MSC to Resume Cruise Activities in Valencia with Arrival of 'MSC Grandiosa'

The MSC Grandiosa cruise ship is set to dock at the cruise pier of the Port of Valencia marking the MSC's resumption of activity at the port. The ship will dock at the Cap i Casal, an operation that will take place every Friday with a full day stopover until November 5, when the summer and autumn season comes to an end. Baleària Ups LNG Bunkering in Valencia Port

Spanish shipping company and ferry operator Baleària has established a natural gas supply in the port of Valencia using a so-called multi truck to ship (MTTS) bunkering system in which several tanks operate simultaneously to supply fuel to the ship.Baleària will use this new system daily, after the approval of Autoridad Portuaria de Valencia (APV – Valenciaport, Port Authority of Valencia), which guarantees the complete operation of ships operating with natural gas in that port.The MTTS system allows simultaneous supply of several tank vehicles abd Baleària utilises a collector manufactured by Kosan Crinsplant, which has been optimized by the Valencian engineering Cotenaval…

CMA CGM Upgrades NEMO service

Shipping group CMA CGM has reinforced its Europe / Indian Ocean & Australia offering by upgrading its NEMO service, which liaises North Europe and the Mediterranean to the Indian Ocean Islands and Australia on the southbound leg and Australia to southeast Asia and Europe on the northbound leg.This upgraded service will be effective in September 2019 and operated in partnership with MSC, subject to applicable filing requirements.CMA CGM said the new offer will feature an upgraded fleet and provide expanded port coverage through a better utilization of hubs offering dedicated feeder services.

Port of Valencia Pilots IoT with MSC and Traxens

French start-up Traxens and  MSC Mediterranean Shipping Company is cooperating with its partner in a pilot project in Valencia to use an Internet-of-Things (IoT) network to improve the operational efficiency of the port.MSC is already working with Traxens, which provides data and services for the supply chain industry, on smart container solutions using IoT for customers around the world. The use of such real-time tracking technologies brings unprecedented visibility of cargo flow from door-to-door, adding efficiency, safety and predictability where historically chasing information has been time-consuming and expensive.The pilot project at MSC Terminal Valencia is being conducted in cooperation with the Port Authority at the Port of Valencia and Fundacion Valenciaport (FVP).

MSC Adds New Rail Service in Spain

MSC Mediterranean Shipping Company is launching a new rail service to bring agricultural cargoes from Spain closer to the international markets.The transportation and logistics company said that the new service runs will improve links between Seville and Cordoba (Spain) and destinations in the Mediterranean, the Middle East and the Far East, beginning in October 2018. It is expected to run at least twice a week from both Seville’s inland maritime port – Puerto de Sevilla – and Cordoba’s cargo rail terminal and the port of Valencia, a major hub port in the Mediterranean.MSC’s new rail service will provide better connectivity and improved transit times for exporters in various southern regions of Spain…

Spain Offers to Take in Drifting Migrant Ship Aquarius

Spain offered on Monday to take in a rescue ship that is drifting in the Mediterranean sea with 629 migrants stranded on board after Italy and Malta refused to let it dock.The Aquarius picked up the migrants from inflatable boats and rafts off the coast of Libya at the weekend, and the United Nations refugee agency said on Monday it was running out of provisions.Spain's Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez, who took office just over a week ago, has given instructions for the boat to be admitted to the eastern port of Valencia, his office said in a statement."It is our duty to help avoid a humanitarian catastrophe and offer a safe port to these people…

Rapid Growth for Zaragoza Maritime Terminal

In 2017, the Terminal Marítima de Zaragoza (tmZ) increased its handled volume by 20 percent, to around 350,000 TEUs by rail and truck. Over the past five years, the terminal has seen volumes increase by more than 250%. Miguel Duro, Managing Director of the company, points to   the depot’s, “flexible service offering”. Following the addition of a railway siding in 2007 a private company was established  ̶  tmZ Depot Services  ̶  to operate the  terminal under a 35-year concession. APM Terminals Spain is a co-founder and holds a 45% stake in the company. The depot is a multimodal inland terminal exclusively focused on the maritime container trade.

Spanish Dock Strike Could Disrupt Key Export Chains

Key export chains in Spain could face major disruption if a long-running dispute between the government and the country's dock workers extends beyond a planned three-day strike next week, industry sources warned on Thursday. The standstill will take place every other hour on Feb. 20, 22 and 24 at dozens of Spanish ports which employ more than 6,000 stevedores and handle an estimated 500 million tonnes of merchandise a year. "The strike action could cause a lot of problems, not only for the ports but also for the companies," said an administrative source at the busy Mediterranean port of Valencia, who spoke on condition of anonymity. Spain's export sector is worth more than 330 billion euros ($352 billion) a year, or about a third of economic output.

