Maersk Ships Rice to Haiti for Free
Maersk Line, part of the Danish group A.P. Moller - Maersk, will provide free ocean freight for 147 containers (3,525 metric tons) of rice donated by the Government of Thailand to Haiti through the World Food Program. The rice will be split and shipped across four sailings, from Laem Chabang, Thailand to Caucedo, Dominican Republic, before being trucked into Haiti. The first shipment set sail on 15 March 2010, on Maersk Line vessel Maersk Kendal, and is expected to arrive six weeks later towards the end of April. Thomas L. News: Port Security Funds Released
Some long awaited funding has finally been released from the Federal Government to shore up port security across the nation. Yester, U.S. Secretary of Homeland Security Tom Ridge, announced new port security initiatives and investments. Funding includes the second phase of the Container Security Initiative (CSI), $170 million in port security grants, and $58 million in funding for Operation Safe Commerce. The American Association of Port Authorities (AAPA) welcomed the DHS announcement naming recipients of $245 million in federal grants for security enhancements at U.S. ports and related maritime facilities. An additional $58 million was also announced for Operation Safe Commerce.
CSI Operational in Genoa
U. S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) Commissioner Robert C. Bonner announced that the Container Security Initiative (CSI) becomes operational today at the port of Genoa, Italy. CBP and the government of Italy signed a declaration of principles on November 7, 2002. As part of the CSI program, CBP has deployed a team of officers to the port of Genoa to work with host government personnel to target high-risk cargo containers destined for the United States. Italian government officials are responsible for screening any container identified jointly with CBP officers as a potential terrorist risk. The port of Genoa is the 14th CSI port to become operational.
