Worth over $46.3m, the contract centering on the 48/60CR was signed by Jari Kujala, Purchasing Manager, Aker Yards Oy, Rauma, Finland and Prof. Dr. Wolfram Lausch, Senior Vice President at the MAN Diesel Marine Medium Speed Business Unit. The contract covers the main propulsion and onboard power supply equipment for two large ROPAX ferries being built by Aker Yards for P&O. On the engine side, for each ship MAN Diesel will supply four inline seven cylinder type 7L48/60CR main engines, each rated 7,600 kW at 500 rpm and four gen-sets based on inline seven cylinder type 7L 21/31 engines, each rated 1463 kWe at 1000 rpm.
CIMAC Panel Held At ASME
A CIMAC Panel discussion was conducted at the ASME Turbo Expo Land, Sea & Air 2000 in Munich on May 10. Titled, "Diesel Engines vs. Gas Turbine Engines up to 300 MW," the topic was discussed by a panel of four chaired by Mark McNeely, Diesel & Gas Turbine Publications. Opened by a short welcome address by the president of the CIMAC German National Member Association (DNCK), Dr. Hanns-Gunther Bozung, MAN B&W, the panel also consisted of Daniel Paro, Wartsila; Klaus Deleroi, MTU Friedrichshafen; Axel Mattschas, Ulstein Turbine; and Wolfram Lausch, MAN B&W.
MAN Diesel Engines to Power Mega Vessel
The Offshore Division of MAN Diesel, based in Frederikshavn, Denmark, has extended its phase of growth. The new order calls for the supply of generator sets with a combined output of almost 95 MW for what will be, dimensionally, the largest vessel in existence and will include working functions which also set world records in their specialist field. Moreover, the contract will also involve the first vee-configuration engines to be produced in MAN Diesel’s new four-stroke medium-speed engine series, the 560 kW per cylinder 32/44 CR with common-rail fuel-injection technology. This new mega-vessel has been ordered by the Swiss-based Allseas Group S.A., an offshore installation contractor, and is a twin-hull construction with main dimensions 1,181 ft. long by 383 ft. wide.

RK 280 to be Launched as MAN 28/33D
The RK 280, previously developed and sold through the U.K. branch of MAN B&W Diesel, will be transferred to the headquarters in Augsburg and newly launched as an MAN 28/33D engine. The commercial responsibility will shift from the U.K. to the Medium Speed Marine division, headed by Prof. Dr. Wolfram Lausch as of July 1. The engine will be fully implemented into the medium-speed production and quality control systems. All technical and support functions will be managed out of the headquarters in Augsburg. The 28/33D engine is sold in a 12V, 16V and 20V configuration. It runs on MDO and is rated 450 kW per cylinder. The first engines have been put into service during this year. Initial applications are main propulsion for fast ships.
Interest in New TCA Turbocharger Generation
Dr. Wolfram Lausch, Director of MAN B&W Diesel’s Marine-Division summed up the positive results from this year’s trade fair in Hamburg: “The SMM fully came up to our expectations. Despite tight economic conditions, we were able to reach our goal, i.e. to be “prime movers” in the market.” MAN B&W used the 5-days trade fair both as a show window for their present new developments and for establishing contacts with customers from all over the world.
