US Department of Energy Releases Offshore Wind Strategy

The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) has released its Offshore Wind Energy Strategy, a first of its kind, comprehensive summary of the Department’s efforts to meet President Biden’s goal to deploy 30GW of offshore wind energy by 2030.The strategy aims to set the nation on a pathway to 110GW or more by 2050.Deploying 30GW of offshore wind would provide enough power for 10 million homes, support 77,000 jobs, and spur $12 billion per year in direct private investment, says the DOE.The…

Sen. Schumer Calls for Offshore Wind Turbine Assembly Site to be Built in Brooklyn

Huisman to Deliver Giant Skyhook Crane to Norway

Dutch crane specialist Huisman has signed a letter of intent with Norway-based Wergeland and PSW for the delivery of its Skyhook quayside crane at the Gulen Industrial Harbour, Norway.The crane - dubbed the largest Slewing Jib Quayside Crane in the world - will be deployed at the Gulen Industrial Harbour, the base of Wergeland and near PSW Group in Mongstad, providing the additional potential for both decommissioning works as well as for outfitting the next generation deepwater semi-submersibles in the port’s 100 meters wide dock.

The final sections of the second Queen Elizabeth Class aircraft carrier produced by Cammell Laird arrived at Babcock Rosyth Facilities in Fife on Thursday, September 3, following their voyage from Birkenhead. Center Block 4 is the longest of the upper sections of hull of HMS Prince of Wales, the second of two new aircraft carriers being constructed by the Aircraft Carrier Alliance. Comprised in two parts (rings C and D), it contains a mixture of aviation workshops, mission system compartments and training rooms.

A Nigerian customer added its ninth Damen dredger to its fleet. The Cutter Suction Dredger type CSD500 was chosen due to the availability of Damen Field Services in Nigeria, the builder said, adding that the local presence was even more practical in view of the challenging assembly conditions. For Damen’s Service Hub Nigeria this job is one of the first successes. Damen Shipyards Group usually has a spares-stock available in Nigeria for standard dredgers such as the CSD500. In addition, Damen field service engineers are continuously available locally.

New Foss Ferry Begins Work on the Columbia River

A new ferry, the product of a unique partnership between Foss Maritime, a confederation of Native American tribes and state government, began service on the Columbia River after a christening ceremony on August 14, 2013. The new Sanpoil ferry, a 20-car aluminum-hulled vessel with advanced technology for cleaner air, was constructed at Foss Maritime's Rainier, Ore. shipyard in 11 aluminum sections. The new vessel is the largest ever built at the Rainier Yard and measures 116 feet long, 45 feet in beam and has a draft of 6.5 feet.

UK Aircraft Carrier's Second Island Module Placed

The aft island of the double island 'HMS Queen Elizabeth' has been lowered into place by Aircraft Carrier Alliance workers at Rosyth Dockyard in Fife. After an air horn sounded, a huge Goliath crane was used to lower the 750-tonne section of the aircraft carrier, known as Upper Block 14, into place. HMS Queen Elizabeth and HMS Prince of Wales promise to be the biggest and most powerful surface warships ever constructed for the Royal Navy. British Secretary of State for Defense, Philip Hammond, signaled a key moment in the creation of aircraft carrier HMS Queen Elizabeth during his visit to the assembly site, Babcock’s Rosyth Dockyard. Huge Section of HMS Queen Elizabeth Arrives at Rosyth

The Final hull section of aircraft carrier HMS Queen Elizabeth has arrived at Babcock’s Rosyth dockyard. The 11,300 tonne aft section of hull, known as Lower Block 04 (LB04), made its way under the Forth Bridges shortly before 11am on Remembrance Sunday. It left BAE Systems’ yard on the Clyde last Sunday (November 4). The section has travelled all the way around the south coast to reach the Fife assembly site, a journey of more than 1,200 miles. The block is the largest section of HMS Queen Elizabeth, the first of two new aircraft carriers being constructed by the Aircraft Carrier Alliance.

Foss, State, Tribes to Build Columbia River Ferry

Partnership to create jobs; bring modern vessel to vital transportation link. Foss Maritime Company is joining with Washington state and the Confederated Tribes of the Colville Reservation to build a state-of-the-art replacement for an aging 63-year-old ferry that's been a vital cross-Columbia River transportation link. The unique partnership between Foss and the Washington State Department of Transportation includes the Confederated Tribes whose members will participate in the vessel's final assembly work. Faber added that Foss is looking forward to working with the Confederated Tribes.

Scheduled for a September 2003 release, the next major revision of the 3-D product modeling software for shipbuilding and offshore platforms from Albacore Research Ltd., ShipConstructor2004, will include a full Heating, Ventilation and Air-Conditioning module (HVAC). HVAC is a fully integrated member of the ShipConstructor suite of Structure, Automatic and Manual Nest, NC Code generation, Outfit, Pipe, Fairing, and Lofting tools. To facilitate automatic report generation, HVAC makes full use of ShipConstructor's SQL Server product database. As with all ShipConstructor modules, HVAC is a full 3-D modeling package; this reduces drafting errors and time-to-production. With ShipConstructor, HVAC ducts are full-featured AutoCAD entities.

Manitowoc Crane Group to Develop Manufacturing Facility in Slovakia

The Manitowoc Company, Inc. has reached an agreement with Valcovna profilov a.s. for the development of a crane manufacturing facility in Saris, Slovakia. The facility, which will be refurbished and re-equipped, will serve as the final manufacturing and assembly site for Grove, Potain, and Manitowoc cranes being delivered to customers in East European markets, particularly in Russia and the CIS. The company expects to begin production from the Saris facility in late 2007. Financial terms of the transaction were not disclosed, but Manitowoc is revising its 2007 capital expenditures guidance from $70 million to $85 million for the full year as a result of this acquisition and other capacity initiatives in its Crane Group.
