North P&I Club Strengthens Greek Presence

Global marine insurer North P&I Club said that Gagan Dhillon will take over Michael Asherson’s responsibilities for the Greek Membership and lead the claims team based in Newcastle.Gagan, a Master Mariner, first sailed in command of a tanker in 2007 before joining North in 2010 and gaining a First Class (Honours) degree in law.Michael Asherson will take up a position as partner with leading South African law firm Shepstone and Wylie in Durban and will leave the Club at the end of August.After 18 years with the Club, Michael a qualified South African attorney and registered solicitor in England and Wales, leaves with our best wishes for his relocation home to Durban and future legal career.Paul Jennings…

Kvaerner Appoints Allen Executive VP

Kvaerner appointed Tony Allen as Executive Vice President for its International business area. Allen has more than 30 years of industry experience and has been part of the corporate management with several of the leading EPC contractors for the oil and gas industry, including SNC-Lavalin Inc., Humphries & Glasgow and Earl and Wright. He also worked as a Project Manager and Technical Director for Kvaerner in the 1990s. "We are pleased that we now have in place a manager with extensive experience within this area, and who will be able to further develop our international operations in line with our ambitions", says Jan Arve Haugan, President & CEO for Kvaerner. Mr. Allen is a British citizen, with hands-on experience from work in several different countries.

North P&I Club Promotes 19 Employees

North P&I Club recently executed a round of staff promotions across it various operating departments that take effect tomorrow. Joint managing director Paul Jennings says, "We congratulate all 19 staff members on their excellent and well-deserved achievements. The most prestigious promotion is for Alan Lo, who becomes a director of club’s wholly owned management company, North Insurance Management Limited (NIML). Lo has managed North’s Hong Kong office since 1997 and became general manager Asia-Pacific when the club’s Singapore office opened in 2007.

Management Changes at North of England P&I Club’s Greek Office

Tony Allen has taken over the management of the North of England P&I club's successful Greek office. He replaces Mike Salthouse, who set up the office three years ago and has now returned to the club's headquarters in Newcastle upon Tyne, England as a Greek area director. Allen (42) started work in the Greek office last year. He formerly worked in Piraeus on P&I and FD&D matters with international maritime law firm Norton Rose before moving to the North of England in 1998, becoming involved with a wide range of P&I issues including container operations, cargo claims and oil pollution matters. He originally trained in the insurance and marine law litigation department of London law firm Simmons and Simmons.

North of England’s Greek Members Continue to Focus on Loss-Prevention

Around 80 Greek members of North of England P&I Association attended the A rated 65 million GT club's annual seminar at the Piraeus Marine Club last week. The seminar is part of North of England's continuous program of providing advice and support to its Greek membership on loss prevention and associated practical and commercial considerations. In-house freight demurrage and defence lawyers Helen Yiacoumis and Antigone Yanniotis, both of whom are based in the club's Piraeus office, covered the various issues associated with charterparty withdrawal and checking before fixing. North of England P&I Club Announces New Appointments

The 39 million GT North of England P&I club is boosting its successful Greek office with two new appointments. Tony Allen and Helen Yiacoumis, both maritime lawyers with previous experience of working in Piraeus, are joining the office set up two years ago by Mike Salthouse and John Owen to serve the club’s substantial Greek membership. Allen and his Greek-speaking wife, Gordana, returned to Greece this month after four years in England. He formerly worked in Piraeus on P&I and FD&D matters with international maritime law firm Norton Rose before moving to the North of England’s head office in Newcastle-upon-Tyne in 1998, becoming involved with a wide range of P&I issues including container operations, cargo claims and oil pollution matters.
