Green Instruments Secures Shipyard Deal for Fire Detection Equipment

Danish company Green Instruments has entered a major agreement with Hudong-Zhonghua Shipbuilding for the delivery of equipment that detects oil mist and vapor on ships and triggers an alarm before fires can develop and endanger the crew, ship, equipment, and environment.The shipyard now installs Green Instruments’ equipment on every new vessel built.Oil mist is formed by oil droplets floating in the air and can ignite at low temperatures. False Alarm, Loss of Propulsion Leads to Cargo Ships Colliding

A loss of propulsion due to a false alarm led to cargo vessels colliding near Port Arthur, Texas last year, the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) said Thursday.While transiting the Sabine Pass on August 21, 2022, the general cargo ship Damgracht lost propulsion when the vessel’s main engine shut down due to “high oil mist density” sensed by its oil mist detector (OMD). Due to the abrupt loss of propulsion, the Damgracht began veering into the path of the bulk carrier AP Revelin.

Valmet, VTT Tests System to Dramatically Cut Ship Exhaust Gas Emissions

Valmet has piloted a first-of-a-kind combination of a scrubber and a wet electrostatic precipitator in a marine diesel engine together with VTT. Valmet reports that it has tested a first-of-a-kind scrubber and wet electrostatic precipitator combination and cut exhaust gas emissions in a marine diesel engine by up to 99%. Catastrophic Engine Damage Led to OSV Fire -NTSB

Catastrophic engine damage led to the fire aboard the U.S. -flagged offshore supply vessel Ocean Intervention near Honolulu, the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) said.No pollution or injuries to the 16 crewmembers were reported in connection with the mechanical failure, which resulted in a fire in the engine room on December 19, 2020. The crew isolated the fire before it could spread throughout the vessel.The Ocean Intervention, a 243-foot-long, steel-hulled vessel, was built in 1998 and operated by Oceaneering International, Inc.

Daspos Opens its Doors in the US

Danish manufacturer of oil mist and gas leakage detection systems Daspos A/S has opened its new Daspos International, Inc. office in the greater Seattle area to service the maritime industry. Daspos manufactures and markets the patented LAS-10 oil mist and gas leakage detection system for surveillance and prevention of on-board fires through early discovery of either oil mist or gasses in primarily the open engine room. According to Daspos, two thirds of all on-board fires start in the engine room.

Great Ships of 2014: Al Kout Environmental, Piracy Protected, Proven

The KOTC operated crude oil tanker Al Kout is the fourth sister Very Large Crude Carrier (VLCC) of 317,300 DWT, part of the KOTC Phase III of the fleet newbuilding projects. The vessel has been designed and built under the survey of NK class and distinguished in the register by the following notations: NS*(CSR, TOB, PSPC-WBT) (PS-FA) (ESP, PSCM, IWS) (EA, BWTS, HMS, BRS1), MSN*, M0, Prime Ship-Hull care. According to the builder and the owner, the tanker Al Kout offers many advantages over traditional tankers in terms of efficiency, environmental friendliness, crew comfort and security.

A Closer Look inside the Alfa Laval Test & Training Center

Just two months remain until the inauguration of the Alfa Laval Test & Training Center on January 15, 2014. Originally conceived for the development of PureSOX and other emission control technologies, it has grown to incorporate far more than just exhaust systems. Now that the majority of the equipment is in place, it is possible to take a deeper look into the details of this remarkable new facility. Located on the site of the former Aalborg Shipyard in Aalborg, Denmark, the new Alfa Laval Test & Training Center is an imposing structure.

CIC on Propulsion & Auxiliary Machinery

A Concentrated Inspection Campaign (CIC) on “Propulsion and Auxiliary Machinery” has been announced by the Paris MoU and Tokyo MoU and will commence on 1st September 2013. The 45 Maritime Authorities of the Paris and the Tokyo Memoranda of Understanding on Port State Control (PSC) will begin a joint concentrated inspection campaign with the purpose to ensure compliance with SOLAS Chapter II-1. The duration of this inspection campaign will be three months, ending on 30th November 2013. Members should note that other PSC MoU’s will also carry out a CIC on the same topic during this period. During this campaign Port State Control Officers (PSCOs) will verify applicable documents and confirm the safety of propulsion and auxiliary machinery…

Alfa Laval Now Offers Sustainable Solutions

Global marine supplier Alfa Laval now offers a set of sustainable solutions designed to help ship owners and operators comply with current and pending environmental regulations. Grouped under the conceptual name “Pure thinking”, the products will provide security as existing legislation is tightened, as well as compliance with new laws such as those that will regulate ballast water treatment. MAN B&W Turbocharger Technology Unveiled

This past May marked the unveiling of an ocean-going product deep in the heart of Bavaria, specifically at the lake at Ammersee near Munich, where MAN B&W presented its newest engine series – the TCA (Turbocharger Axial). Encompassing two years of research and development, the first production turbocharger, the TCA77, has entered into service with an MAN B&W 7S50MC-C two-stroke diesel engine. With the TCA77 being first production turbocharger form this series, the new turbocharger development combines a radial-flow compressor wheel with axial-flow turbine blading. In addition, frame sizes ranging from the TCA33 – all the way up to the TCA99 – are currently in development.
