Jaxport, the port of Jacksonville, Florida, had its best ever January container volumes, with total container movements increasing 16 percent over the same period last year.Nearly 121,400 twenty-foot equivalent units (or TEUs, the industry standard for measuring containers) moved through JAXPORT in January 2019.The port’s Asian container volumes continue to show significant growth, up 17 percent year–to–date with nearly 164,000 TEUs moved so far in Fiscal Year 2019. JAXPORT’s fiscal year runs Oct. 1- Sept. 30. JAXPORT’s Asian trade has grown an average of 14 percent annually over the past five years.January was also a record month for the port’s auto business. Nearly 61,500 autos moved through JAXPORT in January 2019, a double-digit increase over the previous January.

At its 91st annual convention last month, the International Propeller Club of the United States elected and installed its leaders for the coming year and beyond. Representatives of the Club’s more than 75 chapters from around the world elected Rear Admiral Joel Whitehead, US Coast Guard (retired) to a two-year term as International President. RADM Whitehead is a member of the Club’s Port of New Orleans chapter. Niels Aalund, a member of the Club’s Port of Houston and the Senior Vice President, Maritime Affairs, of the West Gulf Maritime Association, was elected First Vice President and Philippe de Gauw (Algeciras, Spain) was reelected as Second Vice President. Both will serve terms expiring in 2019.

U.S. Senator David Vitter (R-LA) and Mexico’s general coordinator of ports and merchant marine, Guillermo Ruiz de Teresa, have been jointly selected to receive the American Association of Port Authorities’ (AAPA) 2015 “Port Person of the Year” award. Captain Richard Goben, Port Captain of Hornblower Cruises & Events in San Diego, received an international maritime award at the 87th Annual Convention and Maritime Industry Conference in Arlington, Virginia in October. International Propeller Club of the United States honored Captain Goben as the 2013 Maritime Person of the Year. The Propeller Club was formed in 1927 in order to support shipping and the maritime industry. Captain Goben is a licensed ship Master and has worked in the San Diego cruise industry as the Port Captain for Hornblower Cruises and Events for over 25 years…

Licensed Professional Engineer and Naval Architect Andrew Mund has been named AdvanTec Marine's Technical Director.In this role Mr. Mund will extend his commitment to the industry by expanding his offerings to a wider client base, leading marine engineering and design initiatives for all five of the companies that make up the AdvanTec Marine family:  Diamond Sea Glaze; Freeman Marine; Manly Marine; Pacific Coast Marine and Steelhead Marine. Mr. Mund's early career days were spent as a naval architect.

NAMEPA’s May 21st Event features Shipboard Safety, Piracy and  Seafarer Issues. Just months after the Costa Concordia accident, and amid daily reports of piracy and needless accidents at sea, the North American Marine Environment Protection Association (NAMEPA) will be offering a seminar “Environmental Intelligence in Maritime:  Safety at Sea, featuring shipboard safety, piracy, and an update on issues for seafarers. The seminar will take place on May 21st at the National Press Club in Washington DC commencing at 3:00pm.

The International Propeller Club of the United States named James L. Henry the Maritime Person of the Year at its international convention last week in Tampa, Fla. Henry is Chairman and President of the Transportation Institute, a leading maritime industry association. Henry is also a founding Board Member of the Maritime Cabotage Task Force, the largest coalition ever to promote America’s Jones Act fleet. The award, which the Club awards annually, recognizes the awardee’s contributions to the commercial maritime industry in the United States and internationally.

VT Halter Marine Inc., a company of VT Systems Inc (VT Systems), announced the appointment of William (Bill) E. Skinner as Chief Executive Officer (CEO) and Paul J. Albert as Chief Operating Officer (COO). Skinner, who has been with the company since inception, was appointed CEO on 21 April, 2009. Prior to this appointment Skinner was VT Halter Marine’s COO (2005- 2009) and Senior Vice President of Vessel Operations (2002-2005). Capt. Paul Leyda and crewmembers of the California Maritime Academy’s Training Ship Golden Bear (TSGB) have been honored with the 2008 Mary Patten Valiant Ship Award and Commendation for Bravery and Outstanding Seamanship. The honor, given by the Women’s Propeller Club of the United States, was awarded in recognition of the actions of the Captain and crew in an August 2008 rescue of two fishermen adrift in a small power boat some 80 miles off the coast of Monterey, Ca. When the single engine on the boat failed, the men managed to radio the Coast Guard.

With homeland security becoming more critical in recent months, the 24th annual International WorkBoat Show, to be held November 28-30 at the Ernest N. Morial Convention Center in New Orleans, will host a special security panel entitled "The Changed Waterfront of Maritime Port Security," as part of the event's comprehensive conference program. The panel, to be held on Thursday, November 29, at 2 p.m., will feature experts from the U.S. Coast Guard, Port of New Orleans, as well as fire and safety personnel addressing critical issues of port security. “Old sailors never die, they just drop the anchor,” Robert J. “Bobby” Pfeiffer said over a decade ago as he was contemplating retirement. Pfeiffer, one of Hawaii’s most renowned sailors and captains of industry, dropped the anchor on Friday, September 26, 2003, at age 83, at his home in Orinda, Calif., after a lengthy illness. During his 12 1/2 years at the helm of Alexander & Baldwin, Inc., Pfeiffer became practically synonymous with business leadership in Hawaii. He charted a course of modernization and diversification, and led A&B through one of its strongest periods of growth and prosperity. At the same time he earned a reputation for leadership –– personal as well as corporate –– in support of charitable and other community causes.

Like so many areas of our economy since the terrorist attacks of September 11, the port and maritime areas of the United States are being scrutinized for vulnerability to terrorism. Catastrophic scenarios are all too easy to imagine, and the threats can come from so many directions. To illustrate the complexity of the maritime law enforcement challenge, the Coast Guard Commandant, Admiral James M. "Imagine for a moment the information requirements associated with a hypothetical 6,000 TEU flag-of-convenience container ship with a multi-national crew cobbled together by a hiring agent who works for an Algerian vessel operator who chartered the vessel from a Greek ship owner whose corporate offices are in the Cayman Islands.

Crowley Maritime Corporation announced today that Mark Miller has been promoted to director of corporate communications with responsibility for internal communications, media relations, advertising and marketing communications for the corporation and its subsidiaries and business units operating around the world. Miller joined Crowley in April 1995 as manager of public relations and advertising for the corporation’s Jacksonville-based container shipping subsidiary, Crowley Liner Services. In April 2000, he was promoted to manager of corporate communications with similar job responsibilities but supporting all of Crowley’s business units. As director, miller will remain in Jacksonville and continue to report to Susan Rodgers, Crowley’s vice president of human resources.

Captain John C. Timmel, president and executive director of the American Victory Mariners Memorial & Museum Ship and harbor pilot with the Tampa Bay Pilots Association, has been named "International Maritime Person of the Year" by the Propeller Club of the United States. "It is an honor to receive such a prestigious award from my peers that acknowledges not only my efforts, but also the efforts of many," said Timmel. Timmel spent many years leading the development efforts in Tampa’s maritime technology. Advisory Council, Timmel helped create the carry-on portable pilot, a computerized, real-time, vessel tracking device, which several other international ports now use. This device allows mariners to track other vessels in the waterways, helping prevent shipping collisions.