Valencia to Upgrade Three Ports

Spain’s Port Authority of Valencia (APV) has unveiled plans upgrade three of its ports by 2020. The Business Plan approved at the last Board of Directors of the Port Authority of Valencia includes investments in its three ports 56.19 million euros during the year 2017 and plans to invest more than 177 million euros for the period 2018 2020. By enclosures, the Port Authority of Valencia will invest 35.44 million euros in the port of Valencia in 2017. Of these, a 25.55 million euro item stands out for the generation and conditioning of new berths and surfaces. Specifically, it is planned to invest 18.5 million euros for the dredging of the Prince Felipe and Levante docks and the improvement of the drainage of the Príncipe Felipe, Levante and transverse wharves of Costa.

Spain: 156 Passengers on Burning Ferry Evacuate

Spain's development ministry has said that a fire broke out on a ferry as it journeyed from Palma on the island of Majorca to Valencia in Spain. Spanish media reported that around 156 people had to abandon ship around 17 miles from Palma de Mallorca and were helped by emergency services. The Spanish Ministry of Works said the captain did not initially want to evacuate the ferry but passengers and crew eventually left the burning boat in lifeboats. Passenger Ferry Ablaze in the Mediterranean

Spanish emergency services safely evacuated around 150 people from a burning ferry crossing the Mediterranean from the island of Mallorca to the Spanish port of Valencia, government and port authorities said on Tuesday. The Sorrento ferry, belonging to the Italian company Atlantica di Navigazione although operated by Trasmediterranea-Acciona, sent out distress signals, the Ministry of Public Works said in a statement. Spanish newspaper websites showed pictures of the ferry belching out great clouds of black smoke. Although the captain did not initially want to evacuate the ferry, passengers and crew eventually left the burning vessel in lifeboats, the ministry said. The port authority said 170 passengers were rescued. Sea rescue services could not confirm the number.

Vessel Aground Blocks Traffic to Port of Antwerp

Traffic for large ships heading towards the Belgian port of Antwerp was temporarily blocked on Friday after a giant container ship ran aground outside the Dutch port of Terneuzen downstream from the Belgian harbour, emergency services said. Emergeny services for the Dutch province Zeeland said on their website the MSC Rachelle had run on to a sandbank on its way to Antwerp, though they later said it had been refloated. High tide was due at 1700 GMT and six tugs had been involved in the effort to refloat the vessel…

Port Crane Fully Lit by LED Floodlights Begins Work at the Port of Valencia

TCV Stevedoring Gets New RTG

TCV Stevedoring Company, a stevedoring company in the Port of Valencia belonging to Grup TCB, last week took delivery of the components of its four new Konecranes RTG cranes. The new machinery, part of an ambitious investment program  at the terminal, will be erected on the Muelle de Levante dock in the coming months. The components of the four RTG cranes arrived in Valencia on Thursday on board the Medazov Julia, consigned by A. Perez y Cia., and the project's 116 pieces, with a total weight of 368 tonnes, were unloaded on Friday.

Study to Evaluate New Fuels

The European Union will support with almost €2 million from the TEN-T Program a study looking at the potential beneficial effects of using alternative fuels for port operations. The study, which will include pilots in Spain, Slovenia and Italy, will especially look at the ways to improve environmental performance of the participating ports’ container terminals. The project, which was selected for funding under the 2011 TEN-T Annual Call, will study and test new technologies and alternative fuels in the ports of Valencia (Spain), Koper (Slovenia) and Livorno (Italy) to try and reduce the greenhouse gas emissions from these ports container terminal operations. The project will be managed by the Trans-European Transport Network Executive Agency and is set to be completed by May 2014.

Flagship-RTS Reduces Port Emissions, Congestion

Flagship, a part EU-funded maritime transport project, has successfully implemented the first real-time optimization system targeting congestion in container terminals. The system, known as Flagship-RTS was trialed at the Port of Valencia and plans transport resources, container repositioning movements and inventory levels simultaneously, using a real time scheduling model. TCV Adds Another Crane in Valencia

TCV Stevedoring Company, a Grup TCB company managing the transport of goods at the Levante and Llovera docks in the Port of Valencia, has received its fourth Super Post Panamax crane for operating large vessels up to 22 containers wide. Developed by Shanghai Zhenhua Port Machinery (ZMPC), the acquired gantry crane weighs 1,600 tons, is capable of lifting 65 tons and is 44 meters high under the spreader. Its speed is 180 meters per minute hoisting empty containers and 90 meters per minute in the case of fully loaded containers.
