Biofouling in Niche Areas: Addressing the Blind Spots

Rhenus Acquires World Net Logistics

European logistics provider Rhenus Group has acquired South African freight forwarding and logistics specialist World Net Logistics (WNL).The takeover of the Johannesburg-headquartered firm WNL is still subject to approval by the relevant cartel authorities.In addition to having a dense network of business sites in South Africa, WNL also has several branches and partners in Asia and Germany.The acquisition by Germany’s Rhenus Group is the latest in a string of purchases around the world in the last few months alone, including Canada-based Rodair this month, British 3PL provider Core Management Logistics in January, Cesped in Italy last December…

CMA CGM Buys Stake in CSP Zeebrugge Terminal

French container carrier CMA CGM announced Friday it has acquired from CHINA SHIPPING Ports Development Co. First German-Latvian Maritime Forum in Riga

On 19 May, Ziemelblazma Culture Palace in Riga, the Latvian capital was the venue for a meeting between numerous representatives of the Ports of Liepaja, Riga, Ventspils, Lübeck, Kiel and Hamburg. This was hosted by the three Latvian ports and Port of Hamburg Marketing (HHM). For Marina Basso Michael, Head of Market Development for the Baltic Region and Eastern Europe for HHM, and Axel Mattern, CEO of HHM, Riga was an excellent place to hold the first “German-Latvian Maritime Forum”. The two HHM representatives pointed out that current topics and challenges on the overall economic development of the Baltic region closely link all the ports participating in the event.

VIKING Service Network Expands

VIKING continues its march forward in Europe and Asia with four new, well-equipped servicing stations opening in November. Marine and fire safety equipment manufacturer VIKING Life-Saving Equipment has announced it is opening four servicing stations at Brest (France), Split (Croatia), Kaohsiung (Taiwan) and Port Klang (Malaysia). The new ports further expand the company’s already dense network of stations in Europe and Asia. The new facility at Split, on the eastern shores of the Adriatic Sea, is the first VIKING-owned station in Croatia.

MaK Gensets for BC Ferries

Four MaK 8M 32 C generator sets will be onboard each of the new double-ended ferries for BC Ferries. BC Ferries operates a dense network along the Pacific coast of British Columbia with a fleet of 35 vessels. As the start of a newbuilding program, the Flensburger Schiffbau-Gesellschaft (FSG) will, between December 2007 and June 2008, deliver three "Super C-Class" double-ended ferries that measure 160 x 28.2 with a 5.75 m draft, able to carry 370 automobiles, 1650 passengers and 35 crew. The four MaK 8M 32 C generator sets jointly supply the electrical energy for the currently operating unit of the two propulsion motors (each of 11,000 kW), all the auxiliary systems and the comprehensive facilities available on the ships.
