Electrical systems integrator Alewijnse has delivered its newest dredge control solutions to Great Lakes Dredge & Dock Co, the largest provider of dredging services in the U.S.The systems were installed on board the Liberty Island, a large trailing suction hopper dredger, which was deployed immediately after completion for a beach replenishment project in Buxton, N.C."Our proven systems for suction tube monitoring and hopper loading deliver maximum added value to our customers," said Johan van Rikxoort, solutions manager at Alewijnse.

Great Lakes Dredge & Dock Corporation reported a first-quarter net income of 11.1 million in the first quarter of 2022 an increase compared to first-quarter 2021 income of $8.8 million.Revenue for the quarter was $194.3 million, an increase of $16.7 million from the first quarter of 2021. The higher revenue in the first quarter of 2022 was due to higher domestic capital and coastal protection revenue, offset partially by a decrease in revenue from maintenance dredging, rivers and lakes…

Ships, barges, ferries, and recreational boats in the busy New York Harbor will be able to navigate more safely thanks to an updated version of the harbor’s nautical chart recently issued by NOAA that includes data gathered in the navigational response to the damage caused by Sandy in October 2012. The latest edition of Chart 12334 – New York Harbor includes new depth measurements and shoreline depictions. “This new chart edition is the first product of a multi-year post-Sandy charting plan,” said Rear Admiral Gerd Glang, director of NOAA’s Office of Coast Survey.

The U.S. Coast Guard responded yesterday to a report of a ferry vessel aground near Liberty Island. The Golden Sunshine, a 90-foot tourist transport based in New Jersey, ran aground on rocks on the northern side of Liberty Island while enroute to Manhattan at approximately 11:15 a.m. Coast Guard Sector New York received notification at 11:30. The vessel was towed into deeper water by a U.S. Park Police vessel. A New York Fire Department vessel was also on scene to assist in the tow. The Coast Guard Cutter Line was diverted from a routine patrol to escort the Golden Sunshine to its berth at the Liberty Landing Marina in the Morris Canal, N.J.

The horrific attacks on 9-11, and the subsequent increase in maritime security required to protect against asymmetric maritime attacks, has dramatically changed the U. S. Coast Guard. They have changed the service's emphasis on port security as well as its ethos in the eyes of the nation it serves. Previously, the Coast Guard received national media attention mostly when it was involved in a dramatic at-sea rescue leaving a public perception of the service as lifesavers. Since 9-11, because of its port security efforts and its overall role in Homeland Security, the Coast Guard has received more national level public, political and media attention than at any other time in its long history and its public image is rapidly shifting from lifesaver to protector. A clear, sunny Saturday afternoon of November 10, set the stage for the arrival of the first passenger ship into New York Harbor following the September 11 terrorist attacks. The vessel, Royal Caribbean's Adventure of the Seas, sailed into New York for a two-day tribute cruise for the families of the fallen firemen and police officers who were victim to the devastation at the World Trade Center. Royal Caribbean also plans to donate $50,000 to the Twin Towers Relief Fund. The 142,000-ton Adventure of the Seas - sister ship to Voyager and Explorer of the Seas - was christened at Pier 88 and named by representatives of the New York Police Department and New York Fire Department.

Halter Marine has answered the call from the Venezuelan Navy for a variety of patrol boats. The company recently delivered four 80 ft. (24.3 m) boats to the country's government, which completes the contract for the design and construction of 12 total vessels in this size range. Designed for high speed operations in coastal and riverine environments, the vessels will be used for a variety of patrolling efforts in Venezuelan territorial waters, specifically to counter illegal drug traffic, provide search and rescue assistance, and disaster relief. Powered by a pair of Detroit Diesel marine engines, the vessels will have a range of 1,000 nm and a maximum speed of 25 knots. Halter also supplied the last two 54 ft. patrol boats for the Venezuelan National Guard.

The Manitowoc Company, Inc. reported its financial results for the fourth quarter and year ended December 31, 2000. Net sales for 2000 grew 5.9 percent to $873.3 million from $824.3 million in 1999. Net earnings for 2000 were $60.3 million compared with $66.8 million in 1999. Manitowoc also generated $34.4 million of EVA during 2000, its second highest level of economic value, eclipsed only by the $43.2 million level attained in 1999. For the fourth quarter of 2000, net sales increased more than 13 percent to $209.3 million from $184.8 million for the same period in 1999. Net earnings for the fourth quarter of 2000 were $10.5 million compared with $14 million for the fourth quarter of 1999.

Great Lakes Dredge and Dock Company announced it has commissioned Bay Shipbuilding of Sturgeon Bay, Wis. to construct a new trailing suction hopper dredge, to be called Liberty Island. The new dredge will have a capacity of 5,000 cubic meters and is part of a continuing investment program the company has undertaken to ensure the quality and longevity of its dredging fleet. The vessel is to be built by Bay Shipbuilding, a division of Manitowoc Marine Group, Inc., of Milwaukee. Construction is being financed by MDFC Equipment Leasing Corp. Liberty Island will bring to 45 the number of hulls Bay Shipbuilding has manufactured for the 110-year-old dredging contractor. Steel cutting for the first module is scheduled for February 15, 2000 and delivery is scheduled for fall of 2001.
