. With a fleet of more than 250 barges and 20 well equipped push-boats on the river, the firm also operates sea-going product tankers. Recently they have repowered the first of their push boats, the 30 by 9.5 by 2.7-meter Tomas Romero Pereira, in Paraguay  at the Shipyard Aguapé of Asunción city. The IWW Paraná-Paraguay is the most important waterway in South America after the Amazon river system.

Emission reduction in California, especially at the Long Beach and Los Angeles Ports, remains an ongoing project. However, a number of recent innovations have helped the cause: the employment of shore power for visiting ships, new regulations for container trucks and container handling equipment, and the release of a Cummins-powered hybrid Foss docking tug. The iconic 4-wheel-drive World War II Jeep has undergone decades of upgrades to become the modern SUV. Now the craft that landed on the beaches of Normandy and the islands of the Pacific has been similarly upgraded at the South East Asia Shipyard in Vietnam. The most important factor in the design, by France’s Piriou Ingénierie, is the provision for the landing craft to carry up to nine TEU of containers on trailers as well as regular cargos. Side rails will secure the trailers and their containers. Electric connections will be provided for reefer containers.

Established in 1997 as the vessel owning and operating branch of the United Arab Emirates-based Stanford Marine Group, Stanford Marine is in the midst of a major fleet expansion. In 2009 the firm acquired five vessels and acquired a company that had ten vessels on order including six new 190-ft off shore supply vessels. This brought the fleet to nearly 40 vessels and expanded the company’s operational area to include Southeast Asia. The six 190-ft off shore supply vessels are being built at China’s Fujian Mawi Shipbuilding Ltd.

Tucked into a sheltered cove on the northwest corner of Batam Island, Nongsa Jay Buana Shipyard is approached via a short causeway and a road built into the reddish earth of Indonesia’s Batam Island. On entering the yard, the car passes an area of land that is dominated by a series of barges under construction and then on past a double row of eight tugs also under construction. In the near future some marine passengers in Greece will be driving their cars aboard a handy size and handy maneuvering double-ender car ferry. The 288.7 by 57.7-ft vessel is undergoing final fitting out at the Sidironaftiki Epe-Atsalakis shipyard in Piraeus. The owners, Agios Athanasios A Shipping had the vessel designed by naval architect Nikos Petichakis. Capacities include 130 cars on the main deck and 36 cars on a lower deck as well as 500 passengers. Tankage for fuel includes 65 tons with a 10-ton day tank in addition to 120 tons of water.

In Asian ports like Hong Kong and Singapore it is usual to see a cluster of small coastal tankers anchored off to one side. Unlike the big crude carriers, these little ships carry refined products throughout the area to supply the small ports and harbors. Relatively unheralded they are often launched and go into service without all the fan fare that accompanies their very large cousins. Ocean Leader Shipbuilding Co. Ltd, located in the Pearl River delta of Guangdong Province southern China, specializes in building these coastal tankers.

On many older boats from the UK to Canada, and from Thailand to Hong Kong, the deep purr of a well-tuned Gardner diesel wakens fond memories for many mariners. When the British firm discontinued volume production of their standard engines in the early 1990s mariners had to choose another manufacturer to meet their expectations for quality. In April Bollinger Shipyard delivered the first of their 234-ft class of Cummins-powered Platform Supply Vessels (PSVs) to Bee Mar Inc. The shipyard started building this series of vessels in 2008 and delivered the first in the series to the newly formed Bee Mar LLC in June of 2009. The Bee Mar newbuild fleet will consist of five 210-ft and three 234-ft American Bureau of Shipping (ABS) classed DP‐2 PSV's. Each vessel has high cargo carrying capacities and meets or exceeds the customer requirements and demands for offshore marine support applications.

Transdorada Transportes LTDA, a towboat operator on Brazil’s Amazon River, has recently taken delivery of a number of Cummins-powered push boats. These include two 64-ft boats with twin Cummins KTA19-M3 engines each delivering 600 HP and a single 64-ft pushboat with a single KTA19-M3 engine. All three vessels were built at Estaleiro Rio Maguari. The boats will operate on the Amazon River between Belem and Manaus with the 1200 hp twin engined boats pushing six to nine barges and the 600 hp single-screw vessel pushing four barges at a time.
